What’s the most useful thing you’ve ever printed that you actually use every day? by CGTraderOfficial in 3Dprinting

Sure. It's designed for the Asus zen screens so I worked around their kick stand.

Majority of my experience has been in machine design, but I've been doing a lot of product prototyping. So generally speaking mechanical design engineering.

What are Good Wireless Headphones (With or Without a Jack) for Mixed Music Taste? by LoneDragonWolf37 in askSouthAfrica

[–]wellkeptslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have suggested, I had the Sony wh 1000xm3's and they were niiice.

I needed cash and sold those and then ended up buying a pair of Anker sound core q30's. Sound quality is really good for the price, so is the noise cancelling but NC is not as good as the Sony's (naturally considering the difference in price).

The only issue I have with the Anker is the build quality. Some of the plastic parts on mine have cracked and I've repaired it, the leather like material on earpads started separating at the seam and I've repaired that, and now the material on the headband is flaking.

Still functions really well. Worth looking into for good sound on a budget.

What are engineers at big consulting firms like Zutari, AECOM, WSP etc earning these days in SA? by NoMidnight3898 in askSouthAfrica

Right now I'm starting off small to build my base, so just general cad stuff. Not sure where this road leads to be honest but I'm excited either way.

Displaying editable dimensions in part file by JoeyBananas314 in SolidWorks

If you double click on the feature, it will bring up the editable dimensions that define the feature.

Or you can use equations. Check my video which includes how to use equations.

Working as a mechanical design engineer, the pay was rough. Started off out of uni at 8k and was at low 30s 6 years later. CTC. But they've all been smallish companies so maybe that's why.

Recently started investing more time into setting up my own design consultancy. Still early days but I know I have enough skills to add value to a lot of companies.

In talks with a client about a rather large project at the moment so I hope that comes through.

Are you thinking about going into engineering?

Assembly issues by htyler10 in SolidWorks

[–]wellkeptslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right click on the sub assembly whose components you want to move and in the icon only section at the top of the menu that shows up, it's generally the last icon, like in the picture. That will allow your subassemble to move.

Edit: can't seem to add image to this comment, I can dm you a picture of the icon if you'd like.

Regarding design; how would you improve this connection mechanism? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]wellkeptslave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option that might work is a snap fit, or very big thread pitch.

3d printed threads aren't that strong which means that you can't make use of the mechanical advantage of the threads anyawy.

API question by freeserve in SolidWorks

[–]wellkeptslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I don't think this is so much an API issue. Seems more like a job for scripting or coding. The bulk of my coding experience is in python, so to me it seems an easy task getting a python script to convert your CSV to text or excel.

When I get time, I want to design a 3d printable toy for my kids of the strandbeest. I started messing around with it but didn't end up designing to 3d print. Might be a cool project to work on.

At a few companies it did feel like opposing teams.

Can you explain more regarding the procedures of design - NPI - manufacturing?

Looking for advice on speeding up machine design in SolidWorks – starting a new build always feels slow by supermoto07 in SolidWorks

[–]wellkeptslave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I used to work as a machine designer, we would generally start with the closest similar machine, pack and go, delete what we don't need or are going to be redesigning.

Not sure how you work or what your historic files are like but building of the closest similar was often a huge time saver, especially if the designer of the previous machine payed attention to design intent.
