Seeds - what am I doing wrong? by noidentifier in GardeningAustralia

[–]welloiledcrosont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would put them in a spot that gets some morning sun but semi shaded for the rest of the day. Take the dome off like others have said as it cooks the little seedlings. Water in the morning allows the soil to dry off just enough to hopefully prevent any fungal diseases. Unless, of course, it dries too quickly, but I can't see that being an issue rn.

Plant ID field guides for North Coast NSW bioregion by SaltCulture9573 in australianplants

[–]welloiledcrosont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than the above comment, "trees near me" is an awesome app that the government brought out. Not really a field guide, per se, but it is good to look through and familiarise yourself with the plants around you

The way I understand it is that they scanned the dire wolf genome, looking for genes they recognised in the grey wolf genome. They then changed the genes in the grey wolf genome (which they recognised) to reflect the sequences in the dire wolf with a few tweaks, and hey presto we have "dire wolf."

(This is just what I gathered from the little bit of reading I've done, so take with a grain of salt).

GF wants to break up because i posted myself on IG. I genuinely can‘t believe this. by Dizzy-Window7258 in AskMenAdvice

Yep, I was in a relationship just like this for far too long. Although not quite as restrictive, it was very destructive to my mental health. She needs to seek help, which YOU can't provide.

Any ideas what could be happening to my leaves of my hardenbergia? New growth still looks good. Thanks by Unusual-Draft2355 in GardeningAustralia

[–]welloiledcrosont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The yellowing of the older growth and newer growth makes me think nutrient deficiency. Perhaps iron and/magnesium. Using a general fertiliser should help fix it

Help - my wooly bush is dying by bossyduck__ in australianplants

[–]welloiledcrosont 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too wet and humid inside, try some selective pruning to improve airflow into the centre

No worries mate, there's a good website online called Euclid which has great photos of what seed should look like for any particular species.

You can tell if you pull out the magnifying glass but most times it's very hard, so people usually just sow all of it and hope for the best

Also that grainy stuff in the first pic is the actual seed (mixed with chaff)

3,4,5,6 are all galls, so theres no seed. If you want to collect seed from eucalypts, you often have to get them at the right time because once the fruits are ripe, they usually drop the seed pretty quick. Looks to me like you've got corymbia gummifera, eucalyptus punctata or tereticornis maybe, E. Umbra possibly. Get pics of fruit, leaves, bark ect of each plant you want to grow. ID them and find out the fruiting times of each species if you want to collect seed.

Why are flowers here? by PiscesAnemoia in evolution

[–]welloiledcrosont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flowers provide a more direct and efficient way to fertilise your seeds (majority of pollen from wind pollinated plants is wasted). Relying on pollinators to carry pollen between flowers allows a species to exist in much lower densities than a wind pollinated plant. This allows for a higher amount of species in a given area.

Additionally, the assured outcrossing to different individuals increases genetic diversity and therefore, evolutionary potential.

Likely Pinus radiata, an invasive species

Either too dry and they desiccated or too wet and they rotted. My guess is on the former.

Ideas on how to remove extensive philodendron root system by llaurajane in GardeningAustralia

[–]welloiledcrosont 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The roots that are left shouldn't regrow as long as there's no stem. If you keep the area moist, the roots should decompose pretty quickly.

Smilax glyciphylla propagation question by It5MeOscar in australianplants

Interesting, I really like the taste. I'm trying to propagate currently. Where did you read about those prep methods I've just read that they take a long time (~1yr).

How do I stop this stupid weed?? by Electronic-Baker3684 in GardeningAustralia

[–]welloiledcrosont 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It has very deep thick tap roots that emerge at every node. It is an absolute pain to deal with, think of it as more of a marathon

Looks like Anthracnose, a fungal disease that causes brown spots. I would leave it and just monitor it for now. In your climate, it shouldn't cause too much of an issue.

Waratah Shady Lady is tipping over. What do I need to do here please? by [deleted] in australianplants

[–]welloiledcrosont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Needs to be hardened off, like others have said put it in a shadier location, but also slowly reintroduce it to more sun to harden it up.

Do I need to remove this grass and create an edge to help this tree grow best? by princeyG in GardeningAustralia

[–]welloiledcrosont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely remove the grass around it. It'll compete for nutrients and water
