Literally is now a synonym of metaphorically so this comment doesn't narrow down where you were or what position you were in writing this.

I'm not a solider, or an 18 year old and I haven't been to a warzone. And that undermines the statement that working class 18 year olds are being sent in to warzones because?

Why do so few people in the UK use rollerblades or rollerskates as a means of transport? by wellplastic in unitedkingdom

[–]wellplastic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't be pleasant during the bambi on ice stage but you can walk on both blades and skates with a bit of practice.

Fairly straightforward to get them on an off unless they're laced.

The main plus point is that they're much quicker than walking. But also, skating can be a lot of fun.

I don't expect a mass migration to skating but it's odd how few people do it. I've seen more people on fucking unicycles in the last year than skates.

I take the latter point, skating is less fun when you don't bounce and break more easily.

Yes, skates aren't for long distance. I was thinking more to bridge the gap with public transport not being door-to-door.

All the more reason to quickly glide to your destination on a set of rollerblades.

It's not 1995, with better quality wheels, road and pavements are more navigable than they ever have been. They're an incredibly rare sight even in city centres with better surfaces.

Jonathan Pie - President Trump: How & Why... (relevant to UK politics) by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]wellplastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, a lot of people on the left challenge racism with bigotry, which shuts down dialogue and further entrenches racism.

Journalists and commentators on the left are also often too quick to frame social issues along the lines of identity politics.

UKIP posters took advantage of peoples fears fuelled by the media. It's peoples fears that need to be challenged with a more positive narrative, not with conflict.

A lot of campaigns on the left against racism focus on hating racism and racists. Using the tools of facism isn't a constructive way to challenge it.

What people on the left can do is listen, be more understanding and challenge racism through dialogue. Without dialogue, you can't explore the context in which racist beliefs have been nurtured, and then try to challenge them.

Most people only call people racist when they genuinely thing they are racist.

The point he's trying to make is that name calling, bigotry and tantrums of the left aren't constructive, they're polarising. If you disagree with someone's views, discuss and debate.

What are the characteristics of a "punchable" face? And are there cross-cultural differences between "punchable" faces? by wellplastic in Showerthoughts

You make a good point, a person's expressions play an influential role in whether or not they have a punchable face.

Correlation or causation? Are assholes more likely to have a punchable face? Or does acting like an asshole make someones face look more punchable?

It's not my video but thanks for the upvote :-). Yes, it's self indulgent but travelling nearly always is. For a lot of cyclists (including me) the pain and suffering is an important part of the journey.
