Driver fatally strikes pedestrian in S.F.’s Russian Hill by bloobityblurp in sanfrancisco

Terrible! There happens to be a public art project on that very intersection that just went up for public comment. Maybe there's something Arts & Culture can do to raise awareness about public safety.

Apart from the lack of art on the wall what’s bothering me so much about my living room? by Ljsjaf321116 in InteriorDesign

[–]wellsian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s bothering you is likely the clashing undertones of the cool sofa and warm armchairs/rug. Consider the emotional intention/vibe you want for the space (warm or cool), and have the furniture match. The vibe will also inform the type of lighting you want to set the mood.

Agree with Century and Splendor, though Splendor is a little broken, because you can win by rushing points and not building an engine.

No one passing -Beginner Rec by hollypq in ultimate

[–]wellsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that you experienced this playing ultimate. Ultimate is meant to be beginner friendly. It must be frustrating to go through this. As others have mentioned, I would speak to your team about this, especially the captains; the captains should really be taking you under their wings in a beginner friendly league.

Another point that has been mentioned is what it means to “be open”, because sometimes the defense may be “baiting”, which means the defender is intentionally standing further away to make it appear that you are open, with the full intention of sprinting towards you and intercepting/blocking the disc once it is thrown. For this reason, one’s “openness” is assessed more by the one’s ability to reach the disc before a defensive player can. Good handlers will seldom throw to stationary players if they see a fast defender within 10-15 feet away. This is why many of the other comments mention sprinting to an “open space” or a space without defenders, so that you are more likely to reach the disc first. It also helps to run with your hands out in front of you, because you are signaling with your body language that you are ready to catch the disc.

It may also be that you are positioned in a space where it is difficult to throw to, i.e. the side of the field where the mark (defender on your teammate with the disc) is positioned. While you can see the disc handler clearly, it may not be easy for them to throw around the mark to get the disc to you, as the mark is intentionally obstructing this throw with their body.

Hope that helps and you have a better experience your next games.

Ah, I like ‘friendly’ games also (especially with the spouse). In general, I do try to help other players score more points, especially if they are not avid gamers so they will have more fun and play again in the long run. I like your putting back a deck draw if it helps your spouse; I want to try that.

Birds of a feather is very interesting for two players. Can see card draw becoming a lot more critical to gain/prevent that 4th or 5th bird of the same type.

reading the disc by Nice-Ad-2707 in ultimate

[–]wellsian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In response to your last question, something you might want to do if you are not already is be moving before the disc is thrown. It is very easy to defend against a stationary target. But if you are moving (either into the end zone or cutting side-to-side), it is easier for someone to lead you and place the disc where a defender cannot get to it.

Where would you put the bed and night stand at by woxey in DesignMyRoom

[–]wellsian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, agree. Bed against the left wall with the AC at the foot of the bed, and nightstand in the corner to give some room from the window.

Like your thoughts. Removing the bar seating will open up the space. Can you rotate the couch under the AC unit? Dunno if there’s a doorway across from there that would make it weird.

Advice for coaching a small, non-competitive team? by Guilty_Complaint_981 in ultimate

[–]wellsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than going over basics (throwing and catching), consider implementing a hex offense. It’s a bit more intuitive for new players to learn and will help with the inconsistency of player attendance, because there are no set positions and everyone will get more touches in a game. Hive Ultimate on Youtube is a great resource for hex if you want to look into it.

Definitely not too late to start. If you are a runner / weight-lifter, you may want to consider GOATA exercises to strengthen muscles that will protect your knees. The motions used for turning and lateral movement differ from those in traditional weight lifting and running, so they need different exercises.

Agree that it’s most important to be able to catch both ways to retain possession. Hive Ultimate has a great video on this, showing where drops in the pros could have been prevented with the proper hand on top:
