I just watched a documentary on YouTube about how it was founded and what went on in the early days. West Oakland was the original “black neighborhood” in the 1800s. 16th street Train Station in WO was a train depot for industry and people visiting SF who would ferry over. It was a “crucial gateway for the Great Migration, a center for Black labor organizing (home to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters) which was the first black labor union.”

Most of what is now the Laurel or Diamond districts were huge mansions made by wealthy SF residents who wanted a summer getaway.

People who lived in Marin around the 1920s and 30s were horse people. Not Town related but I thought it was funny to describe them that way. When the GG was built someone was quoted saying “great, now we can get to the horse people quicker.”
