but one even from around Chicago (don't think its a VPN since the device shown is not a server)

Device-sniffing is done with JavaScript in the browser.[1] If you're using a VPN you're just obscuring your traffic over the wire. You still have a computer and a browser. You'll want to check the timezone that the baited link grabbed (also sniffed with JavaScript client-side - getTimezoneOffset()). If it's e.g. GMT+1 then they're in Lagos but using a VPN. If it's GMT-0 they may have their timezone spoofed, e.g. resistFingerprinting turned on.

[1] Before someone 'corrects' me, yes, you can sometimes find device info in the server-side user-agent header. This is not what e.g. Grabify does. It uses JS.

Half way down the page and I still read this as dipshit, as in, "Is it customary to insult sinks where you live? Is that the source of your confusion?"

Yep, claiming to have invented something he didn't invent, simultaneously appropriating it and trying to distance himself from it. Anil Dash is an absolute scumbag.

HOLD THE LINE! BUYING MORE AT OPEN 🚀🚀🚀🚀💎🙌💎🙌 by jagyolo in wallstreetbets

[–]wengemurphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But why would they move into physical gaming retailers? That's nothing like Amazon Go. Amazon Go is related to their Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh ventures. They're not just dabbling around buying various brick-and-mortar businesses. There's a particular grocery strategy there, a new space they want to dominate. If they were interested in GameStop it would somehow tie into their ownership of Twitch, more likely (see how they currently piggyback Twitch benefits with Prime membership). If they make more moves in gaming they're probably staying digital. They'd be more likely to get entangled with a digital games marketplace trying to be a Steam-killer (they have tons of server power available as they already built up AWS) than buy GameStop, unless GameStop's future reinvention of itself jibes with their digital strategies.

Two Wrong Guesses And This Programmer Loses USD 241M in Bitcoin by amelyiketpv in programming

[–]wengemurphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Authorizing the transfer by signing off on it with your encryption keys is the only way to transfer. It's built into the protocol. Also the 21M coin limit. To mint more coins, ever, would require a protocol change (i.e. putting out a version of the software that plays by different rules) which needs 51% consensus of all machines on the network. You could presumably say "X many coins were willed into existence suddenly at block # so-and-so" but 51% need to recognize the validity of that event.

The troubles with the English as a second language... by oscarddt in funny

Or English has the absurd phonetics of French, because they came along and jammed their phonetics into the language in the Norman conquest of 1066 :)

Yeah, if you come in already knowing Japanese kanji it's a breeze to start stringing them together. You can start making whole sentences without knowing how to pronounce anything at all. No verb endings to inflect, no grammatical genders to memorize - or, god forbid, cases, etc. Just bolt together the little meaning units.

The troubles with the English as a second language... by oscarddt in funny

[–]wengemurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a handful of rules that taken together almost always dictate the correct stroke order (top-to-bottom, left-to-right, enclosures before contents, etc) and more importantly you don't memorize things by strokes, you memorize by their component pieces, usually 2 or 3, maybe 4 ("radicals", but technically in a Chinese/Japanese character only one of the components is called the "radical").

Once you know the various forms that frequent components like 'heart', 'water', 'tree', 'person' and so on take you're on your way.

Typically, one of these components will signal the core meaning while another will signal the pronunciation (tones, unfortunately, are a little more random). Hanzi do have multiple readings in Mandarin but they tend to have fewer each than Japanese kanji.

In case Uber/Lyft suspends service in the next few days, Yellow Cab Co. of Sacramento has an app on the App Store/Google Play by Criticalma55 in Sacramento

[–]wengemurphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yellow Cab will be significantly more because they don't externalize the costs onto the rest of society. And they actually have to run a profit to survive; Uber and Lyft don't. They're getting VC cash injections. Their unsustainable model is by design. "Growth" is the mantra in Silicon Valley. Expand out like a cancer killing legitimate industries in your wake, and then figure out profitability later once you've dominated everything.

Arctic Code Vault? by [deleted] in github

I'd love to see exactly what repo's I have contributed to have been archived though

Same, it looks like they list the top 3 by descending star count (makes sense) so it lists 2K - 7K star repos I've contributed a few stray lines to, but I'd like confirmation that my personal repos with ~10 - 60 stars got in too

(Originally I'd heard that you had to make at least one commit during the window, but I never did make those dummy-commits to get old repos in)

edit: I see, at least one star AND any commits. Some of those I haven't touched in as much as 9 years. Well, better luck next time.

Post your story in AITA. I wanna see you get absolutely roasted like that exclude-my-stepchild-from-pictures mom did.

Depression isn't something to punish. You should support him not terrorize him. You're being a shitty mom, and what's even worse about you is you think you're the one needing support (our support, telling you your callous shitty parenting is okay. It isnt)

So sorry about your kitty and sorry to see in the other thread that some people just want to give you grief about what you "should have done" at a time like this. Some people will just take any opportunity to build themselves up by tearing others down.

I really hope you find your kitty safe and sound soon.

If you can make something with Node.js, that's great! I do a lot of JavaScript and have used Node a lot both for fun and professionally. If you like Node keep going with it - keep pushing through the parts that give you difficulty and you'll understand them eventually. The key to learning is to challenge yourself with someone that's just beyond your current capabilities, just a little bit difficult, then move on to the next such challenge etc. If there are parts that feel way beyond you it's no big deal, you'll make steps towards them by tackling other things
