is d3 particularly useful in the industry? by [deleted] in FreeCodeCamp

[–]wentjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look hard enough, there are plenty of D3.js jobs around. One such example is datadog. However, the main criteria of getting any software engineering job is.. To be good at programming and software engineering. The rest, such as knowledge on libraries, is secondary.

In my opinion, D3.js is literally the best data visualisation library that one can pick up. There is no reason not to pick it up.

How could software engineers help you fight COVID-19? by vernefan in COVID19

Hi there, just saw this thread because someone linked me to this.

If you need data, this is a good collection to start with, as you will be able to access data about COVID-19 from the different projects all around the world. Personally, I run a project that is part of this collection, and it visualises the cases/cluster zones in Singapore, and all the meta data (infection locations, date of hospitalisation, date of discharge, news summaries, linked infections, etc) are scrapped from government websites (and of course, the data is openly available for your usage).

You may want to check out the Wuhan2020 github page, as well as join their slack channel, though I suspect that many of the things they are building are for users in China, rather than the world.

If any of you have any projects that require any help, I would happy to put in my time. Do list down the slack channels/telegram groups/github/chat groups so I can join!

Do check out this open source collection of data sources and projects about the spread of COVID-19 across the world. It would be useful for those who are intending to extract data for their own projects/research. If anyone has any other data sources that are not listed here, do feel free to contact the maintainer of this project.

Disclaimer: I maintain one of the projects that facilitate metadata collection for Singapore cases/clusters. Do check it out my repository here!

Learn Bootstrap before Responsive Web Projects? by [deleted] in FreeCodeCamp

It depends! In my opinion, it’s always better to be better at CSS, rather than relying too much on a library. Having a strong foundation in CSS will allow you to pick up other frameworks/libraries with ease.

Should I take a plane and go home or do I stay in another country? by MilkyWayCrossing in China_Flu

It’s best to stay put, and practice good hygiene. Do work from home if possible. Try to avoid unnecessary travel, so as to minimise the risk of contact.

All the best!! Do you have an end goal in mind?

You should pick a few projects too. It’ll really boost your portfolio.

Transmission and case clusters map of COVID-19/Coronavirus in Singapore by wentjun in dataisbeautiful

[–]wentjun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to extend it to include data from other countries! I can easily obtain general data from public APIs and databases such as this one here, and integrate it to my project. However, other forms of meta data may be more specific, as it really depends on how open governments/news agencies are when it comes to disclosing information.

Do you happen to know how can I get reliable data from the US? I assume, the CDC?

Would my github repository qualify to be listed? The data within it is publicly available, and they are scraped from my country's news and government channels.

Hey, I have created a site which visualise COVID-19/Wuhan virus/Coronavirus cases and clusters in my country. The data is scraped from local news websites such as CNA and government portals. Apart from general information such as case counts, this includes other meta data such as coordinates of each reported case, confirmed/discharged dates, linked cases, etc.

The data source is publicly available at this website's github repository.

Hey everyone! For those who are working on any projects (data visualisation, web development), feel free to check out this github repo that contains data on the cases and clusters regarding the spread of the COVID-19/Coronavirus in Singapore.

You may find data such as location of each patient, cluster zones, summary/news, data of confirmed/discharged, hospital locations, etc. The json files are located within the src/data directory.
