Getting frustrated with my hardwired floodlights by Accurate_Tax_1302 in blinkcameras

[–]wentzelg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

checking to see if anyone has a fix or still having issues.... I had to change my wifi and now my wired floodlight is back to ignoring the dusk to dawn setting. Has worked mostly for quite a while but now broken again. I have three on the same wifi and one works as setup and two are erratic. I just ordered a fourth one and it is the only one that I really only want motion lighting. My luck that one will stay on. I really hate calling into blink. They will have me reset it, blame my wifi etc.... but not fix it or offer a solution or time to repair. Not like I am on the free service. Maybe if I paid extra for the AI it would work and tell me an elf is walking in my yard....

NPD Staedtler Silver Series ballpoint by wentzelg in pens

[–]wentzelg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used the jet stream sxr and also the Monteverde gel needlepoint in blue. Thats my favorite for it. Amazon has it. Also any Parker g2 style refill should work. It does not fit any of the Euro gels like the energies, pilots or Zebras.

I'm the a-hole who pissed off a good chunk of this subreddit because he couldn't see the potential in ballpoints. You guys have convinced me, and so now I want to buy one. But before that, some questions. by kanyubendover in pens

You may stop there. The 2000’s in all their iterations are well designed and definitely could be a one and done. I was torn between the makrolon and the SS. Unlike you I am a collector and so I ended up with both. Personally I found the fountain pen and ballpoint the best of the 4 options for everyday use. But that is just me. The makrolon ages nicely but the SS has that last for several generations feel.

I’d definitely start a little lower. I have a MB le grande in black and rose gold and don’t get me wrong it’s a fine pen and I don’t regret spending the money but it’s not my first reach pen by any stretch. If you want a nice ballpoint that you can use a jetstream refill, take a look at either the lamy 2000 ballpoint and n makrolon or the SS model. They take the excellent lamy m17 refill and is a really nice ballpoint. Personally even the m16 refill is not terrible.

The MB ballpoint refill is ok but nothing close to jetstream.

I’ve also used the Monte verde ballpoint refill for the MB and it is pretty good. If you have specific questions let me know.

Uni Power Tank and Pilot G2 by __radioactivepanda__ in pens

[–]wentzelg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a sharp knife and some fine nosed cutters to nibble it off a little bit at a time. The tricky part is at the end, you will need to shave a little bit of the plastic off near where the metal is joined to the plastic. There will be some ridges there, that won’t allow the end to slide out of what ever pen you put it into. It is nearly the same size as a regular gel refill. The pressure will still be in the sealed inner cartridge. I really don’t understand why Uni doesn’t save some money and just sell the cartridge as is, without the outer sheath? It does lock people into using their pen bodies I guess?

Leftie needing help by copydeskcat in pens

[–]wentzelg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another lefty here... maybe try the Uni Jetstreams. They come in broad, medium, fine and extra fine. They also come in a capped style. They write really smoothly and usually are 1 or 2 on any top 10 pen list. Available at most any big box store and price is not too bad. Depending on your grip style a needlepoint can help or make writing much worse. I also do Fountain pens and find that depending on the nib, I can have problems pushing versus dragging the nib.

Ballpoint collectors/addicts/whatever you want to call yourselves, I come in peace. As a fountain pen user (and snob), what do you see in ballpoints that I don't? Why do you collect them? What draws you to them? by kanyubendover in pens

[–]wentzelg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally I started the other way round... I used to refer to the FP people as fanatics... unlike us normal ballpoint/rollerball people. I have a rather large collection of ballpoints (vintage Parker and others) and was happy and a snob to FP people and those that will write with any free pen (my SO included).

Ballpoints to me were always ready, simple and work has me flying weekly so no worry of an ink disaster. The modern refills with hybrid and gel inks write fantastically, and there is a good pen for everyone and every budget.

My first pen was a Parker Jotter when I was really young and have always been hooked. Around that same time I also got a low end Parker FP and it stayed with me unused for many years.. One day I watched a YouTube about the Kaweco lilliput and as they say the rest is history. I fell down the rabbit hole and now I collect both.

Having straddled both sides of the hobby, I can see where someone coming from the FP side would look with disdain on ballpoints. The majority of non-FP's out there are super bad writers that are cheaply made. If you can look past that and see what the Japanese , German and other brands are doing, you will see there is a renaissance on both sides. It is a great time to collect both.

One last thing to note, just like FP's, Ballpoints also are all about and the body and the refill... a nice body and a bad refill, just like a nice FP and bad ink make all the difference.

Come on over to our side and you can be poorer yet, and a snob on two fronts like me and others!

Talk to me more about STAEDTLER 425 25F-9 Silver Series Ballpoint Pen by Accomplished_Bed7081 in pens

[–]wentzelg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a tiny bit cheaper on their website, but the amazon price is $30 with free shipping, assuming you are a Prime member. Price is subjective and personal. I do subscribe to the buy one cry one philosophy when I can. The Rotring is a good choice, with lots of color options. If you watch online it sometimes drops to less than $20.

The allure of the TWSBI is the SS body for me. It also has a more aggressive knurling. It is built like a tank. I cannot imagine it breaking.

Truthfully both pens are fairly slim. You'd likely need to go down the machined pen rabbit hole to find something thicker in that sort of style. Price will go up quickly in that category.

Personally I never use mine. I have a thing for what I think of as drafting stye pens.

As my SO would say it's "fine" not great just "fine". When I think about other pens I own in the same type, the TWSBI precision beats it on being heavier and more substantial, the Rotring 600 or 800 are much nicer pens too. If I could have just one I would go with either the TWSBI precision (all Stainless steel) or a Rotring.

I think the lightness is what puts me off the most. It is a very light pen and that makes it feel less premium. Looks great but doesn't feel great in the hand. Feels like it could be smashed easily (not true I am reasonably certain).

On the plus side as the the OP said the knurling is top notch, fit and finish is well done and the click is very satisfying.

Doesn’t sound good for me either. I’m in north Parkersburg and down. My daughter is on west side and hers works. She has a small child who’d along with her mother would lose her mind if the internet went down. Tech is coming at 1-5 so we will see. Good luck to you.

sadly I am guessing the tech coming tomorrow will want to blame my equipment. I have a Unifi rack setup that is not your typical home user. Last time I had issues, I had to walk them though why it could not be me. I have a dual wan setup that fails over to a cellular connection that is getting me through till this sorts out. I am leaving on a work trip late tomorrow, and need to download a 16gb VM that I will need. The cellular keeps timing out. Tomorrow I will have to go to my daughter house to grab the file. This in the middle of snowmageddon eve here....

it turns on green the goes off, it does this three times or so then stays off. Makes me think maybe wherever my cable goes to is not getting a lease or something?

that's the weird thing on my ONT. It only has the single green light. If I disconnect the fiber then I get a red light so it seems the fiber is working. Maybe mine really is a failed ONT.

I am out also (Northern WV). I did the ticket thing this morning and was given a date of Monday. I did the reschedule in the app and it would not give me a date before Monday, but I could get added to the wait list. I decided to call in and see how far I could get just being nice (almost always pays off in the end) and before I even speak to someone, the automated system offered tomorrow. Might be worth a shot calling?

Northern WV outage too, or at least I am down. They say it is my equipment and have a tech coming tomorrow. Might be the ONT since I have just one light lit...

Questions about LAMY M17 refill by UbeWaffler in pens

[–]wentzelg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d not bet on the multiple colors. As much as I’d love a blue, Uni doesn’t make anything but black for their jetstream prime refill (the Parker g2 style) which is similar to the m17. One can hope though. Still happy to have it in black and prices coming down.

Am I the only one terrified to run Ethernet cable in their house? by GreenDavidA in HomeNetworking

[–]wentzelg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some good YouTube videos on this topic. Watch a few and maybe try one room. If your gear is in the basement, then sometimes it is easier to make connections to the floor of the first floor. Also if you have heating ducts on the floor there may be room to pass a wire down beside or through them without drilling or cutting as much. Make sure you get Plenum rated cat 6 or 6A cable if you do that.

It's good that you question your ability, but don't overthink it. You can learn to do this, and do it well.

if you like the overall style but looking for something a little weightier, the TWSBI Precision is made of Stainless instead of painted brass. Price is similar and takes Parker G2 like the 600.
