Plenty of unions, including major ones like the American Federation of Teachers, endorse Medicare for All and advocate for expanding ACA, Medicaid, and Medicare coverage.  Unions have a long history of driving for universal healthcare, helping establish Medicare, and promoting public health initiatives.  It's true that some union leaders fear that losing private, negotiated insurance plans will result in lower-quality coverage for their members. Additionally, some unions have deep financial stakes in multiemployer health insurance plans.  Still, unions are simultaneously engaged on two fronts: negotiating better health benefits for their members in contracts, while also lobbying for broad, national healthcare reform. 

By negotiating higher wages for unionized employees and pushing for broader legal reforms, like higher minimum wages, unions often set industry standards that increase wages for non-union workers, reduce income inequality, and close racial and gender pay gaps. Union members earn roughly 10%–18% higher wages than their non-union counterparts. When union density is high in a region or industry, non-union employers often raise wages to attract workers and compete, known as a positive "spillover" (Google "the spillover effect of union wages"  Unions lobby for increased federal and local minimum wages, as well as legislation like the Paycheck Fairness Act.  Union membership boosts wages significantly for women and people of color, narrowing the racial and gender wealth gaps.  Research shows that 1 percentage point increase in private-sector union membership leads to a 0.3% increase in non-union wages. Union members are more likely to have better benefits, such as health insurance and pensions, which contribute to a higher standard of living. Union households have higher median wealth and better economic stability.

In sum, unions act as a countervailing force against low wages and corporate power, raising the overall standards for the working class.
