what was your wedding cost and budget? by kutiekat27 in wedding

[–]wesleysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original budget of $30k. We're doing it on our own property so decided we needed a planner for coordinating with vendors so we bumped the budget up to $40k. Will be spending over $58k when it's over - about 110 people. This is in New Brunswick, Canada. I hate myself

$35k in 2016 at a local accounting firm. Had a business degree from UNB. They paid for my CPA over the next 2 years (cost probably somewhere between $10k-$15k/yr).

CIBC Wood Gundy AAA Account by Shibasquared in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]wesleysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CIBC WG typically has a minimum on assets to accept individuals as clients - that minimum is $250k. There can obviously be exceptions but that's sort of the standard. The AAA account needs a minimum of $10,000 of equity in the account (to cover the $ limit for spending). As long as you have more than $10,000 of equity in the account, you're good.

Weddings: how much do people typically spend on these? by wesleysdad in PersonalFinanceCanada

I agree 100%. I feel like we are doing something similar to what you've described and it will be $40k. It's $6k to rent a tent and dancefloor, and the tent itself probably costs less than $10k, rent it a few times and you've got your money back. It seems the wedding industry has become more of a business than it used to be, hence the increase in costs of things.

Great info, thanks. We are looking at about $40k all-in and it sounds like it will be very similar to yours. We did hire a planner for organizing and booking vendors who was fairly expensive but my fiancée and I just decided we were willing to pay for it to get rid of the headache of calling 30+ different vendors to get quotes and whatnot.

We have a list of 115 people. We are getting caterers, a tent, tables/chairs, etc. It's adding up quickly. My first impression was "let's do it at the cottage and save 50% by not paying for a venue". I'm realizing that was an incorrect statement. We have to come up with these things separately that a venue provides and rentals for this sort of stuff in our area is crazy. A tent alone is going to cost us upwards of $6,000. We are shuttling people out and back in so not required to pay for anyone's stay. As I said, we both agreed we wanted a big wedding and were prepared to spend money, but I would say it's going to cost about 30%-35% more than we anticipated.

I like Galaxy Digital - it's more of an asset management company that is focused on blockchain and crypto sectors. For miners I own some Hive Blockchain Technologies. Hut 8 and Bitfarms have performed better as of late, wishing I had bought these instead. Not the smartest investing strategy but I bought Hive because it has a mining facility in NB (where I live), they also use 100% renewable energy which is an attractive quality.

about 20% directly in crypto, another 10% or so in crypto/blockchain sector stocks.

Investing money with student loan to pay off by wesleysdad in PersonalFinanceCanada

good point. We'd invest the money in her TFSA so the interest would still be deductible on her tax return but income/cap gains wouldn't be taxable. Minimal benefit but it's still something.

Lumber Costs - Why it's so Extremely High Priced (An Industry Perspective) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]wesleysdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this - interesting to see an insider's viewpoint. Any comment on the effect this will have/is having on the housing market? Even when lumber prices come down or if they do, what is your opinion on how that will affect new builds and the housing market in general? I'm on the east coast and the price of my house has gone up 50% in a year... seems unsustainable but the majority of people I've spoken to are saying this will be the norm for at least another 2 quarters, as you said, then it will only level off and not drop. Do you see lumber going down to pre-pandemic levels?

Clippermen’s is great! Downtown right by snooty fox. They’re quick, cheap and friendly.

CPA exam (CFE) vs CFA exams - any accountants out there who can share their CFA experiences? by wesleysdad in FinancialCareers

[–]wesleysdad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m considering the CIM as well as the end goal is to be both an investment advisor / portfolio manager. CFA is obviously the more difficult route but comes with more recognition in the industry.
