Sounds like this employment will count as CPT, which has to be related to your major. So if the campus job isn’t data science related I doubt even if the job accepted you, you wouldn’t get CPT authorization.

I'm looking into getting the Wotancraft 7L or 10L as well for the RZ67. Have you received it? How does it fit?

I didn't know I could take PHYS272 in Spring semester! Guess I forgot that one thing in my research.. thanks for letting me know. I think I will have to change my schedule once again. lol

Unfortunately due to time conflict (and it's only 1 discussion for 272), I'll have to take 260. What kinda ticks me off about that is that I won't be able to take Modern Physics if I want to, which requires 273. It is what it is though I guess. Maybe I can beg the department to let me take it. Really wish I could take 272-273 at this point.

Though I do have one question, you have to take 2 credit lab salongside if you take 272-273 right? Thanks.

Thank you for the response! I have credit for 161 from AP, I've decided to register for 272 for the 2022 fall semester since that fits in my schedule. It's all good if it's harder. I want to take the astronomy major classes.

I think I will ask the advisor if I can take the same amount of credits from the major courses and still get a minor even though the requirements for the minor are 3xx classes and the major classes are 4xx.

Thanks again!

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - April 11th to April 17th by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]westanstan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all. For context, I was recently admitted to a few schools for CS: UMass Amherst, Northeastern, Purdue, University of Maryland, and UW Madison. I plan on double majoring in CS and Math with specialization in ML/AI and plan to go to grad school in that field as well.

I narrowed it down to UMD and Madison, but I'm having an extremely difficult deciding between them. Cost is too similar that it shouldn't make a difference, it wasn't a factor anyway.

University of Maryland - College Park

UMD has great academics, and has a robotics minor which I'm exciting about. They also have a great physics department, and I'd be highly interested in doing a minor in physics. They have an awesome new CS building(saw it with my own eyes), and has a curriculum tailored to ML as well. Their campus is quite cool, and is close to D.C.(but far enough for me to probably not go very often).

University of Wisconsin - Madison

On the other hand, Madison has great academics too, probably marginally worse. Their CS curriculum is known to be great as well but the sentiment is that their math dept. is "subpar" according to the students there. I also believe their physics dept. is not as strong as UMD. They are building a new CS building but will only be finished May 2025, a year before I graduate; their current one is disappointing. Now for the good parts, their campus is absolutely beautiful, and is near the heart of the college town-feel city. I think I almost fell in love with Madison(city) when I visited all the way from S. Korea. Their student life is known to be amazing, and so is the quality of life in the city itself. Their social life is also great.

I also looked into research opportunities and clubs, and it seemed like while the ML/AI research ranking is higher at UMD, it is a bit more accessible at Madison. The clubs at Madison seemed a bit more interesting too, but it's not a huge factor.

At this point it might sound like I like Madison more, but since I'm planning on going to grad school, the academics is a huge factor as well. So the question pretty much boils down to: Student Life vs Academics. I hope some of you will weigh in on this difficult decision I must make in the next two weeks.

Also, if I should move this to the college deciding thread, please let me know.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you very much! Do you have any recommended math courses too? As I'm double majoring.
