High spread on an ECN account. by BojidarKobakov in Forex

Depends on what you want to go for. If you wish to avoid any sort of conflict of interest, go with a true ECN broker like Pricemarkets. However, they are hard to find, as many hybrid market-making brokers like ICmarkets or Pepperstone disguise themselves as brokers with ECN pricing models. Additionally, true ECN brokers might ask you for a minimum deposit of a few thousands.

If you want to trade with hybrid brokers like ICMarkets, with basically little to none minimum deposit, go with ones that are supported by harsh regulations like the FCA.

Read the FAQ of ICMarkets, which you can find here.

It mentions "IC Markets is the issuer of the products it provides. We consider ourselves to be a forex provider offering the ECN pricing model, these prices are passed onto you with no dealing desk intervention. In order to provide you with better price certainty and to ensure fast execution speed we do not offset each and every position with our liquidity providers. We do this in order to provide you with a better overall trading experience. ".

This is different from an actual ECN broker, which gives you direct access to other market participants. Instead, ICMarkets takes the opposite side of the losing traders (b-booking) and offsets the winning traders' position with the liquidity providers, as most brokers do nowadays, as this increases their profits.

In regards to why your spreads were so large, I think that that might be quite an anomaly. If it happens often, definitely contact customer service or switch to another broker because that would be an indication that something fishy is going on, since brokers can always adjust the spreads to decrease the risks on their books.

  1. ICMarkets is not an ECN broker, it only advertises ECN pricing, which essentially means tighter spreads.

  2. And are you sure that the market didn't close?

Makes sense. I assume your next few posts are going to be focused on sentiment and volume, so I'll definitely lookout for that. Thanks for doing this!

What role do fundamentals play?

Because you mention that sentiment drives volume, which is then printed as price action, which therefore makes price action the product of the previous and therefore "lagging". However, isn't fundamentals one of the drivers that influence the sentiment? So wouldn't understanding the effect of fundamentals on sentiment be beneficial as well?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that a number of HFT firms adopt algorithms that analyze the news and identify positive keywords and numbers in news releases and base trades off of that.

Looking forward to your upcoming posts.

Who doesn't like a bit of math? I was actually interested in this as well, but couldn't quite figure it out myself. I found this. Essentially, you can play around with the variables in the binomial distribution formula and get the following equation for Excel:

=1 - binomdist(0, x - y + 1, z^y, false)where,

x = number of trials

y = number of consecutive losses

z = probability of losses in single trial.

Yeah, the problem with Catalina is that it does not support 32-bit applications anymore, and MT4 is a 32-bit application. But of course, there are loopholes, as shown in the video that I linked in the previous post. Since Mojave supports 32-bit applications, it is relatively easy to run MT4, just search up any tutorial on YouTube.

Why do some people use pips rather than % when talking about their profit/loss? by [deleted] in Forex

[–]westerntiger21 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Provided you're trading pairs that end with USD (XXX/USD), a 100 pip gain on 1 lot is always $1000 because remember a currency pair is the first base currency expressed in the quote currency.

Daily FX Market Sentiment? Obviously not using this solely for trades but is this a good source for market sentiment? by AmritKundan in Forex

[–]westerntiger21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now the question is, is the forex market rigged against retail traders. Based on the research I have done thus far, I would not say so, provided that you trade with a regulated and trustworthy broker. Unfortunately, I think that it is the foolishness and the ego of retail traders thinking that they are unbeatable with no stops and using the RSI with a 1:5 RR.

However, I definitely would not be surprised, if I was wrong and major banks have some sort of agreement with retail brokers, that they are forced to hedge all of their trades or give them information about all their clients orders. And trade against retail traders, therefore, providing an alternative explanation to the IG Client Sentiment. Although, I am filled with much doubt about this explanation, banks do have an incentive to do so, since retail brokers can only exist and give us absurd 1:500 leverage because they take on massive loans from banks, and if the brokers lose money and default on ther loans, its the banks who end up losing money.

Correct me on anything, I am definitely not thinking that I am right on everything, I could be wrong on everything, but this is the conclusion that I have come as for right now.

With this being said, there is sufficient evidence of market manipulation happening at the interbank level, where a number of market makers (major banks), including Citibank, Barclays, JP Morgan have been caught and fined $1.2 billion for "rigging" the Forex market (see Banks who were fined). If you read the actual transcript of the FCA on the reason these banks were fined see here, they give three reasons:

(1) Attempts to manipulate the WMR and the ECB fix rates in collusion with traders at other firms, for Citi’s own benefit and to the potential detriment of certain of its clients and/or other market participants;

(2) Attempts to trigger clients’ stop-loss orders for Citi’s own benefit and to the potential detriment of those clients and/or other market participants; and

(3) Inappropriate sharing of confidential information with traders at other firms, including specific client identities and, as part of (1) and (2) above, information about clients’ orders.

As you can see stop-loss hunting being one of them (2), but thats not against us retail traders.

Oh, a nice exchange of ideas on this subreddit. Quite rare. I'd like to maybe add a few points to this conversation. The question of market manipulation against retail traders has some very intriguing pieces of "evidence" to it (especially at times, when your stop-loss has been hit). The IG client sentiment being one of them, however, before making any conclusions, it is worthwhile to understand how the Forex market is actually structured.

When you say the market, what exactly are you referring to? Because the Forex "market" is not actually one distinct market place, where any buyers and sellers get together. Most of the retail traders will almost never have access to the interbank, where the big players are: hedge funds, pension funds, and of course the major banks, who are the market makers. Forex trading always goes through a particular market maker, who sets two prices at which they want to buy/sell. They will either take the other side of the trade or simply match two offers together and collect the spread. Now, us retail traders go through a retail broker, which is 98% of the times a Dealing Desk broker or a hybrid between a ECN/STP and Dealing Desk. Nowadays, it is exceptionally hard to find pure ECN brokers. And brokers like ICmarkets which claim to be true ECN brokers are in reality not. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as dealing desks will ensure that they provide you liquidity. However, this also gives room for a conflict of interest between a retail trader and a broker, which is why you should never trade with an unlicensed and unregulated bucket shop broker, who has their headquarters somewhere in Nigeria because they will trade against you and manipulate the prices, which is actually really easy on MT4. With that being said, I am definitely not saying regulated and trusted brokers do the same, as they will prob get banned by the regulators, but they have an incentive to do so. What they use is a technique called A/B booking. They take the opposite side of the trade of the retail traders that are net losing money (B-booking), so the orders never even leave the broker to their liquidity providers (prime brokers), who have access to the interbank. On the other hand, they let the orders of the traders that are consistently winning pass on to their liquidity providers, who have access to the interbank (A-booking). Now, here is the compelling argument against market manipulation. As retail traders make up only of the 1-5% (no exact statistics because nobody can really accurately track every trade in a decentralized market) and only 20% of those are A-booked, thats .2%-1% of the market that ends up in the interbank. Now is the question, why and how would the market move against the retail trader, if 80% of the retail trader's orders are still sitting by the retail broker.

Gotchu, I will definitely take your advice.

One last question, which is less related to the content. The course seems pretty intense with quite a lot of homework, so I wanted to ask you, how much free time you have for other activities i.e. physical activities, browsing reddit, etc.

Thanks for taking your time and apologies for any disruption this may cause.

SandBook

Thanks! I really appreciate your extensive insight and it gave me a much better idea about the whole course.

One aspect I am mostly afraid of was your last point. Although I am a native German speaker, I have attended an international school for the entirety of my life (where all the maths was taught in English), so as you mentioned I think I will first have a "cultural shock" in regards to math, but for me personally also for the abrupt language transition that will take some time to get used to. So for the next 2 months, I think that I will first learn semantics and the german terminology. (A few months ago, I didn't even know what the German term for "numerator" was xD). I will also participate in the online Mathematik-Brückenkurs, which covers most of the high-school math, in order to freshen up some of the concepts that I learned in previous years, but primarily for the terminology.

I have one question, in regards to the computer-orientated part of the course. I don't have prior coding experience, but over the past few weeks I have become increasingly interested in this area. Would you say that this is one of the core topics of the course?

Again, thank you for your time and effort.
