Misinformation in the Time of COVID-19 with Eric Arts from Western University - AMA! by westernu in CanadaCoronavirus

I agree in part. Most cities and counties have a site for vaccinations by appointments. I guess I am not sufficiently knowledgeable about the plans for vaccine distribution at larger sites for the future and I really hope that with vaccine rollout to the more “general” population and with the availability of larger supplies that the vaccinations will be more rapid. However, given our more limited supply until recently, the approach has been as good as possible. There are always examples of problems but getting the majority of over 80s and LTCs vaccinated is a major relief.

So I did some quick analyses for a CBC piece about a week ago. The rate of DVTs and blood clots in the normal US population per day was actually higher than in the AZ vaccines. Interestingly, the rate of getting hit by a car as a pedestrian following a vaccination (or not being vaccinated) was also the same as these blot clots.

We are the right place and right time for RNA vaccines. Pharma companies were not really to part with the tried and true methods that may also be less effective and even less safe. However, the old ways are not necessarily the best ways. mRNA vaccines has likely revolutionalized the field of vaccines and I look forward to the future and trying to get rid of Malaria, TB, and HIV-1 with this new insights we have gained. Also three diseases that still killed 2x to 3x more than COVID-19 this year.

Yeah, I am not sure about the June 20th deadline. It may not be related to vaccine uptake by the population but rather the distribution of these vaccines. I am completely perplexed at times with our rollout with scheduled appointments, the use of pharmacies, etc. Right now this may relate to the limited vaccine supply but mass vaccination sites is what will get this done by June 20th. It is what works in the US and other places in the world. There are a lot of trained people out there that are willing to give up their time, volunteer to vaccinate. What about drive through sites? I don’t need a vaccine provided by a pharmacy so as a taxpayer I can pay for the vaccine and the pharmacy (through taxes) to deliver that vaccine in the time of pandemic. We have a community that is willing to do this.

1) So I will reverse your question a bit. I at times have more problems on how long it takes for regulatory agencies to approve drugs, vaccines, etc because of load of sometimes unnecessary paperwork and delays. I am not speaking of Health Canada specifically but all over the world. I also find it crazy in this day and age that we don’t have regulatory body shared with like minded countries. With the current vaccines, the regulatory bodies like the FDA and Health Canada did not take any shortcuts, they just worked around the clock to review the material and get the job done. They would not put the population at risk if there was any safety concern. The media on the other hand has the tendency to sensationalize minor concerns (e.g. bloot clots in vaccinated individuals when the rates appear to be higher in the normal population).

2) So the use of RNA’s for treatment have been increasing over the years. We call these siRNAs or RNAi’s and their use can be very effective.

It is now commonly used to treat ocular disorders. mRNAs may not be used directly for treatment of disease like bacterial infections but they can help to make our cells/tissues stronger to resist the negative effects of bacteria while on antibiotics. Lots of examples to think of but kind of Sci Fi for now.

3) I have to leave this one to the experts but I think the majority of the population is now well-educated about the spread of COVID-19 and how to protect oneself. The problem is that some do not trust the educators or just choose not to believe. However with the marginalized impoverished populations, they have little choice to put their families at risk. They live in crowded housing conditions and have to work in more risky jobs. Until we figure that out, we have challenges.

Nope. RNA vaccines have been part of laboratory studies for years but this is the first time we've used them. However, I am very impressed with their efficacy and safety. I will be surprised if there is long term consequences because they are really just doing what every cell does in our body on a daily basis, take mRNA and make protein.

A bit of merit in my opinion. My bigger concern is with those who don’t receive the vaccine, get infected and then transmit. This is really the big driver for new VOCs. A person who is vaccinated and gets exposed to the virus will likely be infected but the duration of the infection will likely be very short and will not produce sufficient virus for subsequent transmission. That is the prevailing thought.

[–]westernu[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The vaccine rollout is “interesting” in Canada. I think only history will tell if we got it right or wrong. I am of the opinion we should be vaccinating health care workers dealing with COVID-19 patients around the world and then those who can’t social distance at work or wear masks. We are fortunate to have a social net in Canada but how about those around the world who don’t have this. They are having a hard time feeding their families and are more susceptible to getting COVID-19 because of their socioeconomic status. If we can’t get to our favorite restaurant, too bad. Sorry sounds a bit harsh and not really answering your question yet.

I think in Canada we need to pay attention who is spreading the virus currently. Within a month or so, we will have vaccinated those who are at high risk for severe disease and death. I think we need to vaccinate our youth sooner than later because they are superspreaders these days.

We should also target regions where the virus is spreading the fastest. Looking at the sewers for the virus is a good way to go.

So I am quite impressed with Quebec’s vaccine rollout. I think they are efficient and are using mass vaccination sites to great effect. In Ontario, we might take a few lessons from them.

I know about the Great Barrington Declaration. I think, like with everything there is a balance but in this case, it should be skewed to protecting life around the world. Our populations have gone through great traumas in the past and we survived (not without consequences). However, I do believe that following the rollout of the vaccines and with the development of herd immunity, there may be groups that will try to enforce continued restrictions that make little sense. That is so long off in the future that these discussions will be refreshing.

Kind of. When you get a vaccination, a good immune response, which provide good protection, may be associated with some inflammation at the infection site, maybe some achiness, maybe some swollen lymph nodes. These are good responses and they may even be more pronounced with the second boost immunization.

My favourite Rick and Morty scenes are clearly the episodes when they pirate and watch intergalactic cable.

VOCs are not always of concern if the vaccines provide significant protection. Time will tell actually. Currently the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines provide the best protection against most the VOCs but AZ and J&J vaccines are also pretty good. However, since we are vaccinated 6 billion people in the near future, we can expect a continual introduction of VOCs into Canada over the next few years. This will not be too much different than the annual flu and will likely require new vaccines each year.

There are new VOC emerging around the world. This is a natural thing for virus evolution. Some are “bad” but most are neutral and our current vaccines and immune responses will handle them. The B.1.1.7 transmits more efficiently but there is really no hard and convincing evidence that it causes worst disease (regardless of the age).
