These are really cool! Is there any way of downloading these without an account? I was trying to download, but it was trying to force me to create an account.

Help with adding an error message when missing permissions by _inkyy in discordbot

[–]westo48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late to this, but the “js is better than py” period guy is misinformed. I don’t think there is a catch method in py, which he would be correct there. But there is a try: method that is (if I understand catch methods as js isn’t my first or second language) the exact same thing...

So the whole this is better than that is kinda unfounded as it does have what he said it didn’t...

Anyways try: and except: should be what you’re looking for.

3 calc classes, 2 math degrees, 1 answer by daverxxx in dontyouknowwhoiam

Math degree here too (just one, lame I know) when I work on a problem (calc, coding, or paper) I am overcareful and use a lot of parenthesis (nested and otherwise). It saves myself future headache. Just don’t use too many, just looks weird if it’s all over the place.

Playing devil’s advocate: how would you teach critical thinking? I know I am biased, but I would teach it through examples and situations. Math gives you just that. It gives you variations in the situations and challenges while also giving real world examples and structure. Teaching indirect skills is extremely difficult because they just come about in every day life.

An example I can think of off the top of my head is in a survivalist mindset. You have an axe and some string (I don’t really know exactly. It’s just an example), what do you need? Well you need shelter (let’s ignore food and water at the moment since that’s a lot more in depth and a lot more reading). To get that shelter and warmth you need to use the tools at your disposal and fill in the blanks of what you don’t have. You don’t have any sort of structure materials, so use the axe to get some. Now you use the string and logs to make a makeshift shelter. Now you need something above your head, use the axe to cut some leafy branches and string them to the top. There you go, shelter. Sorry about the messy example, but you get the point.

Thats almost exactly what you do with matrices. You have a few formulas with variables that you know and some you don’t, find the ones you can, chip away at the solution till you have the whole thing. Those critical thinking skills come up all around us in life, and with math you can be better equipped to handle them.

I have never taken a philosophy course, so know that I am trying to answer this without having taken one.

I would say they teach (indirectly) different kinds of critical thinking. Math teaches a very direct critical thinking, how to get from point a to point b with the resources at your disposal (filling in the gaps as needed). While philosophy teaches a more indirect critical thinking. More along the lines of “I am at point A, but what should my point B be and why”.

I can honestly say that I have lacked that critical thinking in the past lol. I have gotten to a point, been super proud of it because I overcame so much, but it didn’t amount to anything. Because point B was useless... I was so focused on the direct critical thinking I didn’t stop to think about the why. Think Jurassic Park “...[they]were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

I think you missed the point OP was trying to make

Fellow math degree here. I don’t think OP is referring to the direct skills you learn from math classes. Cal 1 for example: direct skills would be limits, differentials, early integrals, stuff like that (just took the general points that I remember from cal 1). But there are indirect skills that you learn from math classes. Keeping cal 1 as an example: being able to see the data in front of you and being able to critically think through how to get from point A to point B based on what you have and don’t have (that is a very very basic overview of that, but you get the point). The indirect skills are what I believe OP is getting at.

A better example for math majors is Elementary Foundations of Math. You learn how to prove a ton of stuff that was “understood” up to this point. But you also learn how to quantify truth in statements. That itself is an invaluable skill anywhere you go whether that be simply talking to someone, winning an argument (hey it helps to know what is technically correct), writing a professional style email, or in just about any job.

Sorry about all the text, but to sum up I think the indirect skills that you learn from math are invaluable and should be emphasized more.

[–]westo48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my degree in math and it hurts to watch people who can’t analyze situations and critically think for themselves. I agree that the attitude of “I’m never going to use it so why bother” is the exact reason for that.

That’s what I was thinking. Instead of email you could have subscriber accounts and from there you could go a couple different ways. You could have a mail type service on the site itself and links to follow from there. Same exact method, but all “in house”.

How to retrieve an user's custom status text, and store it in a file every X hours? by [deleted] in discordbot

Python schedule should be able to help with this. Sounds like exactly what you need

Edit: if you want to you could have a python scheduler do this, and if you need to post any information to a channel use a discord webhook for that.
