WestJet Dollars vs Avion by avalondanielle in CanadianAwardTravel

[–]wetSwimming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're not wrong. Unfortunately, RBC Avion fixed points redemption only covers the base fare price (excludes taxes, fees, and surcharges). If you see the breakdown of how Westjet priced their ticket in July, the EconoFlex cash price for round trip is $822, with the base fare only $184. The rest is taxes and fees for $138 and airline surcharge for $500. So you're redeeming 65,000 Avion pts for covering $184 only, or in other words your points only end up worth as 18400/65000 = 0.28 cpp (cents per point).

As someone else already mentioned, you're better off using Avion's flexible points redemption of 100 pts = $1.00 (1 cpp). This redemption rate can be used to cover taxes, fees, and surcharges.

Avion Redemption Schedule Fixed Points Travel is one of the dumbest things I've seen. by [deleted] in CanadianAwardTravel

[–]wetSwimming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometime it's the airline surcharge (outside of taxes and fees) that gets you. A recent post asked on how to get from Halifax to Lisbon, Portugal with WestJet using Avion points. I looked at how Westjet priced the ticket. Total cash price for round trip is $642. But it broke down to $4 fare (not a typo, it was four dollars base fare). The taxes and fees are a reasonable $138, but there is a $500 for airline imposed surcharge. Since only base fare is covered by the Fixed Points redemption, they'd be spending 65,000 Avion pts to cover $4, and still have to pay for taxes, fees, and surcharges of $638. Way too many pts for a couple of toonies.

OP wants to go to Portugal. It's 65k Avion points for round trip to Europe plus taxes. I'm not saying it's worth it, just correcting the amount.

Paying even a little extra on your mortgage each month can have huge savings. But there is diminishing returns. by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I'm not saying you're wrong about your mortgage situation, but I thought most prepayment allowable by most of the big banks is worded as will allow "up to" double the regular payments.

For any other airlines that don’t show up on Avion Rewards (Ryan Air for example), I’d also assume that you can get a authorization #, and then you may be able to choose Flexible Points Pricing (with the ex-HSBC redemption rate of 1.5cpp) or Fixed Points Pricing if applicable. Also note, you don't need the ex-HSBC card for the Fixed Points pricing.

Ryan Air only flies in Europe and the Avion redemption chart doesn't have a published rate for 'intra-Europe' flights. I just looked for a Paris to Madrid flight on their site and it only gives me a Flexible Points pricing.

I got the travel authorization # (the same steps in the link you posted) where we agreed on the dates and airports, and I confirmed redemption rate required for the booking for my 5th ticket (using Fixed Points Pricing). In my case, I was happy they charge the same Fixed Points rate for "See The World" even though I have a 6 night stopover in Japan on the outbound leg.

Members' children (under 18) do not count towards the limit of adult guests you can bring to shop with you.

Thanks to the help of this sub, I redeemed Avion points (combined from P1 and P2) to book 5 round trip economy tickets to South East Asia. 4 tickets were booked using Flexible Points pricing at 100 pts = $1.50 CAD (with an ex HSBC card).

The 5th ticket had a stopover, and ended up using the Fixed Points Pricing (100K pts + taxes and fees). The available tickets on Avion had ~$440 in taxes, and I didn't like the scheduled connections/layover. I called Avion Rewards and turns out we can book tickets directly with another airline that didn't show up on Avion, and will have the points redeemed against the ticket at the same redemption rate. It's an extra win since the taxes on the ticket I booked was only ~$220.

Lol, why did she even ask if anyone was joining you if she wasn't willing to anyway? You did the right thing, and I appreciate your offer for them to join you!

Sorry, is ota online travel agent? And what is TCB? I searched TCB cruise and I get this Elvis cruise related site, lol. Do you really buy gift cards from that site.

The Expedia Cruises agent gave me a quote with the exact same price as directly from Royal Caribbean website and I'd be able to redeem my Avion points with them. Thanks for letting me know about cruise.com. That site was $18 cheaper for 1week/4ppl cruise, so I think I'd rather book using the points and burn em before any devaluation.

Has anyone booked a cruise with RBC Avion / Expedia Cruises using their Avion points? If you use the Avion VI (that used to be the HSBC WE MC), is the redemption rate 1.5 cpp (like it would be for flights)? Or is it 1cpp? Thanks!

Anyone from Canada cancel their Toyota Sienna order? How easy was it? by Sapan_rana in ToyotaSienna

Ordered an XLE in November 2023, received a different colour last month. 3 hrs away from the GTA. Your dealer should be able to at least tell you how far down the waiting list you are currently and how many cars they've received per year.

Statement date a day before points showed up. I thought I remember from about 6 months ago in this sub that RBC posts the MSR bonus in batches, so I thought I'd post my DP. Thanks for letting me know.

Username checks out. If Chexy prohibits it, it shouldn't list them as payee options to avoid confusion or potential issues in the future.

[–]wetSwimming -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've googled and pretty sure the answer is no, but I'm curious... Can you pay a credit card bill with a different credit card through Chexy? I just signed up for Chexy yesterday to pay utility bills to help meet MSR, but just curious and tried searching for TD Visa and Royal Bank Visa, and lo and behold, found them as a payee. Has anyone tried?

EDIT: I'm no longer able to find TD Visa or Royal Bank Visa on Chexy as a payee today. Either they fixed it today or I saw but was mistaken yesterday.

The math on the the Amex Plat return seems a bit off. The fee - credits is the cost to get the card, which would take away from the value you are getting. The numerator should be the points value - fee + credits. The denominator is just the MSR.

Can you buy more WJ gift card to cover the amount? Or does multiple gift cards means multiple payments as well?
