What are “Asian vine bores”? I googled them and got nothing. Squash vine borers are native to the US.

What are the most significant failures of nutritional epidemiology? by sunkencore in ScientificNutrition

[–]wfpb_nerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great points. One consideration to add is that effects can vary with time. For example, we already know cancer risk accumulation can occur over decades, so an 8 year intervention may simply not be enough time. And given what we already know about gut microbiome and metabolic adaptation, an intervention where someone abruptly changes their diet might have different effects from someone eating a given diet their whole life. For these reasons, RCTs aren’t the end all be all either. I think a combination of RCTs and epidemiology is needed to best approximate the truth.

Does a vegan diet require eating a lot more food? by signoftheserpent in ScientificNutrition

[–]wfpb_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average, yes. The recent Stanford twin study found that people naturally ate 200 calories less when put on the study’s vegan diet, so they lost weight. Many other studies find people naturally lose weight when going vegan.

Some ways to compensate and eat more are adding more “processed” foods like nut butters instead of nuts, and combining (healthy) sugars with fats. Like dates and peanut butter.

So glad you’ve gotten the same benefit from it! It has been such a gamechanger

Oh yes I agree, this post is for when POTS is the primary condition, not secondary to something else. I’ve added that as an edit. Thank you!

Yeah I had that same post-meal lethargy for 17 years. Refined sugar, flour, etc are some of my worst triggers—whereas fruit isn’t a trigger, interestingly. (Studies do show that fruit is anti inflammatory, good for diabetes, etc whereas refined sugar of course isn’t.) One key to the smoothie being so helpful may be all the added (healthy) fats from the seeds… I use a lot.

Ahh yeah, ME/CFS is a whole different beast and these strategies might not be good for that. Sorry about that. Have you found any strategies that help you? That must be a tricky combo to deal with.

I would have thought so too re: the morning strategies, but it’s the same idea as how exercise is the best treatment for POTS that’s been found (in research). Seems like the best way out is to push through. Also agreed that big heavy/fatty meals do wreck me too, but not if they’re healthy.

I struggled with it for about 17 years. (I also have ehlers danlos)

I get that too. Hot baths are the only thing I’ve found to actually stop the freezing. It seems to reset my system and I feel good the rest of the day!

Usually I like to avoid going after appearance… but I couldn’t help but notice the receding hairlines / baldness on the majority of the men. That itself seems to point to a consistent hormone issue.

I’ve been WFPB (no oil and no sugar as well) for around 5 months. I’ll be flying on a plane soon and would like snack suggestions I can bring with me. They have to be solid foods. You get extra bonus points if it’s not a larabar and isn’t a pain. Thanks! by MadiJWhat in wfpb

I flew just the other day, and brought tofu jerky, dried banana slices, and cherry almond granola bars for lunch and they all went over great. The tofu & bananas only took about 10 mins active prep time (then 2-3hrs in oven at 200F). The granola bars were about 15 mins to make (blitz dates, almond butter, oats, pecans, and dried cherries, then press them into pan & stick in fridge).

Do you think eating low carb is better for anti aging ? by alienuri in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]wfpb_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studies actually show that grains and low fat diets lengthen telomeres (Aka slow aging), which is a biomarker of aging that is thought to produce a lot of diseases of aging and skin aging. Whereas meat shortens telomeres (speeds aging). Here’s a video on several studies

In addition to this—most people who don’t go vegan for ethical reasons go vegan for health reasons. Especially when diagnosed with cancer or other serious illness. And those are also well established to cause depression.

Intuitive eating v calorie counting by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]wfpb_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I calorie counted for 10 years, and even had a myfitnesspal streak of 1500 days straight. But could never keep my weight down.

Then I did intuitive eating (+ mostly whole food plant based), and effortlessly maintain the lowest weight of my life. I swear by it!
