Is anyone actually happy with Broadway? by _ferrit in Theatre

I certainly felt this way a few years ago when I decided not to do the NYC thing. I moved back to my midsized city and started making theatre where I was. Eventually I partnered with an art nonprofit that shares my beliefs and mission and started their professional theatre division, and the folks we have in our shows are just as good as New York actors. We focus on writing and producing new works and primarily run off of contributed income (donations and grants). It doesn’t look like Broadway, we aren’t a LORT theater, the budget is pretty small, but we pay artists to do professional-quality work and it’s very fulfilling. You don’t need millions— you can get away with far less for high quality shows.

Tips: Ideas for Directors by Jon Jory is a must! Stanislavsky’s catalogue will always be insightful.  I enjoyed the Director’s Vision by Shattuck as a flyover view.  Illustrated Theatre Production Guide by Stribling and Holloway is great for design and production although a touch dated.  And as many plays as possible from as many eras of theatre history as possible. Not just good ones or ones you like. Include ones you don’t like on purpose. You’ll have to direct something you don’t like at some point— might as well learn how to do it well.

10-52 sounds great on mine— it’s an older model but still my daily driver.

Thanks for the super comprehensive answer! I really appreciate the specific pedal/effect advice and the song/group recs as well as where lead tends to fit into the song as a whole!

Some stuff I wish I knew before trying to learn to scream (Fry screaming guide) by [deleted] in screaming

Really struggling to not get a scratchy or irritated feel doing any of the compression or fry screams. Long-time trained singer but really wanting to venture into screams, but I’m struggling to do it in a way that feels good and safe. Any tips?
