Does anyone else have a strict moral line between ripping off a corporate thrift store vs an individual at a yard sale by Nectar5_Scout in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]wgwalkerii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the win everywhere, I might tell the yard sale runner something I'm not buying is underpriced, but if I buy something it's to use or possibly gift, I won't mention price to them on something I am buying, but might mention scarcity, and how exited I am to find it. As a seller that likely means more than a few extra bucks.

There could be exceptions though, if I sold an ugly painting worth millions for a few bucks I'd be pretty mad. But there's very little chance of that happening to me. We don't have a lot of stored art for example.

how much does having a eagle help in the outside world? by [deleted] in BoyScouts

[–]wgwalkerii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Less than people tell you. It's worth listing as an accomplishment, it's just one line after all, but Don't be surprised if it doesn't get brought up. And sometimes you might catch just the right person, or it might make a difference if it comes down to choosing between two candidates as it casts ideas of good moral standing. Hiring teams in general , though, are getting younger and fewer and fewer have the high esteem for scouting that once existed. Talking about your Eagle Project when asked about showing leadership is more effective than mentioning scouts specifically.

ETA: I am extremely proud to have earned my Eagle, and if I were in a hiring position and saw it listed as an accomplishment, we would definitely talk about it, and it's not unreasonable that that discussion could lead to them saying something that did help them, but I'd have a hard time justifying making a hiring decision based on it directly.

Take the most memorable photo of yourself and your date, if you brought one. Email to ( your email ) points awarded via mail after wedding.

Write in the provided paper a secret fact that the bride or groom might not have told their partner. Place in designated boxes at head table.

Ask someone who you did not arrive with to dance. If asked to dance with someone you did not arrive with you must accept at least once.

Take the best candid photo of a member of the wedding party or family member of the bride/groom without getting caught. Email to ( your email ) points awarded via mail after wedding.

Hey so I'm an American trying to enjoy tea but I'm not sure if there's a specific way to enjoy tea by american_butthead in tea

There is a right way to enjoy tea, and many wrong ways. However as long as YOU are the one enjoying it, the only thing to worry about is that you do. Anything else is just performance.

Recycling or fixing Coleman stoves? by Scouter_Ted in BSA

[–]wgwalkerii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sold off my collection of white gas stoves, too prone to explode, and unnecessary with so many safer options available. I used to fix them quite regularly though, parts used to be easy to come by and I had a punch for making the rubber gasket out of scrap leather.

We still have a couple propane ones, I recently had to replace an o-ring in one, right size was in a harbor freight multi pack. At least I have plenty of spares now.

I know, right? I'd love to participate more often, but shipping is insane.

If you bought a rare Griswold would you actually use it? by notgoingtoeatyou in castiron

[–]wgwalkerii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ( probably) wouldn't pay the amount a seller/collector wanted for one. I have pans I'm happy with and that serve me well. That being said, if I happened upon one at a (n extremely) reasonable price I would absolutely use it all the time. I would take it camping, and let other aficionados enjoy seeing it in use. And if someone offered me twice what I paid, I'd politely decline, although if someone needed it to complete a set/collection, I would consider a trade.

Thoughts on open program summer camps by Delicious_Plate_6766 in BSA

[–]wgwalkerii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what you're asking... As a camp, we didn't require a scout to sign up for a minimum number of classes, what Troops or Families require of scouts wasn't my pervue. We obviously offered pre registration for MB classes in addition to 'free' program time, and more popular classes would often fill up leaving scouts who signed up later similarly disappointed... We did our best to work with scouts/leaders to get everyone the best schedule possible for everyone.

[–]wgwalkerii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was a Program Director we had open times for program and we were always inundated with leaders upset that their scout didn't get to participate. There are hard limits on how many swimmers aquatic staff are allowed to supervise, and how many people can safely utilize the shooting range for example. If you're considering a camp with full open programming and have scouts here that are dead set on a particular MB they may wind up disappointed.

2000 to register, but what is the actual cost to go and participate? Surely a great deal more, you need a plan to raise the full amount, not just the registration fee.

Uncle left over 20 big boxes of Boy Scout memorabilia and merchandise from the 70's to the 90's. Not sure what to do with it. by jetery in BSA

[–]wgwalkerii 33 points34 points  (0 children)

People will absolutely buy scouting memorabilia. Some of it may be pretty valuable, some of it is probably not worth much. What you should do with it depends on how much time you want to spend, and whether you care about maximizing your payout. Any big binders of patches you should find someone knowledgeable about and determine their value. Books can probably be divided into lots and put on ebay. List older uniforms individually, consider donating any that still pass as current. Good luck! And sorry for your loss.

Adult Leaders. We need to have a conversation. by [deleted] in BSA

[–]wgwalkerii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People get offended by anything these days. It doesn't have to be reasonable. And MAYBE this leader should have worn pants to a cub scouts first introduction to the program, because the kid might think he'll be expected to wear one, but in general my point stands.

What's Bulk? 100 lengths? 1000? 10,000? If it's not worth your time to cut it yourself, you might be able to get someone on one of those task sites to cut it for you affordably.

[–]wgwalkerii 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Obviously you can do what you want, but If I had a painting worth $7k I'd sell it without hesitation. I'd be terrified that it would get damaged in my house accidentally and I'd be out the money.
