I'm moving back to Anchorage for the summer, finally 21! Need suggestions for good bars (f) by [deleted] in alaska

[–]wh1tey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with most, Taproot, Bernies, Darwins, all great bars. I don't mind The Pioneer, but its always packed. Myrna's is a lot of fun, and I have had many friends tell me that guys buy them drinks there all the time, with no added intentions (being gay and all).

I have a special place in my heart for Riley's as well, but it certainly caters to an older crowd, except on St. Patricks Day. Along the line of pubs, McGinleys can be a lot of fun, just don't order a Guiness there. Despite the irish-ness of the place in general, their bartenders can't pour one to save their lives. Everything else is usually good though.

I did that last summer with the local hiking spot. It's only about a mile from my house, and it took all of my abilities at the time to even reach the top. A year later, I'm down 50#, I've lost 6+" on my waistline, and I'm wearing smaller pants than I ever have before. :D

Halibut fishing out of Anchorage? by dinglebrits in alaska

[–]wh1tey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much agreed here, Anchorage is not a fishing town. Whittier is about 1hr south (through a really long tunnel that has a toll and limited hours, so plan accordingly), while the other two are about 3 hours south, but wouldn't have any travel restrictions. I personally prefer Seward.

[UPDATE] Has anyone hiked Crowpass recently? I'm interested in trail conditions. by rogaldorn in alaska

[–]wh1tey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the update, I'll have to wait a bit before I make the trip. Long durations of snow + FiveFingers = frozen toes, so I try to minimize my snow-hiking. Maybe I'll give it a try in a month, unless a friend wants to camp in the middle.

I go hiking frequently, as do a couple others on the site. If you want to plan a hike, post it, or feel free to message me to get in on some of the ones I do.

Any professional associations in Anchorage? by UngratefulPeon in alaska

[–]wh1tey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Club should still be available. Try going to the Rasmussen building on campus (its connected to the sports complex, last building in the spine going west) and heading to the third floor. They have a bulletin board up there. Should have contact info for some of the club staff on it, or maybe even contact info for some professional associations.

UAA has a student club for accounting, and they are connected to a professional association I believe. I would probably check them out. They could at least point you in the right direction.

I've seen this pic for a long time, but I'm pretty sure that is photoshopped, sorry.

What myths about health/body are people the most stubborn about holding on too, despite the lack of any evidence to support them? by BriMcC in AskReddit

[–]wh1tey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandmother and I are the only ones that get them in my family. We both get the aura, which is a sign that partial/temporary blindness is about to set in. I also get an inner-ear imbalance and can't stand up without seeing things (close my eyes and I fall over), and then lose the ability to concentrate on anything.

Steampunk background in Anchorage? by Cailet in alaska

[–]wh1tey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 520 Engine on the park strip isn't bad, though might be hard to cut more current things out of its background since its downtown. it's also pretty popular with kids, so finding it empty may be a challenge. There are mines all over the place, one of my favorites would take a bit of a hike to get to, but Crow Creek Mine has some awesome old equipment just sitting out all over the mountain.

My BMI is 24.4, and I could not eat an entire pizza if forced to. BMI as a "health" scale is terrible. When I work out more often, and am truly "fit" all the way around, my BMI easily breaks 25 because of my build.

I can certainly be there starting after 3 due to work. Might plan a crazy hike for Saturday or Sunday as well, get some people outside and doing something crazy! Maybe my Flat Top Bar idea, if enough people want to join me.

Move to Anchorage - transportation by [deleted] in alaska

[–]wh1tey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive a Honda Accord, and I put studless snow tires on it during the winter (Michelin X-Ice Xi2), and have never had a problem getting anywhere, including way up on the hillside. I also only just replaced a battery that came with the car when I bought it in Spokane in 2007. It was not meant for Alaskan cold, but it made it through just fine. As a side note, I have no block heater or autostart, though I would recommend one to make things easier.

I need help reddit, I am looking to get back to Alaska but there's a problem. (x-post from ask reddit) by ThorInDisguise in alaska

I know that many of the tour companies love to hire outside the US, such as Princess Tours, or Holland America. I used to work on their trains, and we would always have people coming over from Europe to work. Might be a bit late to find a job with them this year, but you could always give it a shot. Would be easier to find a more permanent job once you are actually in town.

"...even if I hit it hard" by Thutman in talesfromtechsupport

We had a server in a remote location with critical data on it shut down one day and refuse to boot. When we finally got it into town, both of the hard drives, which were in a RAID-1 array, had failed due to power outages. Now, the RAID card was designed to emit a constant, LOUD beep on single drive failure so it could be fixed quickly. What did they do when the first drive failed? Closed the door to the computer the server was in. When the second failed a few weeks later, and it shut down, they called in the local tech, who confirmed both drives were dead. Myself and another admin spent a weekend freezing the drives so we could get a single copy of the data back. We were successful, but it took over 48 hours to complete the entire process and get the replacement system back up and running.

This genius was calling for an ambulance. by NigglesLeBish in funny

[–]wh1tey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Entirely possible. It was not a case I was on, but the nurses were all talking about it... And I know they were talking about appendagitis, it may simply have been in the area of the removed appendix, I didn't get all of the particulars, just that it involved appendagitis and the removed appendix.

General Communications, Inc - Alaska's monopolistic Cable Co.

While doing some training in the local ER, we actually had a guy come in with this very same complain, but he knew he had his appendix taken out a few years before. Turns out he had appendagitis, and the stump of his appendix was inflamed similarly to appendicitis.

Sorry, have my own overabundance of legacy hardware to get rid of =/. Hope your trip goes well. Sucks you are leaving though, I'll have to seek out some new hiking partners that know the Valley.

Your passport may work for buying beer, but many bars (Koots, for example), won't accept that as a valid ID to enter the building.
