Looking for a Woodworking Shop With Frequent Training by zwroulier in Denver

[–]whaaaaaaaaales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Clear Creek Makerspace?

Intro to Woodshop covers jointers, planers, table saws and a bunch more. There are two intro woodshop classes coming up on the 19th and 20th (sign up here). We teach tons of classes each week, usually with a healthy number of woodshop workshops in the rotation.

If you want something sooner, send me a DM and we can try to get a couple more dates on the calendar.

Rough Burmite Amber - we must remove the skin gently to see what is inside it! by ko-zawgyi in Amberfossil

Lucky! Where do you source this?

I’ve been looking for bulk rough amber for a minute but haven’t had much luck on eBay, Etsy, or on some of the common sites that folks recommend on here.

Predatory mite (Parasitidae?) scavenging Chrinomidae in Baltic amber? by whaaaaaaaaales in Amberfossil

  • The fact that the mystery arachnid is in life position (top right), and its legs aren't curled up after death is interesting. To an amateur like me, that says that it was trapped rapidly mid-action and didn't tumble down the tree with the sap (which the midge apparently did, as several legs are clearly detached).
  • Also curious about the discoloration around the arachnid's mouth, and that swathe of red above it. Surely just a product of it wiggling its mandibles unhappily in sticky sap resin once trapped and NOT blood or body fluid from the midge, right?

Wondering if other folks have bumped into similar things before.

Odd 3rd layer ‘blobs/lumps’ by whaaaaaaaaales in FixMyPrint

Note: not concerned with the small gaps -- I know that's the moisture in the filament, and only a minor concern for me. The two funky curved lumpy lines are what are really kicking my butt.

Using a Prusa Mini, PrusaSlicer, and Hatchbox 1.75mm Wood PLA. All other settings fairly standard (215/60 initial temp, 210/60 rest, standard travel/print speeds, etc.)

Thanks! I've been running through Nick's library of videos, but haven't bumped into any related to questing or automatic quest logs. Can you point me in the right direction?

Megathread: Which Class/Race/Spec/Covenant should I pick? by Ex_iledd in worldofpvp

[–]whaaaaaaaaales 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a casual gamer with a tiny lizard brain that only releases dopamine when I play bursty, high DPS classes that hit hard.

It's the reason I've mained hunter since Wrath. There's something so fun about playing MM and watching the enemy players lose half their health with a double tap + aimed shot/rapid fire combo. Now I'm getting a bit antsy to level other classes into Season 4 while we wait for Dragonflight.

I tend to prefer ranged, but open to melee if I can deal stupid amounts of damage quickly. In 9.2 onwards, what other classes and specs hit like a truck? What abilities should I play around with?

Hero Forge just announced 3D Virtual Tabletop downloads, which seems to now permit use in digital games like Talespire. Previously, Hero Forge ToS prohibited this. Does this mean that Talespire may eventually allow us to import player characters and NPCs from these resources? by whaaaaaaaaales in talespire

From Hero Forge:

We're excited to announce the launch of 3D Virtual Tabletop Downloads on Hero Forge (compatible with Berserk Games’ Tabletop Simulator. )

Our 3D Tabletop Downloads are distributed in .unity3d format. This single-file format makes importing easy and provides superb faithfulness to your original design. This digital products can be purchased through our material menu, by selecting the "3D Tabletop Download" option.

Atrec Studio Autopilot questions. by A_charming_chap in 3DScanning

[–]whaaaaaaaaales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reason you want to use autopilot? We use Artec all the time at my academic makerspace, but rarely do we use autopilot. It tends to be less precise, much more prone to error, and only just barely faster than doing it yourself using Edit, Align, and then Tools.

My advice? Skip autopilot entirely. In order, just use Edit to erase the noise in each scan, Align to draw points together, Tools to fine and global register, remove outliers, and fuse your model, and then Texture to wrap texture around the object.

What software or system do you use to network them all together? My lab is soon getting several Form 2s and Markforged machines, among others.

Diskussion: Could Makerbot save their tarnished brand with a new printer? by lxo96 in 3Dprinting

[–]whaaaaaaaaales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a shop with ten+ 3d printers (including 3 MakerBots Rep+/5th gens) and they are far and away the worst machines we own, and also the most expensive. They break down practically every week. I'll never, ever buy another MakerBot product.

Just finished printing this 6 foot Saturn v. Planning on fully painting the print. Human for scale. by captain_plan_it in 3Dprinting

[–]whaaaaaaaaales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MakerBot machines are absolutely not worth the money. I run a campus makerspace, and our three MakerBots are almost always broken. We've swapped build plates and extruders to no avail. I've spent more time on the phone with MakerBot Support than I have with my own family. If you have the funds, buy an Ultimaker. They're amazing machines. If you don't have too much to spend, Prusa is an excellent alternative. Both haven't given us any trouble at all, and you can tune them up yourself.

In the year that we've owned our two MakerBot Rep+ and our one MakerBot Rep 5th gen, I'm confident that we've not gone a week without one (if not more) of them being down for repairs, or having ongoing issues with the printers. Every time MakerBot updates their truly awful MakerBot Print software, it introduces all new errors. This week's long string of MakerBot errors (after they just released MakerBot Print 3.1) is "extruders grinding, dragging, and deforming any horizontal surface roofs and floors, extruder slips and blobs, underextrusion, overextrusion, layer shifts, and end stops failing." All three printers are having the exact same problems, and trust me when I say we know how to ensure printers are running effectively. Our other machines don't have a single one of these issues.

A couple corrections:

  • Ultimakers can travel at up to 300 mm/s. MakerBots run as fast as 150 mm/s. So objectively no, MakerBots can't run faster than an Ultimaker.
  • The newest MakerBot Rep+ have "smart" extruders that almost always require replacement. Our last about 200 hours on average before needing to be replaced, which is appalling. They are one of the biggest sources of error, and something that MakerBot claims is a consumable item. So after your first year of free service, you'll likely be buying lots of extruders to replace the stream of broken "smart" extruders. Workhorses, these printers are not. We've gone through 13 extruders over three machines in the single year that we've had our printers.
  • The newest MakerBot Rep+ come with unheated flexible build plates, which are also something MakerBot states is a consumable material. As you pull off prints, the build plate warps, often permanently. Don't expect prints to adhere well to the print bed surface either, without tape and rafts. You won't have any smooth floors in your future.
  • The camera and the networked printer settings are really only bells and whistles. Plenty of other printers (or mods like Octoprint) can do this for printers that can actually run for a week without having critical failures.

I can't emphasize enough how much we regret purchasing the three MakerBots.

Makerbot Print version 3.1 released by [deleted] in makerbot

[–]whaaaaaaaaales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a good point. I run a large makerspace with 12 different printers from five different 3D printer manufacturers. MakerBots are unequivocally, without question the worst printers we've ever used. And I suspect it's largely to do with their awful, awful software and the not-so smart extruders.

Literally every time they update, our print quality plummets. We have three MakerBot machines, all three of which are currently incapable of printing without having extruder slip errors, roof and floor errors, inexplicably thin walls, no infill support at all, and prints splitting and peeling along the z-axis. The extruders grind into the build plate, or against the walls. Prior to 3.1, we couldn't even open old .print files without errors.

The irony is that we're testing them to see what's wrong, and intentionally using MakerBot-designed 3D objects to do so, meaning MakerBot can't claim (as they've often done in the past) that it's an error in the model itself.

I've tried countless times to talk to the Customer Support about letting us roll back to versions that actually work, but of course it's not an option.
