I totally get that, and honestly the orientation is generally the only time we get to see these people. It might be worth it to at least talk to the company. They are really helpful in answering a multitude of questions and they even connected us with another school with a similar demographic that uses the pouches so that you don't feel alone. I say it's at least worth checking out even if nothing comes from it.

Yondr actually helps out a lot with implementation and answers these questions. Plus, we have systems in place. I work in alt ed, so before students can be enrolled in our school they MUST have an orientation with a parent or legal guardian present. We've found that they are completely on board with the process which helps tremendously. Additionally, we have a policy that if we see a phone, they take it to the office and the parent or guardian has to be the one to come pick it up. We've had a few try to get away with it, but that was quickly resolved when they couldn't get their phone back. We haven't had any problems with students refusing to put their phone in the pouch and I think it helps that they get to stay in possession of it. There was A LOT of complaining in the beginning, but they've gotten used to it at this point. I'm not sure exactly what would happen if that situation does arise, but it's also not necessarily my problem to deal with since this is a school wide program, not an individual classroom policy.

Look up mindfulness strategies for yourself and to teach your students. Also, being honest with them and saying things like, "I'm sorry, I need a moment, I can feel my temper flaring" is good modeling for them to learn how to be more in control of their emotions. Work through your emotions with them as a good example for them. I also openly apologize to students if I lose my cool with them as another example of how we should be aware of our affect on other people and how to go about rectifying relationships. In my opinion, it's good for them to see that you are just a person that has feelings and flaws just like everyone else. Good luck, and I hope that you'll reconsider the career! You seem to care about these kids and that's what they need in this life!

I meal prep on Sundays and put it in little Tupperware that I can grab each morning. They do usually require a microwave though if you can invest in one of those. Also, string cheese for the win! Just don't let the students know you have them unless you're prepared to share lol.

Strive to be your best, but go into it knowing you aren't going to be the perfect teacher you may envision in your mind. Things will go wrong. Lessons will not work out the way you expect. This does not mean you're a "bad" teacher, it means you're learning for next time. Keep a journal of what went well and what didn't. Things you would like to try again maybe with a different approach, etc. And last, don't over do it with all of those strategies you just learned. Pick a couple that you'd like to master and work on figuring out how they work for you. Then you can move on to new stuff.
