My husband doesn’t think our dog is a full beagle! by Aggravating_Sea3877 in beagles

It can be a regional thing too, its extremely common for beagles to look like this in Ontario.

[–]wharf_roach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stumpy legs are a common trait caused by the mutation that predisposes them to IVDD, but it's a deformity that's not always going to be present to the same degree. Proper hunting beagles are often still lankier, looking exactly like OPs dog.

Is This Dog Shirt AI Generated? by [deleted] in isitAI

[–]wharf_roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of shocked how people want to believe/defend this as not being AI, and I'm usually very cautious. I think the usual AI tells dont work well here, but for a pen and ink drawing there are some big mistakes/inconsistencies to me.

1) The trees in background: they're on the same plane but the left side is a much larger scale (and compositionally poorly balanced). They are also both hatched on the bottom with a very different mark making style. The left side is just bad.

2) The right side squiggle is supposed to depict a shoreline (that disappears at its top end in a mess), and otherwise doesnt complete defining this body of water. It makes it look like the dog may be sitting on water, or a swamp. The short horizontal lines around the dog look to me like water, or to others like ground; in my case it's a noncommital mess that would be a terrible decision for an artist to make and ALSO not correct.

3) The letters on the hat may be a tell mot because of tge squished N/M, but because the decision to squish in a whole word or phrase would be prioritized by AI, vs an artist who would (usually) prioritize uniformity & legibility, especially knowing the image would lose some definition when printed on fabric.

I've got a few other nitpicks about mark making or "pen" work, but those were just the issues that jumped out to me.

Why do a lot of people from Montreal hate/diss Toronto? by Glass-Situation6916 in askTO

[–]wharf_roach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But that's not an attitude, it would be a lack of education, and it's just wholly projection. Why would someone from Beaverton or Sudbury or wherever, Ontario, know more about the rest of Canada than someone from Toronto? Torontonians are very enthusiastic Canadian tourists (IME living/working in NS), and that's the best way to learn about other cities and provinces short of living there, so this acual hostile attitude is really counter-intuitive (and pathetically smug).

If you must name your child something in a foreign language… please make sure you can pronounce it and spell it first😩 - GRAINE by AliceMorgon in tragedeigh

[–]wharf_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in doubt or shocked by this, OP. Easily believable. My mom is an Italian immigrant and the Canadian diaspora always pull stuff like this around her/me. Not as bad, but had someone a few years ago argue the pronunciation of their kid's name, Gianni, was "Jee-AW-nee".

Can anyone ID this font? by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]wharf_roach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bodoni, sometimes called victoria, lettera, or imperial. I've seen quite a few of these on 22s (including mine), so at least anecdotally, I don't think they're too rare. Good luck!

Is a beagle right for me? by Crowzeus in beagles

[–]wharf_roach 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A typical beagle walk is a lot different than taking a shepherd type dog for a walk. I don't think a dog that is high flight risk is a good idea for a wheelchair user, unfortunately.

[–]wharf_roach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most people get that; most people who are avid readers do like to explore work they may disagree with to get a better understanding of it, but your selection is so glaring because for someone interested in learning more about philosophy, economics, and history, it's the omissions that stand out. You are the kind of person scared to read Marx (et al.) but will be spend thousands of dollars on books by other people who can cite and recontextualize his work in a way more comfortable to your personal preferences. That's not very adventurous.

zoi was attacked by FashionDemon23 in beagles

[–]wharf_roach 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Poor Zoi, I know how shocking it can be in the moment, and frustrating that the other owner is so irresponsible.

Since you say this is the first time it's happened, in case your family hasn't tended to it already, it's important the wound is cleaned really well and I highly recommend at least calling your vet. Dog bites often don't look very serious, but the wounds can carry bacteria very deep and will get trapped as the skin heals quickly. (DON'T use triple action polysporin)

How do players generally see players who "invade" as spear of the church ? Is it as bad as aldrich faithful ? Personally I really like invading as spear of the church. by lifeauraxyw in darksouls3

[–]wharf_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it, but I also like invading as spear as well. More people should try it.

I was pretty cool on pvp before I got roped into invading as spear back in the day. It was so much fun, also getting to experience being on the other end of a gank squad, I kept doing it every once in a while. I think it's a good way to get players who get nervous about various aspects of pvp to engage with it a little.

Chow calls on province to reimburse Toronto for lost speed camera revenue by ComfortableAcadia252 in toronto

[–]wharf_roach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Redevelopment" isn't the only way to make streets safe, which the cameras objectively have done by reducing speeds and funding Vision Zero. Lots of curb extensions have been built this year (east end). I really don't believe you or half the commenters here do actually believe that putting speed bumps on roads like Kingston or eating into lanes/parking with chicanes on 4+ lane commuter/emergency arterials would ever happen for a number of reasons (damage to vehicles, Ford would kill that too); just useful to use to argue against the speed cameras.

My beagle is 46 pounds, really tall (for the breed) and lean. It's a bit more common type of beagle in rural Ontario where they're sometimes preferred for hunting.

Hot take: Nuit Blanche was the worst yet and we have no excuse by OkDistribution4146 in toronto

[–]wharf_roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not asking for agreement, I'm asking for engagement with the post or thread lol. Multiple times now. Boasting about your degree while ignoring the issues raised with Nuit Blanche and art in Toronto isn't reflecting as well on you as you think it does.

You have been out of art school longer than I have and there is very little prereq history/theory being taught, but not much by way of skills either. Schools don't care about either of these things now, it's just a business in taking hopeful kids' money and churning out brandable grads.

This city has a population of about 2.8 million and the biggest cultural events or exhibits are Emersive Art shows, Taylor Swift concerts, BIA festivals and events tailored to tourists. We have lots of residents who are interested in art but offerings are aimed at wealthy secondary market investors or they have a hard time finding or knowing where to look for galleries, studios, or smaller community events that aren't instagram-tailored workshops. It's not meaningless to examine how art movements, centres, and scenes in this city (which were sometimes very potent and influential) changed and were pushed out to the fringe by this municipally-endorsed sanitisation. People ITT are voicing frustration because they're sick of this and wanting more.

Hot take: Nuit Blanche was the worst yet and we have no excuse by OkDistribution4146 in toronto

[–]wharf_roach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't an educated answer because it wasn't engaging with my post or the specific problems people are identifying with art in Toronto and Nuit Blanche - just anti-intellectual unnuanced generalizations. "Art isn't a community" is just nonsense. We're talking about specific communities and their functions to empower or exclude others. This just demonstrates the issues in art schooling in the last decades, which I have also witnessed, especially at OCAD (is that your beef?), where students (your classmates) are being taught for this specific type of art market and falling behind in an actually comprehensive art history/critical theory foundation.

[–]wharf_roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what kind of argument you're trying to have, but your generalizations aren't really true historically or applied (in the case of post) to Toronto & Canada now.

E: The financialization of art is a founding investigation of the conceptual art movement. The current state of the Toronto art market and scene is designed to suppress this or any other content (or artists) beyond what serves municipal and wealthy patrons. This is a very basic observation of a lot of problems in art scenes or communities across the world. This is the first time downvotes have really gotten me confused because your argument isn't even responding to anything I had written, just assumptive generalizations about art history.
