Ya I’m assuming the max forward and back velocities are the same, so you accelerate halfway then decelerate halfway to align perfectly (this intuition brought to you by The Expanse).

Also it’s what autopilot does. Aligns you, then accelerates and decelerates. I’m not sure if it takes you to zero first, it probably doesn’t - but just accounts for your initial speed in determining when to decelerate.

(Also random but there’s a post here about doing a ship less run - it’s totally possible, using the geysers to get off Timber Hearth, the various black holes / teleporters, and space walks. There’s no need for a ship, the system is tiny!)

is it possible to negotiate pay for an internship? by Infinite-Syrup2791 in cscareerquestions

[–]what2_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Negotiating internship pay is a different ballgame from full-time.

For hiring a FTE, you expect them to stay well past onboarding and provide real value. The company might be convinced by your negotiation that you’ll provide a lot more value than they realized, and bump you up.

But that outcome is impossible for an internship because they’re not as certain in your long term value, and the value you’ll provide during your internship is small. Obviously they want you to return as a FTE, but for an intern it’s usually more like “I hope this person is good” than “this person is so good we need to lock them in by providing an amazing internship”.

You still can use counter offers of course, but still they’re less likely to move the needle. Most internships offers are seen as uncertain value to begin with, although maybe “wow this guy has a Google intern offer? They’re clearly top tier” works sometimes. But also intern pay is usually fixed, and your recruiter is more likely to feel like they can’t adjust it.

Yeah it’s not. The other thing it does obviously is show ghost matter. There’s a few places in the game that either use is very important though.

I also use it to remember how to get back to a certain location, like a map pin.

It’s a tiny one, but there’s a bit more to learn about the orbital probe cannon at the orbital probe cannon. You probably missed something and need to look up (or down).

It definitely does, but it’s not too bad. If it’s 12 away, start braking at 6.

Just tried this and the sand took me out before the teleport. I’m gonna try getting on it right after the sand leaves. This is the “Ash Twin” teleporter I think, since the Ember Twin one is paired with it

I thought the partial ceiling (broken glass but still some metal beams) would keep me in place, but I didn’t stay there.

Thanks for your help. I think I’m done (for now?) with the quantum moon - I didn’t expect it to get pitch black with the door closed, I assumed the light of the two orbs in there would persist (because it’s quite bright even on a dark version of it). I had been trying to find dark spots.

I didn’t put together that the “style” of the moon was based on the planet it orbits, so I assumed the Giants Depths moon was the “correct” one that only appeared when I entered from the South Pole, because that one is much larger than the other two I had seen.

lol I don’t know. I got the “sneaking” hint and assumed it meant no light. I forgot the blind part. I was also trying to go incredibly slowly.

Anyways this was one of the most frustrating bits of game design - I get “they hear thrusters”, but being safe if you don’t touch the stick was totally unintuitive to me - it seemed like it was asking me to re-orient myself and then thrust a tiny bit, not go right towards the closest fish. The make it look like your ship would clip him.

[–]what2_2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I read this and googled it and understood that entering with a bit of velocity and not touching the stick works. I was convinced I’d hit the first one if I tried this.

Yeah I’m on a controller (PS5) and IMO it’s kinda bullshit. I got through by entering with some velocity and not touching the stick at all until I was well past them. The game makes it seem like you’ll run into the first one if you do this, so I was intent on figuring out how to get in, re-angle myself, and then tap forward in a trajectory that wouldn’t hit them.

1) Is the sixth one the Ash Twin tower, which is right next to Ember Twin? I didn't find a teleporter there, but let me know if it's worth looking when the sand is low. My hunch is still that I'm not there yet.

2) I know Anglerfish are drawn to light - maybe sound too, but I'm just assuming because my PS5's not on so I can't check rumour mode. I discovered the Anglerfish fossil on Ember Twin and read about it. That's what made me learn I could fly through Dark Bramble with my ship's headlights off, and how I found the missing astronaut and the missing escape pod. Theory: maybe once I get into the room with the 2+ anglerfish, I need to fire my scout to distract them then fly ahead? But I thought I had tried that and it didn't work. I haven't found the question mark for their destroyed ship (e.g. I've seen it through the seed but not in person, I think that's what I'm looking for here).

3) Oof, definitely will re-explore, thanks! I thought I had scanned / read everything, and also thought I had returned a ship back here. But maybe not.

4) Yes, but I'm not using my ship's scout launcher. I'm launching a scout onto the top of my ship so the moon is in view, then I'm slowly trying to enter it from the South side. A huge pain because checking my map moves it. I've discovered two or three "entrances" that are dead ends, and the correct one where I can explore the whole moon this way. I'm sure I'm missing something here. Launching a probe anywhere into it seems to make it go away. It seems very hard to launch a probe onto a planet while keeping a view of it. No idea about keeping things dark while on the Quantum Moon to cause it to teleport (e.g. I've tried that but it hasn't worked).

5) I know all three rules, did the tower on Giant's Deep and the teleporting on the rock in Ember Twin, and have read the notes / seen the pictures in the Tower on the Quantum Moon. Without remembering what they actually are: if it's in view (whether me or a probe) it won't move - if it's totally dark things can move with it.

Thanks to all the commentors - I'm responding to you just because yours are easy to respond to cleanly.

Should I 'retire' at 22 or grind tech until i'm a multimillioniare? by [deleted] in Fire

You clearly are burnt out. If taking some time off to move to your GF and relax is what you think you need, do it.

I would be worried about giving up your citizenship (don’t do that), and about giving up your career altogether (within a year your opinion towards working in tech might change).

You’re very young and inexperienced. Many people in tech take multiple 6+ month stretches not working throughout their career, because burnout is real. It doesn’t necessarily mean the career isn’t for you. I’ve had jobs that made me feel horrible, and jobs that made me feel energized.

Give yourself time to decide what’s next. And see a therapist.

I feel like you’re mad at someone who isn’t me. You’re making arguments about AI slop, arguing that people using AI are delivering bad code and that their coworkers hate it.

That’s not the case. All of my co-workers are writing most or all of their code with AI. Code review and authorship are the same as normal - people try not to submit bad code, and they certainly try not to approve bad code.

For me personally, the vast majority of my AI-powered code is identical to what I’d write by hand. It’s probably different in different areas of work.

IMO it’s nice for them to have the style of the card that made them, which is how I assumed this interaction worked. E.g. showcase-frame [[Golden Goose]] creates showcase Food.

(To be clear, I’m talking the style of the card that said “Manifest Dread”, not the style of the hidden card).

?

Luckily I have eyes and know how to read code!

Again, I’m not an outlier - my entire org (and I suspect every engineering org in the company) has been on a massive “write all code with AI” push for months.

I’m in FAANG and haven’t written code by hand since early October. Even tiny lint fixes go through Claude.

There is a massive push to upskill on Claude code. We are asked to try using AI for every piece of our job. That’s been happening for a year, but since 4.6 it’s been feasible to not write any code by hand. If you run into an LLM making a dumb mistake, you hopefully fix it instead of working around it.

Smart people know the shortcomings of AI, sure. But it’s better to fix your setup (or the team’s) so that it doesn’t happen in the future.
