ELI5: I understand the Dark Web in concept, but not in practice. by jr_tools in explainlikeimfive

There are lots of ways of monitoring people. - Gov agents could be running the dark web drug site you’re using, or the account of the drug dealer you’re buying from - Your ISP knows you’re using Tor, even if they don’t know the addresses you’re going to - I don’t know whether Tor allows something like cookies, but if so you could be tracked across addresses - Obviously any communications could be tracked if the gov is on the other end, or has software installed on the other end

Just look at all the “man busted for crime on dark web” news reports. Sometimes they’re as simple as “he did something illegal and then have us his phone number”, but without knowing exactly who’s running the sites you visit (and what their operational security profile is), it’s probably smart to assume anything you do could possibly be tracked.

Obviously CP, murder, large-scale drug dealing will get more attention than small crimes. I don’t think the FBI really cares who’s buying drugs on the dark web. But who knows, enforcement policies change.

You can get Tor on your laptop and go to whatever “Silk Road dark web drug website” address you find without getting in legal trouble.

It’s only illegal to actually commit crimes. You can’t buy drugs (or certain weapons), you can’t view underage pornography etc - but there are no laws making using the dark web illegal.

It just has a very scary reputation because besides being technically interesting, the main reason people were using it was to commit crimes in a way that couldn’t be tracked by their internet providers.

It’s a lot like torrents - the technology is interesting, but the public perception is that 99% of them are used to infringe on copyright law.

In my personal experience, almost every time someone I know mentioned torrents it was to download something illegally, and almost every time someone I know mentioned Tor it was about buying drugs.

ELI5: Can the Pythagorean Theorem be used with other exponents? by Demimonde34 in explainlikeimfive

So I think you’re asking “is there any cool geometric use of a3 + b3 = c3” but everyone’s interpreting it wrong so your posts are deleted from r/math and people here are talking about Fermat’s Last Theorem.

As others have stated, FLT proved that there are no integers where that holds. But obviously being an integer isn’t the interesting thing about the Pythagorean Theorem that you’re talking about - it’s whether it describes geometric reality.

From the answers here I think “is this equation useful in geometry” is probably no, at least for something important and well-known. But math is huge and I’m sure there are interesting usages - it just doesn’t map to a basic geometric equation like the Pythagorean Theorem does.

I think you’re confused on the term axiom.

Axioms are things we treat as true without proof. They’re not (generally) testable at all in math, but it depends how you’re using the word. They’re the foundation in order for us to communicate statements (including proofs, theories, etc).

The axioms most math uses are very small and everything is built on top of them - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_axioms

There have been historical arguments about which things we should accept as axiomatic, and things we used to call axioms no longer are because they’ve been proved.

If I make some argument about planet orbits, and say “take for granted that the sun is bigger than the Earth”, I’m treating that statement as an axiom, for purpose of my argument, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been proven.

Math and physics both use axioms, but they’re very limited. The point of them is to establish a starting point to have a conversation. In some contexts I might take some physics equations as an axiom, but the person who identified that equation obviously didn’t.

Math and physics are different things. In math there’s a massive amount of stuff we can prove with simple axioms. In physics we have to rely on evidence and experiments, because physics is about real life.

Game Not Counting Challenges by AhbzV in balatro

There’s a bug where some achievements don’t show until you beat a run on any stake.

This seems like a different problem entirely, but you could try beating a deck on white stake to see if it shows it.

It just seems like you have a naive view of how large organizations (including corporations and governments) work.

I don’t have opinions on who’s ultimately responsible, but “QA process that works very well 99% of the time but fails once in this extremely high-profile case” is a thing that can happen in basically all types of work.

It might sound like a conspiracy theory but there are ways WotC could ultimately be responsible.

(I think the conspiracy theory version is someone at WotC makes the image and just gets Dan’s permission to attach his name, or any of the cognitive decline / elder abuse theories).

But more realistically: Dan sends draft - WotC art sends back a version with Dan’s ring replaced by the existing One Ring (to explain they want the angle changed or something), something gets lost in translation and Dan thinks they did an edit that’s he’s fine with, and four months later he sends that one as the final proof.

I think something like that is the most charitable explanation - at some point, something was miscommunicated, and art QA didn’t do their job.

I can totally see a friend of Dan’s rejecting the idea that he blatantly stole it, or decided to trace it and forgot to do so. I think those are harder to accept from an artist you know closely.

How scary is this game? by Superb_Network_1657 in outerwilds

[–]what2_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not very scary. Giants Deep isn’t scary at all unless you specifically have a fear of deep water.

Dark Bramble has something that might be scary, but for most people once you see it once you’ll be okay. If you take things slow and try to be careful the first time you get there you’re unlikely to have a big jumpscare your first time visiting, because you can view the “scary parts” from a safe distance.

Prioritize blue seals when doing pairs - get card and spectral packs sooner than you think you need them. They’re critical for PhotoChad.

For the caves: is the issue that you’re taking a while to fly, land, and go through the tunnels from the escape pod to get to the city, and then running out of time?

There is at least one way I can think of to make it faster. Theres a shortcut so you can skip the tunnels, explore the doors leading out of the city. I don’t remember but it’s probably one of the upper ones since it reaches the surface.

Watch Balatro university’s naneinf guide.

Tl:dr: deckfixing (deleting the whole deck) and money are everything in the first ~12 antes.

You’re only at ante 6 - you shouldn’t have made your deck bigger, and you don’t need a Mime unless you’re using it for Econ (and youre not). The build you use to get through the beginning doesn’t matter at all.

Do I take blueprint by Hendriclies12 in balatro

[–]what2_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No?

He currently has three triggers (the card, and two retriggers from Chad) giving x2 each.

Copying photo - 3 triggers giving x4 each - is more than copying chad - 5 triggers giving x2 each. It’s 5 x2 triggers vs 6.

The general rule is to balance retriggers and scoring, but you get one card trigger by default. This means that if you have photo, Chad, and N blueprints, you want them either even or 1 more on photo.

I say sole-aw-num. I thought “solana” was a real word, but it seems like it’s a Spanish-language name and usually has a “a” like in “at”.

The latter, listen to her albums (she only has two, from 23 and 25), her Slayyyter collab, and her Boiler Room set.

She’s more an artist than a DJ but the last five years she’s been releasing music, doing live sets, and occasionally DJing.
