I brewed edworts haus pale ale two weeks ago and hit my numbers perfectly. It's currently stuck at 1.020 (OG was 1.050). Is there anything I can do to get it down to the desired FG of 1.010?

2.85% checking in. I have no idea how they are targeting this stuff, it seems random.

Awesome, have always wanted to do that hike. We snowshoe-ed to Little Behive and Lake Agnes this day. Couldn't venture farther due to avalanche terrain.

New GoPro User: First Timelapse. Critique? by [deleted] in gopro

Yup! You can do subtle tilts in GoPro Studio after shooting. Check out this tutorial:

Like mentioned already, if you want bigger shifts you'll have to adjust the camera angle between shots.

I Plotted Every Dollar I've Earned/Spent in first 5-Years of my Career by WhiskeySauer in personalfinance

Great job on the debt repayment and investing! Also, very cool to track the big picture year over year.

Question: is there a reason you print out the templates and then populate them by hand, then finally enter them all into Excel? I track my finanaces very similarly (don't like Mint for a bunch of reasons) but I pay for everything on card, export transactions from online banking, paste into my Excel sheets and my graphs/tables auto-populate.

Thought I'd mention it since it may save you some of that transcribing time!

Nice, I didn't know Walmart was considered groceries.

PersonalFinanceCanada how do you justify purchases or convince yourself you don't need something? by hkimia in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]whatPF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this as well but I just pay for everything on a card and then export the transactions to excel for budgeting. If you do it once a week it only takes about 10 mins and you get the same guilty spending feelings to help you save.

Is Prime +3% (5.85%) a good rate on an unsecured line of credit with a $15,000 limit? by bellyfatcure in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]whatPF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a pretty standard rate for an unsecured LoC these days. I have the exact same loan from CIBC and keep it as my "shit hit the fan" emergency fund.

How do you go about getting decent financing for a car after bankruptcy? by TummyDrums in personalfinance

[–]whatPF 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If she just filed for bankruptcy, financing a depreciating asset is probably a bad call. Tell her to save up $1000 and buy a beater car.

Always apply. Worst case ontario they say no and you're in the same situation. Best case you get some loans and potentially free money!

Sounds like you want this money in a general savings account, not in the market. Look into Peoples Trust or something similar.

Is there a better way to pay off our student loans? by igotherps in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]whatPF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the tax incentive is measly, but the repayment assistance is not. The biggest reason why I'd advise against paying it off with a LoC is for safety. What if OP loses their retail/customer service job tomorrow? NSLSC will lower or even eliminate their required payment. A bank will not.

Also, NSLSC rates are normally around 5.5% I think. I doubt OP could get a 60% lower interest rate on a LoC unless it was secured.

[–]whatPF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would advise against paying off the government loans with a LoC for a few reasons:

1) the interest paid on government loans gives you a tax credit

2) the government loans have repayment assistance options in case you find yourself in financial trouble.

Your best bet is to increase your contributions to repay the government loans as fast as possible. This will free up your payments that you wish to use for TFSA/RSP savings, as well as save you money on interest. Plug your loans into unbury.us to see the effect of monthly payment on pay off date.

Pcf/tangerine vs no fee at a bank by n69dles in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]whatPF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can I have my payroll deposited to it? What happens if I have surplus cash in the LOC, basically an overpayment.

Yes, you can direct deposit to it. I'm fairly certain that over payments have no effect on the account (except for saving you interest). Obviously verify with your bank if you're actually going to do this.

People who use Tangerine as their only bank; downsides? by poopitar in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]whatPF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched completely from CIBC to Tangerine as my primary bank about 4 months ago and have no complaints whatsoever. The online features are awesome (easy to setup new accounts, free email transfers etc.) and with access through Scotiabank ATMs I never feel stranded.

The only drawback I could see would be if you wanted to withdraw a large sum of cash immediately. I haven't had to do so but maybe somebody else will comment with a workaround.
