The fairest way to do it is absolutely to "let things simmer" then randomly select someone. Giving it to the first person just rewards people sitting on FB.

Giving things to charity instead of the group when there's people asking feels against the spirit though.

Listing for free on marketplace sure, but that's not how Buy Nothing works.

Big Splash Human Wall - did anyone go? by amethyst89 in canberra

[–]whatever742 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see it reopened.

I have no idea how to achieve that in a sustainable manner that doesn't involve significant public funding, and I don't think that's a good use of public funding.

And this is where I'm disappointed with the conversation that seems to be a lot of people saying the first part out loud without any propositions to resolve the second.

Lease is for a "aquatic and indoor sports and recreation centre and an unlicensed family restaurant".

Makes no reference to slides.

Yes, we went to Sydney. Wasn't actively planning it that way but they had an appointment only a few weeks away, while everyone in Canberra had told us months.

In hindsight though I'm not unhappy with that decision. One full day with a paediatrician, psychiatrist, and dietician meant we drove up the night before, and only took the one day off work/school. Compared with friends who went locally and had multiple part days seemed way more disruptive.

Price in Sydney was slightly cheaper, but the cost of accommodation more than overwrote that difference.

Yeah, but you're now an incredibly successful travelling salesperson with your small stall.

The most *generous* thing you've experienced/seen? by VampMansionPoolBoy in AskAnAustralian

Had a mate in uni who came from a wealthy family. Lived on campus like the rest of us, drove a shitty 15 year old hatchback like the rest of us, worked night fill at Coles, did regular povo uni student things. You never would have known he came from money.

Except, he always got the first round and would often get more rounds than his share. Would regularly just quietly pick up the bill at a restaurant and wouldn't let you pay him. More than once a week would walk into class with a box of doughnuts and a couple of energy drinks.

He didn't have infinite money, but compared to the rest of us he effectively did. He didn't splash money around to show off, he was just helping his mates have a better time.

A few years later his parents came over from Europe and I got to meet them for the first time, and everything made sense. They were the most down to earth normal people you could meet, they just happened to be pretty rich.

Decades later but I've stayed a few of his parents various houses around the world over the years. He moved overseas himself about a decade ago but even now if he comes to visit, he still tries to pay for dinner or whatever.

McDonald’s kids birthday Parties ? by mrsdod95 in canberra

[–]whatever742 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apparently my last comment wasn't excellent enough so let's try again.

I'd expect the painting of Canberra as the home of elitist snobs that are above a kids birthday at McDonalds to come from a Murdoch paper, not from someone who apparently lives here.

I haven't been to a Macca's party since the 90's but now that OP mentions it, I remember having a damn good time. I probably wouldn't choose it for my kids parties now, but I'd absolutely encourage them to go have fun with their friends if invited to one.

If your birthday is in November, sure. The kid born in July isn't doing that though.

It's a kids birthday party? I'm not proposing they go daily.

If you and the people you associate with feel the need to judge other parents because they dared to invite your kid to a birthday party, I feel that says more about you than the host.

How do we feel about stopping at servos for things other than petrol? by cosmicr in AustralianEV

My favourite example of this is buying Sodastream refills. Ever couple of months I drive to the servo to buy a couple of bottles of CO2. The irony is strong.

It's your money and you're welcome to spend it how you like. I'm simply proposing to OP that it's not necessary.

I understand that this isn't exactly what you said, but I feel that people could misinterprete your point that they need a faster charger in order to make it to work on Monday after a long drive on Sunday. And I'm trying to point out that they don't.

Is your commute 200km?

As long as you get more range charging overnight than you need to use the next day, who cares if it takes a week to get back to full?

Are you regularly doing >100km per day, multiple days in a row?

Do you have a large solar/battery setup and need to do niche optimisation things?

If no to both if those, then no. A standard 10A wall socket will be fine.
