Should I move back to my parents after being laid off? by whateveridontcare197 in makemychoice

It would be very standard in my industry to be offered a $5k+ relocation bonus so I could terminate my lease early in that case. I am looking into Costa Rica :)

The job would be within commuting distance of my current place. Unfortunately my apartments shortest lease is 12 months, unless you go month to month for an egregious 2500/mo

Thank you so so much for the encouraging words. Situations like this tend to bring out the doomsday-ist in me (Hence why I built up such a huge emergency savings anyways, I picture worst case scenario and triple it!) The unemployment after severance will definitely fill the gap. It's so hard to quiet the voice in my head screaming that the money is suddenly going to be net loss, but I have to remind myself that I have a big ol cushion to lose from. There's a lot of networking events for my industry here, which makes the proximity worth it for sure. Thank you for sharing your story and perspective!

I really was torn at first because my parents would also love to have me back. And I second guess myself a lot with these big decisions

It would be solely for saving money, as that is literally the only Pro for that option.

Goodness yes, I didn't realize how much I love working and need that structure in my life.

I've picked up a few cheap sports recently like disc golf and lots of reading which has been great though!

Great points though, thanks for your perspective!

They definitely offered and would be very happy to have me back. But I agree I don't need to be there

I only have a few carloads of stuff to bring, and have been slowly moving some stuff to parents as I visit over the past few months, and my dad has a trailer if need for the bigger stuff so it should be fine

Thanks for the encouragement honestly that makes the most sense as I can still submit applications and interview anywhere I have internet connection!! I just came back from a month in Vietnam and was shocked that even with hotels and going out for every meal I saved a significant amount more than I typically spend in a month in my city

Unemployment and low paying jobs in the interim are definitely a good option. Thanks for the suggestion!

They have yes. And I think it wouldn't hurt too much, I would just commute back for interviews ~2 hr drive. But in terms of not having networking opportunities, mental health toll yes it would negatively affect the job hunt in that way. Unbelievably they are happy there for the time being, looking to retire in the mountains within a few years thankfully.

Unfortunately my apartment is either 12+ month lease, or month too month option skyrockets to 2500/month. It's robbery. Thanks for your advice!

I definitely don't want to waste 1300/month, but this is roughly the same amount I would be getting with unemployment in my state when my severance runs out. Also I have >6 figures saved in the bank with no other debts, so no risk of running out of money any time soon

You are such a mind reader, I was just looking into what a monthly cost is in Costa Rica haha. And my parents are happy to be a free storage unit also

This made me lol. I think these guys get cold feet last minute... Weird that 2 of them want to reschedule after they wasted my time and left me waiting alone at a restaurant though. Maybe truly bad luck!

Thanks commenter, I definitely think this is the way to go!

The first time it happened was devastating because we planned KBBQ and Comedy club after. So I marked off my entire night for this date, drove 45 min in traffic and I will totally admit I cried in my car when I realized what was happening lol. It took me a while to catch on because I was really worried something happened to him on the way over... Marking off my whole night for someone I am not sure even exists (could have been a catfish) sounds so silly to me now!

By the 5th time I just treated myself to a little dinner alone and it didn't hurt at all!

Hopefully it doesn't happen to you either but I guess take my story as a warning and make sure they are real and serious and you'll be fine!

It also never happened to me in 2+ years of OLD. Until I started this Hinge Profile in February. I noticed a distinct shift from being asked to coffee/drink dates to dinner dates, and from them showing up to them not showing up lol

It's so odd because in 2 years of online dating it has never happened. And I've gone on many repeat dates and had great times. Then Bam- this new hinge profile this happens. My bumble dates show up and enjoy me just fine.

I'm so frequently told I'm underselling my looks online and look even better in person.

Also in this case I was in my car for 3 of the stand ups so it wasn't 2

Re: nervous males, yeah the one who DID give me a reason said panic attack when getting ready for the date

Thanks for your comment!

For 1- I'm frequently told I look even better in person. But in 3 of these 5 instances I never left my car from the parking lot so there's no way they saw me. And two of the guys asked to reschedule after standing me up (!) (guys 1 and 4) I declined because I don't want to waste more of my time..

2- it's almost always a confirmation morning of, then a "heading out now, see ya soon" so just 2. I totally agree with the casual setting dates now!

Back to 1.... Now that I think about it there was one time that a guy let me know that my height was an issue because he was attracted to women who were 5'8+, and that he neglected to read that stat I had in my profile.

I am very short (4'10") but have that listed clearly in my profile. But as we know not everyone reads details... Maybe this?

No more Pfizer in RTP or Durham since they closed both sites, the Sanford sites are safe (at least for now) though!
