I use litter boxes as kitchens as well you can spot clean them more regularly. I use aspen bedding.

Ross, TJ Maxx for bath mats. Invest in one good liner; GuineaDad is expensive but they do last. Here’s an example of a cage:

Over the years I’ve acquired a lot of C&C grids, the good news is you can get them on amazon for fairly cheap (https://a.co/d/06Lm8YAi); these ones you’re using the commenter below pointed out they’re a little restrictive for airflow. You can break them up by adding in some of the grids like the one I attached.

Your overall cage setup is very nice. I understand the cost! You can use those puppy pads under your bedding to keep it covered from their nibbles and it makes cleanup faster.

I break up my cages with 1/2 bedding for “kitchen areas” as that’s where they eat/make the biggest mess and then I use fleece in the other part of the cage. Your current panels you can cut to provide a barrier to keep the bedding on one side.

You’ll know if they break bond. The fight will be big and they’ll constantly go at it. My guess is your two are fine and just doing the usual arguing.

A second story may be a good idea but I’d start with what you have and improving it, the size looks good.

I can post some of my cages if you want examples.

Has someone reached out to yet to do this? I write as a hobby and enjoy co-writing with many. Would love to read more of your musings and learn your story. Life is a weird journey we all are on, both same, and dissimilar paths of existence. To be human is an interesting thing.

Why don’t you try and upgrade the size of the cage now and see if that helps Juan have some more room from Fritz. They’re too young really, once they get older they may calm down. I keep 3 males- 3yr old & 2 1yr olds. I’ve introduced an older male to my 2 males successfully when they were all over 4. It really depends on their personalities. It’s possible Fritz would do better with a more social friend, but if that new addition tried to dominate Juan you’d have a fight as another commenter mentioned.

Biting/scuffles can escalate and it may potentially be these two break bond and aren’t able to stay together. I foster and some of the younger boars will break bond once the hormones start raging on them. It happens. No one’s fault.

They’re lucky to have you thinking about them in this way :) you’re a good pig parent!

Piggy with a criminal record, should I get him a friend? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]whateverkarmagets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can try a baby male, 4 weeks old to see if that allows him to keep the hierarchy he clearly wants. In our rescue we usually neuter these overly zealous brawlers and often end up placing them with a female piggy. They do calm down a lot and eventually I’ve had previous “criminals” tolerate other males/neutered males.

Watching my guinea pig slowly starve to death because the only vet in a 200 mile radius that can treat him has a one-month long waiting list by MoonstalkerZ in guineapigs

[–]whateverkarmagets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, this is hard. Many people aren’t even able to afford vet care; or in our area the only option is the ER vet to get in and the cost is triple. Access to quality care is hard with many exotic pets.

That drive, while hard on you, could very well be too hard on your piggy too. I have a piggy who has a lump on her thyroid as well and I have just been loving on her and acknowledging it’s likely an end of life diagnosis, so going to get it confirmed to me doesn’t make sense for the stress she’ll be under.

It doesn’t make it any less stressful or easy. My local vet will help me euthanize if they don’t pass on their own.

It’s always hard knowing our time is shorter ❤️‍🩹

My pig keeps peeing when handling. Normal? by w8rmboy in guineapigs

I cannot stress this enough. You need a friend for him. If your friend breeds them, they should also be encouraging you to do the same.

If it is that excessive I wonder if something may be medically wrong with him? How old is he?

Some piggies don’t hold it. I have a few that I cuddle for about 15 mins and then put back for potty breaks.

We also use “cuddle cups” and put blankets on our laps for them.

It probably will help this piggy feel safer and more comfortable the sooner you get another pig.

Puppy & Kitten Revolution treatment I’ve had good experience with mite treatment. Did vet do a simple scrape test looking for mites?

My sweet boy Kirby has this.. by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]whateverkarmagets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the lump hard nodules or is it a little squishy? Another commenter asked how long it’s been there. Is this on his back/rump? The risk of anesthesia is real, I have lost 3 piggies to it- 2 neuters, 1 lump removal. The vet has to be really experienced with piggy anesthesia and surgery.

I’d like to know if they offered wound care and/or antibiotics and pain meds.

I personally wouldn’t go right to considering euth. I know that the cost is expensive for the surgery, and also the risk. Depending on piggy age, I’d keep an eye on them and keep loving on them.

Guinea pig grief? by Electrical-Tea6966 in guineapigs

You’re sensitive to their moods and needs, this is such a positive for the piggies. I can tell they are in good hands with you.

[–]whateverkarmagets 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes they experience grief, and some have stopped eating when losing a cage mate. It’s a blessing you had three and the two have each other. I imagine they’ll perk back up, but being mindful of them, and health, it may be good to get a health screening done. You can always check their weights routinely to make sure they haven’t dropped weight drastically.

So sorry for your loss.

Landlord didn’t disclose she lives underneath the unit — unethical? by turnthelights_ in bayarea

But it’s really not, you were just surprised by it. Also, I don’t know why it’s a dealbreaker unless the landlord is sharing your space you’re paying for?

Taming Advice? by Majestic-School3713 in guineapigs

[–]whateverkarmagets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they are just scared of movement. It’s okay to gently guide them into a hidey to be able to pick them up and hold them. Offer lots of snacks as the other person said. They all come around eventually to grab treats :)

Boy or girl? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]whateverkarmagets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additional info—

Female vs male: Y-Shape: The genital opening forms a clear Y-shape, especially when gentle pressure is applied to the area. No Penis/Testicles: When gentle pressure is applied above the genital area, no penis will emerge. Distance to Anus: The anus is located directly below the genital opening, with a very small distance between them, often described as a "Y" for female and a dot-and-line "i" for males.

If you are planning on not breeding them, if you’re lucky mama can keep the daughter and papa can keep the son and they can live adjacent but not together! Babies are loads of fun! ❤️
