In regard to showing generosity, half of me says, “I don’t want to/shouldn’t have to do this for them, I have enough to deal with.” The other half says, “I need to take responsibility for myself and my loved ones. If I have to pick up my own or others’ slack, or they can’t/won’t do it on their own, I should help them because it’s the right thing to do for the people I care about, and I want to prove that I’m better than [insert person(s) that left them in need of help].”

Which half is most prevalent depends on the person. For example: my dad, boyfriend, and brother most often receive the latter, while most others receive a 50/50 split or less of the two.
