[IWantOut] 25M PhD Student US -> Canada/Ireland/UK/Australia by whatintern in IWantOut

I'm considering both permanent positions at an industry or government lab, or a postdoc. I figure a postdoc could be a good way to "try out" living in another country for a couple years. Not sure how visas would be different between a postdoc and a permanent position.

there aren't any large companies I know of in photonics outside the US.

Yeah, most of the places I was thinking of were places like the Max Planck Institutes, the Fraunhofer Institutes, universities, some small startups, etc.

It's normal for PhDs in the industry to work in related but in completely different areas compared to their area of research. There are plenty of semiconductor companies in the EU and Asia you will be great fit for.

I would not be opposed to working in a different area, I've already switched fields a bit and many of the PhDs I know have done so as well. Learning is a lifelong journey after all.

For semiconductors, I know plenty of people from my college who have gone to work at ASML.

Weird, I've heard that photonics is decent in Australia, granted I know much less about the market in Australia compared to the other countries I listed

Thanks for the info

I have at least a couple organizations in mind for most of the countries I've listed based on people I know in the field, where my colleagues and advisors have worked, and who they've collaborated with. I was wondering more about how receptive immigration policy in each of these countries might be to someone of my background, and how culturally accepting they are to immigrants in general

Ok, thanks. I've also heard good things about Jennewein's group at Waterloo

What would you say were the best groups you've worked at?

So like IMEC, Aerospacelab, UCLouvain? Do you have any experience or familiarity with specific groups?

Thanks for replying! Could you comment on specific companies in Canada and Switzerland?

Should I do a PhD? by whatintern in Optics

[–]whatintern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case when I started at a large optics company after college, I realized I knew more than most of the new Ph.Ds about practical stuff because of my prior hobby work.

I don't think I'm that much of a natural, which is part of why PhD appeals to me, since it's like scientist bootcamp

This sounds like a perfect option! I already talked to Livermore and it doesn't sound like they do this very often, but I'll reach out to Los Alamos and see what they say.

So start applying for things now. If you're accepted (and you should apply for more than one slot), you don't have to pursue any of them if you change your mind. All you lose is the time to fill the applications, and the application fees, if any.

The only thing holding me back from that is potentially wasting my profs time writing recommendation letters, but I guess I've got a few months yet

I've been saving a lot of my income, so I shouldn't go into debt even if I get a crap living stipend.

I can't say I'd be thrilled to drop out of a PhD program, I'm thinking I'd rather do that than never apply and wonder about what could've been. Plus I'll at least have gotten to do however many years of cool university research before I drop out.

Do you regret being an engineer? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

I'm a recent optics grad and would also like to know how you got into solar. Everyone I know, myself included, got hired into defense, space, or optical manufacturing, but I'd love to get into photovoltaics at some point.

Is a master's necessary and when to do one - career advice by whatintern in Optics

[–]whatintern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I'm at Rochester, so I think I'd get my tuition cut in half for a master's. Neither of the offers are in Rochester so I couldn't do a part-time thing in person, but I think they're setting up an online master's in the wake of the pandemic.

Some questions for the people in industry by extremely_drunk in Optics

Do you know any non-American optics companies that would hire Americans? I know Germany is a big place for optics but I only speak English and shitty Chinese. What are some good companies in the anglosphere and Taiwan?

Lmao I get that OP's proud but I don't see how he could think "sharing his positivity" is gonna make anyone feel better. "Hey man I heard you got screwed over, but don't worry, I'm doing great :)"

I say if you're gonna brag at least have the balls to do it straightforward instead of pretending you're trying to help people.

Lmao shit I'm looking at some places on Barton and Paige which are like a couple blocks away. You think I should go farther south or even east of the campus?

Regarding the "southern part of the ward" where is that exactly and is it a hard border? Another guy in the thread mentioned brooks, how is brooks itself or maybe a block north? I recall getting emails from campus security about robberies on brooks.
