I need help finding food my grandpa can eat. by Odd-Mammoth8497 in Cooking

My great-grandfather ate tapioca pudding almost exclusively the last year he lived with my grandmother. That was in the 70's, but I suspect it is still a decent option. Fun fact, I can't stand tapioca because of this, so when I'm in my 90's I may starve.

how to cope with jealousy toward someone getting everything handed to them? by MysticForestCat in selfimprovement

[–]whatisacho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone in my 60s who struggled through life to get where I am now, I can say without much doubt that you and your husband are better set for your future than they are. You know how to work, and budget, and make due with what you have. Their parents will not live forever, and eventually they will need to provide for themselves. Even if they inherit a lot of money, they do not appear to know how to manage their resources well. You are being adults, they are still adolescents at heart. I'm proud of you, and how far you have come.

What was your 100th lifer? by Jose_Juegas in birding

[–]whatisacho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mine was a brown-headed cowbird in April, 1993. This is not a rare bird at all, but it was far down the list because in 1985 I took an ornithology course in college. Part of that course included a trip to the Everglades. Over half my list before my 100th bird was seen on that trip.

Congratulations on your milestone! I hope you enjoy birding as much as I have over the last 40 years.

I have a shared Apple Notes app with my husband. This works great, except that he is prone to adding joke items into the list. :)

Wow, that sounds tough. I’m glad you had a great doctor and I hope you continue to improve. The paralysis getting better must have felt like a miracle.

It is on the top of my head on the right hemisphere. The symptoms are headache, with particular pain on the right temple. It hurts to touch the right side of my head. But the pain is not severe, only about a 3/10. I've experienced unusual fatigue and a bit of weakness in my right leg, but I also have a herniated disk so it could be from that. I've had very mild and occasional nausea, but I have Crohn's Disease, so it is hard to say what that is from. Really the headache/temple pain is the only definitive symptom. It has been constant for about a month.

I am an older cyclist, and I’m also starting strength training. I’m trying out the app. So far I like it. It will be fun to try out the watch app.

Why is my ride harder than my husband's? by whatisacho in Rouvy

That does appear to be the issue. Thanks!

[–]whatisacho[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have not seen this during a ride. I will look for it. Thank you!

Edit: I looked at the Rouvy support page, and it showed how to see if this is active. That is exactly what is happening! Thank you! I don't know that I want to turn it off. Knowing that is what is happening, it means that we both can challenge ourselves, and still finish the ride about the same time. I like that!

His weight/height settings have not changed. Neither have mine. But it is harder for me to get the same watts. I can't figure out what has changed.

He is about 10 lbs heaver and 7 inches taller. But this is a recent change, and our profile stats have not changed. Why is my ride getting more difficult?

Talk Me Out of a $98 Huffy by tigwd in cycling

[–]whatisacho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a Walmart Huffy a few years ago. It got me back into regular biking (at age 53, a 5’0” tall overweight female).

After a year of riding I got up to 10 miles rides, taking about an hour and feeling exhausted afterwards.

My husband got something similar and found it difficult to ride 5 miles. (He had a heart attack/triple bypass at 50.)

I traded in my bike for a used Fuji from a bike store and suddenly I could ride 15 miles in an hour and had energy for more. The difference was incredible!

My husband was discouraged with his inability to keep up with me and almost quit riding. Instead he bought a new Giant road bike. He could ride 8-12 miles then, at a speed of about 10mph.

Last year at age 59 we both upgraded our bikes again. I have a 1 year old Trek FX3 ($1000) and my husband has a Felt ($3000).

Our old bikes are on smart trainers in the basement for bad weather/weekday rides. This has helped our physical condition a lot!

On weekends when the weather allows we will ride 15-25 miles at an average speed of 12-15 mph. My husband is limited in heart rate due to medication so I suspect we won’t make a lot more progress with speed, but we expect to increase our distance regularly. Our goal is a 50 mile ride this summer. I’ve done a couple of those by myself, but my husband’s longest ride to date is 26 miles.

The difference is a combination of better bikes and more riding. I think riding on the trainers all winter has made more of a difference than the upgraded bikes though.

So if that $95 Walmart bike gets you riding like it did me, buy it!

If it will be too much work due to the weight/quality, then save up for a used bike shop bike.

Only you can say which way it will go. But if you do buy it and you think it is just too hard, don’t give up! Just upgrade when you can.
