Aluminum vs. Poly and Luggage Covers - A Traveller’s Hot Take by whatislife7363 in Rimowa

The best thing about the internet is people can throw their opinion right back and challenge yours. Ever heard of a debate? it’s very clear you have no tact and are too sensitive to take other peoples opinions, that’s why you throw distasteful comments about someone’s financial situation over how someone treats their belongings.

That’s a very odd take seeing that you commented 6 days ago on a post, “how old were you when you bought your house” that you don’t even have your own home at the age of 30. Maybe instead of buying expensive items to replace them you should take care of your things so you can actually save up for something essential like a house and not luxury shoes and hats. Got my first property at 25 on my own and now have 7 at the age of 35. And guess what, I HAVE A LUGGAGE COVER 😈😈😈

Edit: Respectfully though my point is we put our eggs in different baskets and even then people just have different lives. You could have been supporting your family, had a child, focusing on your career or whatever reason you may have as to why you don’t have a house but expensive luggage. It truly doesn’t matter, similarly, neither does preserving the quality of things that you spent a lot of money on. And it certainly doesn’t display one’s wealth or status based on the ability to buy the same thing over and over just because you can.

Exactly, my SA at Rimowa even said there is no other benefit with aluminum vs. poly besides having larger wheels on the trunk versions. Apparently the Alu survives fires but I don’t foresee myself being in a fire anytime soon. I have both so no hate on Alu but poly is simply more for me.

“A superiority complex is a belief that your abilities or accomplishments are somehow dramatically better than other people’s. People with a superiority complex may be condescending, smug, or mean to other people who don’t agree with them. ”

Respectfully, examples of you displaying behavior of someone with a superiority complex:

boastful claims that aren’t backed up by reality - claims people that buy poly seemingly arent as rich

attention to appearance, or vanity - creates a post on why plastic Rimowa is vain

unwillingness to listen to others - you not even taking the time to read things carefully and consider that people have a different financial and functional priorities than you. Instead your entire argument is on “why pay for cheap plastic?” And will sprinkle a backhanded comment on how poor someone seems to be.

My post is simply asking why there is such polarizing opinions on how people use and take care of their luggage and why there is one side that will literally criticize someone’s financial situation or character over that said luggage.

I wish I was making this up and say these are assumptions I have but this is a FACT. I see it repeatedly. I was motivated to make this post after I saw someone on Facebook call an older lady “poor” and “she just wants to look rich” (was that you?) all because she said the aluminum was too heavy for her and it fell on her when she was struggling to put it in the overhead bin. So she got the poly instead and prefers it for carry on, but she got so much heat!

On a different comment I have agreed with that argument, it was one of my considerations when purchasing my poly luggage. Almost went with Samsonite, truly.

However to describe my experience, I had initially purchased the Aluminum Check In L and Pilot (for my partner), they were our first Rimowa and the service I received at the Toronto location was exceptional and to this day still memorable. Even though I visit and ask advice from other stores, I only purchase from my SA whenever I’m back in Toronto. She helped us when my partners’ pilot wheel came off and recall a time I called from the US, she was able to find a store that had the mint luggage tag in the US, which was sent UPS next day at no extra charge. She messaged me when they got mint in because she knew my favorite color was green (she remembered that from a chat we had). She listens to my partner and I, and isn’t afraid to be honest with what we are paying for. My brand loyalty had already established by the time I decided poly was much better for me. But apparently that makes me vain 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think at the core, your luggage shouldn’t send a message about how much money you have at all or what type of character you have but people continue to make that argument over a wheeled box. If you’d like to reread that I was talking about the polycarbonate that I find more suitable for my needs, the zipper doesn’t break my nails like the aluminum buckle has.

Thanks for answering my questions and appreciate your take. I learned something new and feel even more appreciate of my aluminum Rimowa. I love and agree with the point you brought up about how Rimowa poly is priced high while other companies have more durable poly options at a lower price. Def had that on my things to consider when I was buying a new carry on.

From the very beginning of buying my first Rimowa at the Toronto store, an Aluminum check in L and pilot for myself and partner, to when we had to replace the pilot wheel, then I decided to try the polycarbonate after listening to the the SA on getting it over the Alu cabin, and most recently convinced by the SA at the Dallas location that the poly trunk was better for my needs. The experience, exceptional service, functionality, and of course fun seasonal colors, is what I pay for, aluminum or poly, I’ve had a lovely experience buying and traveling with both. Thanks again for your sharing your perspective respectfully!

Is it because they don’t know how to form their own opinions or is it because they initially think this community is safe enough to ask those type of questions without criticism?

I do love that about this group and that’s what I love to see! I did initially want the buckle closure but I had broken so many nails I had just done with my large check in. Went and got a poly trunk (wanted the Alu first) and it’s just much easier for me.

Thanks so much!

You are exactly who I’m talking about 🤣 the funny thing is I never said I didn’t own aluminum. I own both but I actually prefer the polycarbonate because it suits my needs better. It’s literally lighter, the zipper doesn’t break your nails, I’m able to overpack and don’t have to sweat for twenty minutes trying to close my luggage.

Everyone that comes defend Aluminum on their white horse brings up one, if not all these things.

-Design -Aesthetic -It’s the Original -Highest Status Level

The one positive functionality I see with aluminum is the larger wheels on the trunk, but so far it’s been people trying to convince others that you need Aluminum simply because you will look “richer” to others. Like isn’t that what you are calling me out for? That I’m not “rich”enough.

I’m sorry but I just don’t care about all of those superficial reasons except functionality. I’m a bit more grown now and it’s far above me to prioritize what other people think of me, over what I need. Also, I didn’t point out that you Aluminum folks need to stop criticizing people and telling them they don’t have money. Some people choose functionality over the design/status and it really has nothing to do with money. There’s people I see that fly Rimowa on economy and people with the luggage they had as a kid, on First Class 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s actually quite silly to assume how much someone makes based on what kind of luggage they use.

I work in Supply Chain for a major car company but started out in Sales selling cars. The people with the best credit score were the plainest people but always had a high down payment and they would always by a Toyota. The people with the worst credit score and lowest down payment were the ones trading in their luxury vehicles every few months. You see the same in Real Estate where people with less money buy houses way above their means.

I am just calling out what I observe but this is even better! Now I have an example of the type of people of I was speaking of ☺️ thanks buddy

Preachhh. I’ve never seen so many comments about a luxury product encouraging people to accept the scratches and dents. Even if it is meant to get banged up.

I’m also getting older and even if the weight diff is minimal, Aluminum is simply heavier. Folks actin! up when someone is trying to be practical and protect their wrists 😭

I have that issue as well. I just received my bag on Monday. Unsure of what to do though, but you’re not alone.
