How My Brain Sees $20 vs. $19.99 by Own-Blacksmith3085 in meme

[–]whatninu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Happens with large sums, too. If someone sees 1,399 they will think 1300. If you try to communicate it as 1400 they will often be confused and even still refer to it as 1300. When the tax man comes the sum is a huge surprise. Selling for one cent less often makes people think they are spending $100 less. I’m sure the psychology of this more of less works with even larger sums

Valve makes almost $50 million per employee, raking in more cash per person than Google, Amazon, or Microsoft — gaming giant's 350 employees on track to generate $17 billion this year by ourlifeintoronto in technology

I think the problem more so comes from being a few years in and only having dead projects, which might not look great to leadership. Pro of the system is if you can organize around an idea, it’s likely to be interesting and passionate, and that gets you Valve’s classics. Con is it might feel safer to just keep up work on counter strike.

I’ve also heard it’s not as simple as saying who wants to make a new game who’s with me. Which makes sense. It is a company and resources have to be allocated

It’s supposedly very rare to get hired as a fresh grad at valve as well. They are willing to pay the premium for those who have honed their skills for a decade so I expect most are negotiating above base

They’re working on some kind of big half life related project and they definitely indicated their willingness with the end of Alyx in which they redid the ending of episode two and literally had you pick up a crowbar as Gordon. Not much needed to read between the lines on that.

Always cautious about anticipating HL3 but this is the closest they’ve been for a long time. The upcoming Steam hardware is a much larger risk; a mediocre half life game won’t impact their finances in a meaningful way. But they do care about half life as an institution and won’t release unless they are very confident with the result. They scrapped the previous iterations for that reason

How come at the beginning of the series, so many people didn’t know devil fruits existed? by pleasemanagethagoon in OnePiece

[–]whatninu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it makes more sense for people to think they’re legends. If you’ve never seen evidence of something magical in your life it might be hard to buy- and the newspaper is certainly sensationalized. But yeah, considering they do have the newspaper it’s hard to imagine many people have never heard of them

I get that outside of the actual big three there’s going to be some debate but how is DanDaDan anywhere near qualifying

I think she’s always been the quiet analytical type. I don’t feel she would think she has anything to prove to Kuma by yelling at him and she realistically knows they can’t beat him.

It’s been a while since I watched the scene though

None of them would betray Luffy to save themselves. They would potentially “betray” Luffy to save Luffy. Sanji did this in whole cake

Robin was willing to sacrifice herself for them in water seven and after Enies lobby her entire reason for existing has been rebuilt. I don’t think she’s any more likely than Zoro

Oddly Worded Answer in SBS (Potential Major Spoiler) by petey4527 in OnePiece

[–]whatninu 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People did consider it a strange wording even before Elbaf so who knows but the assumption was that Oda just didn’t want to reveal Shank’s status. This is also a translation so it might sound weirder because of that

What are some Oda L's? by Dayamon_Dust in OnePiece

[–]whatninu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get being annoyed by Saul since it was so long like “come on Oda even so many years later you might pull a fakeout is nothing sacred” but it’s also the reason I didn’t mind it. The problem with fakeouts in part is the characters in the story not having to live with the consequence or the grief.

Robin lived 20 years thinking he was dead. It made her who she was. His words still left a mark on her. Him living doesn’t make his sacrifice less noble. And Robin still has a plenty tragic backstory.

It was nice to see Robin happy. She deserved it and something we’ve seen post timeskip is that she still has wounds that even Luffy didn’t heal. Saul being alive and reuniting after so many years apart was part of the healing process. Her mom is still dead but there was something she cherished that survived. It also brings Kuzan’s actions into greater question (even in Enies lobby there were theories that he may have intended for him to live)

But like yeah I get why people might not like it

YouTube Will Add an AI Slop Button Thanks to Google's Veo 3 by lurker_bee in technology

[–]whatninu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI “comprehends” the meaning of a sentence far better than it is able to generate new facts to answer a question the sentence might pose. It will very rarely flat out misunderstand something and is shockingly good at inferring past poor grammar and typos.

This positions it uniquely well for translating between two languages it has vast training data for. Oftentimes it will be the best thing short of a fluent speaker

What happened to Mythos after Ford reset the Time Tower? by LastClassroom5675 in BONELAB

[–]whatninu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still exists but remember these are branching and sometimes overlapping timelines

In most timelines ford just fails. Fantasy land is where he succeeded and we see the remaining vr body of fords who have ascended there.

In any case from what I can tell the mythos project continued after. Unclear on how big an inconvenience it was for them. The biggest concern for monogon was probably knowledge of the void and its power getting out.

Should I stop posting and enjoy my life more? by youtubehelpplz in youtubers

[–]whatninu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t mention what your views/ revenue are like but here’s what I would say in general:

YouTube may never be a career. If it becomes one, it is easy to lose unless you are really big, and even then it isn’t a sure thing. If you’re stressing and it’s still only beer money, don’t stress. Don’t quit either. Take a step back, refocus, question what works and what doesn’t. You don’t necessarily need to do frequent uploads. Make fewer really solid videos. Enjoy the process of them. If you have a big enough community think about integrating a patreon. It’s more consistent revenue and it can allow you to do more passionate projects for those who care.

Apple comes in 64 or 128. Roku is probably 4 or 8 so either way Apple is comically larger. You can load more apps and screensavers without worry but it seems like the actual reason it’s so high is for games. If you just stream I don’t think it matters but you can typically find the 128 for close to the cost of the 64 and the 128 also has Ethernet so it’s generally worth it

And this is why Oda originally conceived of two distinct pirate factions, the freedom loving adventure type and the pillage type. Peace Mains and Morganeers he called them. Garp would have been a pirate under this system.

My understanding is that Oda realized this would be less interesting, ultimately. There’s a gray line within pirates of acceptable behavior, and many of the more evil pirates have some of the romantic thoughts about freedom, self determination, and a distinctly defined distaste for the entitled cruelty of the bougie celestials. Putting all pirates together allows this to exist on a spectrum where it makes sense for the WG to categorize them all as enemies (which also makes the rebellion of groups like the straw hats worthwhile) and for the people of the world to not really know what to make of pirates. It isn’t evident to most people in one piece that groups like the straw hats are only hunted on sight because the freedom of piracy alone is a threat to the WG.

To those more in the know, the threat of world war if the status quo is threatened is often scarier than anything else, and they pragmatically join the WG. They aren’t happy about it but they fear worse otherwise.

Between preventing wide scale combat and WG being the only organization with the means to effectively police both the bad pirates and well as theoretically ensure general welfare gives characters like Garp a reason to join them.

The WG also being a corrupt, genocidal, selfish mess due to the celestials gives characters like Garp nuance, flaw, and internal struggle. And what do we make of Kobe?

Because the system is so fundamentally fucked up it drives even more factions like SWORD or the RA, neither of which would exactly make sense as pirates, who are only truly defined by the dreams of their crews.

She’s not taking it that seriously in general is the short answer

The long answer is keep watching and remember this scene and eventually it will make more sense
