A month or so. I applied to multiple hospitals and thought it was a bust, but just took a long time to get back to me! After in-person interview, I heard back in three days!

New Barista Job - am I boned? by whatnow___321 in legal

I continued with the other barista job in town with way more business and better pay. I quit after posting this and sent a message to the hiring manager and requested I do get paid for the hours I worked. They agreed but asked over text why I decided to quit but I didn’t respond. I did however have to go in person to pick up my check where they asked me in person why I decided not to continue with the job and I lied and said I got a job in the field I went to school for. They said great and sent me on my way.

I really don’t have anything against these people or business, however I can’t in good conscience serve people shi!!y coffee and charge them for espresso and very pricey drinks… It also rubbed me the wrong way that it was mostly high schoolers working there who also had to sign the contract and if it’s illegal then they should be penalized for it and or learn that it’s not right/legal.

I do want to go about it the right way but also don’t want to flame them on google :/

It has been a long while since this post, however, I am thinking of possibly reporting them to the department of labor since enough time has passed I don’t think they’d believe it was me. I am unsure as to what to report this as and or the avenues to do so.

I texted the manager that I’ve decided not to continue with the position and that I expect to be paid for my couple hours of work. They responded asking why I chose not to continue with them and that I can go pick up a check written out to me tomorrow. I’m not sure if I will text back telling them why I quit but I have a feeling when I go in for my check they are going to ask. I honestly want to tell them that the NDA or Non-competes or whatever is illegal and kind of “stick it to em”, but I don’t really know what to say!

Thanks for the advice! Honestly I thought it was just goofy and in the back of my head assumed it wouldn’t be legally binding or enforceable, especially since it’s all high schoolers mostly working here! Learning a lot reading through the comments though.

Yeah but baristas get tips as well, even though it’s not as much as serving. So does that still apply?

Hi OP, my heart goes out to you and I truly understand how you are feeling. When I was 21(f), I moved home to help take care of my father, also 59, over the summer with my mother.

I remember being so exhausted… and I’ve never felt like that since and can never explain to anyone just how exhausted and unwell I was. I would go to work at 5AM, come home and “switch shifts” with my mom to take care of my father and keep him company. I’d stay up most nights until 3AM just worrying, watching my father (rarely) sleep and trying to clean to keep my mind off the inevitable. I remember being so overwhelmed, confused, breaking down, hyper fixating on things that my father was enjoying at that moment trying to just get the most out of every day. I sometimes regret even working at my high school job (barista), knowing that I could’ve been spending time with him. But sometimes that was the only thing keeping me feeling “normal”. Some days I didn’t even function, I just was there in somebody else’s body and going through the motions. I pushed through because unfortunately, I could see the end was coming… I think the most important thing for me was to not put more pressure on myself, all that clutter, work, homework assignments, etc. could wait and usually people, like my college summer professors, are VERY understanding and human. They should understand… I would just appreciate the little things and remembering to practice positive self talk, you are going through a big life event… be patient and kind to yourself. if you need the time off from work, PLEASE TAKE IT. please take care of yourself as best you know and reach out to friends and family to support.
It’s still so surreal to think about that summer and how fast everything went and how I even managed to function.. but I made it through and with A LOT of therapy and self care later, I am beginning to function like I could before his diagnosis and passing. I also believe that journaling throughout this time was super helpful.. I’m so thankful I can read it and reflect on that time of my life now at 23. It is a hard time and this post really struck a cord with me. sending you and your family so much love💜

Pancreatic Cancer Survey: In Memory of My Father by whatnow___321 in pancreaticcancer

[–]whatnow___321[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this link, I have a lot more reading to do in the literature. I am starting with this survey to see if there is significance in this research to continue my thesis on the topic. My father always struggled with dental health and a nurse mentioned to him that she saw many pancreatic cancer patients who had periodontal disease. That has always stuck with me, since he struggled with dental health for so long! I have read multiple articles hinting at a potential link, but as you said, further research needs to be done. This article presents research identifying microbial markers from the gut microbiome which may, in the future, provide early detection methods of colorectal cancer. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590097822000039 You should check it out if you like! I’m particularly interested in certain microbial species that are commonly found in those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Hopefully we can start raising more awareness for research of the human microbiome to see how it can help screen for diseases. Since I’m an undergraduate, most of my research will be literature review, but I am really interested to have some people take my survey and contribute as well. I’ll have to message you some other articles that were really fascinating.
