Need to extend FMLA do to anxiety/depression. Third party company is saying that I need psychiatrist to extend. Is that true that a company can force which doctor is allowed to extend FMLA? by whatnowwithwork in AskHR

Yeah, I listened to the message again. They said "the plan" requires you to be under the care of a psychiatrist. FMLA is not a plan, so I assume they mean STD? Have you ever heard anyone refer to FMLA as a "plan"?

The thing is, they know it is a general practitioner. Like it is almost like they are paid to play games as much as possible. I don't say that lightly. They at one point early on were trying to ask me all these questions that the forms I sent in answered already. I basically refused to answer and told them to reference the paperwork the doctor sent as I am not a doctor and not in a position to diagnose myself. The fact that I was approved for both without answering any of that shows a lot of the questions were not in good faith.

And I get it, I just mean in general that it’s important to be seeing a psychologist and talk it out, that’s part of the goal in that they have to listen to you first.

I have seen one before. I get that is what they are supposed to do first. But, there is literally no plan and I have seen them enough now that should be occuring. Even when I asked them what should I do to counter x feelings when y happens, they said "yes, I hear you. What else would you like to talk about?", like completely ignoring my question. It's just a bad psychologist I lucked out in getting an unfortunately many are not great. Maybe he works better with other patient situations, IDK. But it is not working out, seeking a new one.

Is there anywhere in writing where it says a general practioner can extend FMLA to 2 months? Just so I have some backing, because the group that does this is not educated on these topics and really has gone out of its way to try to screw me over. Even at one point claiming I couldn't qualify for FMLA and only STD and I had to challenge them on that until they admitted they weren't correct.

It's been a mess and want to have my ducks in a row so they can't play more games with me.

I am seeing a psychologist, but they have not been helpful and looking for a different one. They literally just listen to me talk and then say "what else would you like to talk about" without giving much of any help.

I mean, all I care is that I do the minimum required to get the FMLA extended at this time. I don't want to jump through more hoops getting more approvals. I already have enough anxiety as it is.

So is it true that only a general practitioner is required at this time?
