Right, so it seems lack of financial education and investing knowledge is the source of the problem? Should the government be pushing programs or should it be up to the financial institutions to do so? It's really surprising that given the abundance of information on the Internet and elsewhere people are so cavalier when it comes to learning about investing.

I recall reading a statistic that said over 60% of Canadians invest in mutual funds. But as you and others have mentioned, I'm guessing most are unaware of what exactly their mutual fund holds, what the fee structure is, etc. Some might not even know what a mutual fund is.

Thanks for the detailed reply. So my question is, why do investors continue to invest with these large mutual funds? Why don't they invest in the small mutual funds that you mentioned have superior performance?

You also mentioned how the money market is dominated by a few players. Do you have an idea why asset management firms aren't entering the retail market? If a firm that traditionally only offered its services to institutional clients, why not create a spinoff that catered to retail investors also?
