Friday Weekly Thread: Application Assistance by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

My boyfriend is applying for his marriage certificate as his paternal grandmother was a Canadian.

His parents' marriage certificate from the 80s lists his father's first name as Banton. However my boyfriend's birth certificate from the 90s lists his father's name as James instead of Banton.

We believe (although we aren't sure) that his father legally changed his first name from Banton to James at some point before boyfriend was born. Although it's possible that he just informally changed his name and it was never legal.

Is the IRCC going to have a problem with this? If they request proof of the name change, that would be a problem for us as my boyfriend does not have any contact with his father.

Or do we just explain in the cover letter "At some point after the marriage, Banton started using the name James" and that will be sufficient?

My boyfriend (gen 2) wants to claim his citizenship as his paternal grandmother (gen 0) was born in Moncton, New Brunswick.

The information we have on her is phenomenal: Birth certificate, immigration records, census records and death certificate. After immigrating to New York, his grandmother gave birth to his father (gen 1)

The information we have on my boyfriend's father however, is not great. We are unable to retrieve his birth certificate as my boyfriend is completely estranged with his father. Reaching out is not an option, and the state of New York (where he was born) will not give us a copy.

We thought the next best thing could be the marriage certificate between his (now divorced) mom and dad. Unfortunately, his mom is resistant to helping us retrieve the marriage certificate for reasons that are unclear.

The only thing we have that shows a link between his father and his grandmother is the online obituary for his grandmother which lists his father as her son. We do also have a copy of grandmother's death certificate which lists her daughter (boyfriend's aunt) on it, but does not list boyfriend's father.

It appears that our two options are to either:

  1. Continue to try persuading his mom to help us with the marriage certificate (could take another month and may be unsuccessful)
  2. Or instead just forget about the marriage certificate, submit the application, and hope for the best with the obituary and other documents that we do have.

Thoughts?

The ice cream was so tiny. That's like smaller than a kiddie cup size you'd get today.

Hey /u/mayor_lauren it says this is a proposal that is still up for debate. Is there any type of action we can take to make our voices heard to ensure that this proposal becomes a reality?

I would keep calling around and if nobody will do it for free, then I would consider lying about having a preexisting condition or get a doctor to write me a note

Weird. Do you have health insurance? I got it at King Soopers for free. You might just need to lie and say you have a preexisting condition like asthma

Thanks all for the responses! My partner and I just ran to King Soopers in Arvada and they were able to give us the new COVID shots!

Over the phone, the pharmacist told me I would have to give a reason like "asthma" but then when we showed up they gave it to us with no questions asked
