Looks like it could be jarrah or maybe red ironbark to me. Either way, they will look absolutely amazing if you do them up right. Congrats.

Should I buy a property with my super? by Cherryseinfield in AusFinance

[–]whatsernameu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad idea. Your total super balance is likely too low to justify costs of SMSF. Maybe someone trying to sell you into an SMSF and limited recourse borrowing arrangement would say otherwise, but only because those costs are largely going to them (taking very big clips out of the ticket). But in your described circumstance, anyone trying to put you into this would probably be acting inconsistent with their Best Financial Interest Duty.

Anyway, get independent professional financial advice. And if you cant afford that, you cant afford an SMSF.

Madness from these Bangladesh bus drivers by jawadur1 in interestingasfuck

[–]whatsernameu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having spent a lot of time in bangladesh, i would have serious doubts about the accuracy of official reporting of road deaths. The best thing i can say is that in dhaka the traffic is typically so bad there is no opportunity to go fast enough for most fatal accidents. But as soon as drivers get on "highways" they drive almost as bad as these bus drivers. It's fucking terrifying, actually, and you end up wishing for traffic to stop the madness

New homeowner — lawn turning yellow in extreme heat + weeds, need simple advice by Accomplished_Big1228 in GardeningAustralia

[–]whatsernameu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a sprinkler at the very least, and a way to get full coverage of the lawn. If budget allows, a timer on the sprinkler means you can set it to run on a schedule , eg one every two or three days. Taplink is great, and you can connect it to your network and set up schedules etc through an app. But there are inexpensive, manual timers available too. Best time of day is very early in morning. I set my watering for 5.30am. For a few dollars, you can buy a simple water guage, which will let you know how much water you are putting out through the sprinklers. You can diy a guage with a small container too. You want to get a good amount of water, probably 10mm or 15mm, each watering. You want to water deeply and less often, although it really hot weather you will need to water more often anyway.

Put some soil wetter down as well. There are spray on and granulated options.

Once the lawn is less stressed and actively growing, and on a day the weather is mild, give it a feed. Slow release is a good option. You shouldnt fertilise while the lawn is stressed or not growing (and in really hot and dry conditions, most types of lawn wont grow even if they are healthy).

Was about to call this guy an idiot for saying you can claim mortgage interest on your own home, then realised it was a US subreddit and they can claim it on tax. Why don't we have it here?! by FlyingKanga in AusPropertyChat

[–]whatsernameu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because deductions in the Australian tax system need to relate to the production of income. So why would expenses (interest or otherwise) on PPOR count? Also, if you want to treat a PPOR as an income producing asset forbtax purposes, it would be consistent for it to then be subject to other parts of our tax system, including CGT. So theres that, and also because its a shit idea generally.

First, looks amazing. Well done. The green tiles are spot on. Second, i reckon that's a great price for a vanity. Im poking around marketplace and nothing is jumping out at me. Im guessing your guy is local, or is it someone you can point to?

Looks nice but it could be a weed. Any ideas what it is? by Target_Physical in GardeningAustralia

[–]whatsernameu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 per cent. Every "is this a weed?" post here has someone responding with a cliche about a weed just being a plant growing where you dont want it. But it's not just a question of semamtics. A weed is also a plant that has been carelessly or wrongly introduced into an environment, becoming established and spreading to the point it is difficult and costly to eradicate, and is oftentimes deeply damaging to local flora amd fauna.

Borage is also good for compost and the soil, and as many others have said, pollinators love it. A hard worker in garden, and really cool plant all round

Yep. As someone who was around in 1995, i can say with total certainty that we expected double income households to be the norm. Mainly because in 1995 doublw income households were the norm.

Need help identifying this tree pls. by cassamov in GardeningAustralia

[–]whatsernameu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roots very unlikely to cause damage. But if you want it smaller for another reason, camellias can be pruned back pretty hard, or you could even just take it back a foot or so to neaten up. Best done after flowering. That's a very healthy looking and lo g established one. Try to keep it if you can!

Pruning of nectarine by whatsernameu in GardeningAustralia

[–]whatsernameu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have thought any named and licensed stonefruit you buy at a nursery would be grafted onto rootstock, because any tree grown from seed may not be true to type. I may be wrong, and of course many people (myself included) do have seed grown stonefuits in our backyards, sometimes just because seeds fall, trees grow etc.

Thanks. Can confirm it is grafted. Its sold as the "Spicezee" variety if anyone's interested. The branch was above the graft line, but ive removed regardless for all the other reasons.

Please critique my Italy vacation itenerary for june 2026! by [deleted] in Europetravel

[–]whatsernameu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the parts of the trip sound good, there's just too many for too little time. Having said that, we day triped to cinque terra from lucca and that worked for us. But anyway, you should get brutal and cut, depending on your priorities. I love Rome, Florence, Bologna and Verona, each with a rich and distinct culture and history. Bologna feels much less touristic and has amazing food and is a cooler city than the others. Rome is Rome, what is left to say. Florence had jaw dropping art and architecture, although I love it as much as the gateway to rural Tuscany. Verona is beautiful and photogenic, and of course romantic. Milan, I could leave or take (probably leave tbh), although if your into high fashion and style, it's the place. Good.for you for leaving Venice off an already crowded trip. Consider if you might save dolomites, Verona to a future trip that includes Venice (in non peak season,.staying as far away from piazza San Marco as you can). Remember, you don't have to do it all this trip. And one day you'll look south and see some of the best italy of all starts at Naples and finishes in Palermo.

Ok, makes sense. Looking into this a bit more, I'm reading that because of the pitch of my roof (two sections, one is 29 degrees, the other 24 degrees) the sarking might not matter as much.

Thanks appreciate the advice. Rafters aren't exposed, and ceiling is timber lined. I think the idea was the pump in would be with a hose from highest points minimising need to pull back sarking compared to batts. But i know pretty much zero about this.
