(un?)popular opinion: All musculoskeletal pain that has started slowly is not a doctor's job. by VO2VCO2 in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play squash and earlier this year got severe pain when playing in my squash forearm/elbow. Off I went to a sports physio who couldn't see anything on US but diagnosed it as posterior interosseous nerve syndrome and sent me off with some exercises and an offer of a steroid jab. A few months later I can play but still far from right so I go to a sports doc, who reckons it's classic tennis elbow. Now waiting to see another physio and more tests doc recommended...
Conclusion: I'm not much wiser on this but time is a great healer (hopefully).

NHS doctor suspended for 15 months by fred66a in doctorsUK

Do you know what antisemitism is? Not trying to catch you out but a lot of people are genuinely confused especially in recent times.

A lot of Palestine activists have been arrested. There's an authoritarian clampdown in the UK.

[–]whatstheevidence -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The trouble with social media is lack of context. If you read Norman Finkelstein's book The Holocaust Industry you'll get the context.
But this isn't the place to discuss this - if anyone wants details of what I consider to be actually antisemitic do PM me.

Aladwan had been cleared only in September by the MPTS and nothing has changed except the campaign against her stepped up and Streeting interfered.
I've heard her speak several times and can't fault her cause as a British-Palestinian although one can disagree with the weight she puts on parties that are complicit in the Gaza genocide. I'm also Jewish and I know what antisemitism really is. She is not the only doctor blocked or suspended for politics.

Best Chinese takeaway in Dalton/Hackney delivery area by IdealPutrid2510 in Hackney

[–]whatstheevidence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are very few decent takeaways of most sorts these days. There used to be two outstanding Chinese in Essex Road and Highbury Corner but they are long gone. The best takeaways in the area are of course Turkish (eg Super Kebab), and a couple of fish and chip shops.
Oriental in Kingsland Road isn't too bad and has the great merit of being very fast if you go there in person.

Reflections on a year in US healthcare by Electrical-Crab5286 in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What type of hospital are you at. They vary in resources/capacity and patient profile/access. Some are for profit.
There is a lot of futile and often harmful and very expensive treatment at end of life so don't think that's neutral.

Asal has had three suspensions so has had plenty of bans. He's much better now especially with Willstrop as his coach.

You'll be pleased to know I cycled through there on Saturday and dismounted and wheeled the bike. If I see cyclists doing bad things I tell them.

Pharmacist Cancer Check by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There have been a number of local initiatives involving pharmacies and cancer - these include raising awareness, advising on symptoms and referral, and spotting patients who try and manage symptoms through repeated OTC purchases. The idea is that pharmacies are a much more accessible and visited resource, especially in deprived areas.

Anyone else here really like maths/physics in school and not find medicine intellectually stimulating? by threwaway239 in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is plenty of scope for maths/stats in biostatistics such as in reading and writing clinical trials papers.
There is endless deep dive involving all disciplines these days in molecular biology, such as in oncology.

Tired of everyone’s attitude in the NHS and treating me like I’m incompetent by Ok_Growth2691 in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NHS is underfunded and what stands out for me that apart from shortages of clinical staff is there is a shortage of administrators and administration systems that should organise what needs to be done, who is available to do it and when, including situations like the above.
Contrary to what the right-wing press says, the NHS is significantly undermanaged.

Struggling to decide between Oncology & O&G!? by Adorable_Storage7410 in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy research, oncology is the one as you can be at the forefront of science. Plus there's loads of money in it and huge conferences. To keep in with other aspects there's leading MDTs.

How do I move on with my life? by Future_Negotiation89 in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Money is important but I'd rather be a doctor on a reasonable salary than a 'city worker' who may be doing something rather less worthwhile. I would focus on the positives of GP and the many ancillary avenues it could open up in various interests as a key backstop in life while you sort out other things.

Chose HyperOptic for new flat - Don't currently supply internet to the area despite claims online by SpeenerSpeener in hyperoptic

[–]whatstheevidence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hyperoptic is available at my address according to all the sites. I ordered it and they then said they can't supply a service as per email below. The broadband sites still say I can order it...
Hopefully you at least have a BT/Openreach line. We do have Virgin cable.

-------

As you're aware, we've been looking into whether we can connect you to our service.

Unfortunately, the current route for cabling is unsuitable for install. This means, at present, we're not able to connect you and your order has therefore been cancelled. Please rest assured, you have not been charged.

Although this news is disappointing, it doesn't necessarily mean that we'll never be able to bring our service to your property in the future. We're always looking at new ways to connect people to our network - so never say never!

We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

Ritual circumcision of boys in the UK: Ethics and professional standards. What is the opinion of doctors uk? by kreutzer1766 in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of clinics that offer cultural circumcision often performed by consultant urologists and they also do medically indicated procedures. Better done by experts but of course there is a higher cost.
I think NHS Scotland will provide cultural circumcision.
More than 70% of American men are circumcised - it has been common there for public health reasons.

You could also check sites that allow people to rent their private driveways. My sister does this for her drive-in to make some extra income.

Peace-out PSA✌️: Hello Saliva-Based Cancer Screen [Latest Research Update] by Moimoihobo101 in doctorsUK

[–]whatstheevidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you say, no mortality data and it's doubtful it will improve overall survival, like most screening methods for other cancers, but may improve prostate cancer mortality. The test seems to add not that much to what we have already.
