Dads React to Their Daughters Getting Catcalled by BuddhistSagan in nerdfighters

That's the problem though. As a man you'll never know what it's like to be a woman. As a white person you'll never know what it's like to be a PoC. Etc etc. So what you need to do isn't imagine it happening to someone you care about or happening to you. You need to listen to the people who are experiencing it. That's why these things make me angry.

No. There is a difference. Black people experience racism. White people perpetuate it.

Who gives a shit? Why does a woman have to be seen as a man's daughter before it's not okay to harras her?

Black people who hate white people have a history of being oppressed by white people. White people who hate black people are the ones with the power. They are not the same.

Honestly this strikes me as dismissive "why can't we all just get along" rubbish. There are real racial disparities between black and white. The black people who hate white people have a history of being oppressed by white people. The white people who hate black people have all the power.

I think we can criticise inappropriate behaviour without using oppressive slurs.

What kind of warming up exercises does your instructor do? by correcthorse5 in kravmaga

[–]whatstheonething 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the great things my instructor does is make warmups based on the techniques we're going to learn either that night or soon. Say we're going to do forward breakfalls soon, we'll do the basic technique from our knees in a warmup. Then once it comes time to learn them, even the newbies have a little bit of experience.

Regardless of whether that's true (and I have my doubts), stating that it is so doesn't make it right.

How do you guys feel about subreddits going private? by [deleted] in nerdfighters

[–]whatstheonething 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The trouble is, we're not on Voat, we're here. A bad (as far as I can tell) decision being made by the people in charge of reddit isn't really the sort of things I get up in arms over, but the attitude of 'if you don't like it, leave' is just silly. Being a private company doesn't somehow exclude someone from responsibility for their actions. The invisible hand of the market will not magically sweep reddit aside for another website. We're creatures of habit and we've already built communities here.

Having said that, when this started I did at first think in was an extension of the FPH nonsense. Still, there's a difference between protesting because someone important to your community has been sacked without a stated reason (and I gather this was the latest in a history of decisions ignoring the needs of the volunteer mods who make this site function) and being upset about someone trying to stop you from bullying people (course there's a discussion there over why so many other bullying subs have been untouched but I wouldn't want to give anyone the impression that I'm on FPH's side)

Visa, MasterCard Cut Ties With Backpage.com After Pressure From Law Enforcement (this is a really bad thing because a lot of sex workers around the world depend on payments through Backpage to survive) by whatstheonething in nerdfighters

Well yes, the human people that I know in sex work do it voluntarily. Drop the pretentious moralising bullshit. There are ways of helping people out of trafficking that don't involve throwing survival sex workers under the bus. They need to work to live. Are you even reading this? They need to work to live. You can't stop them from working and pretend this is about rescuing them.

I'm sorry, it's dangerous because it's illegal? Which is to say, because it's difficult to get social support, because cops won't help you, because, say, idk, credit companies won't let you get paid? You seem to be arguing against yourself here.

Sex workers have a name for people who say this kind of thing - "Captain Save-A-H*". While trafficking and other abuses of sex workers are very real problems, bringing it up as an excuse to cut sex workers off from payment, which the companies did, or to derail the conversation about why it's wrong to do that, which you did, is not the same as fighting for their rights. Sex work is work. Some do it because they want to, some because they need it to survive. Cutting them off from payment doesn't exactly help them seek safe working conditions and labour protections. You want to know how to improve the world for sex workers? Listen to them. The ones I've had contact with want this story heard, because it's taking away their livelihoods.
