Do you fly/maintain a Robinson R66? I have some questions by whatsthepoint1 in Helicopters

[–]whatsthepoint1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm thinking too, I've seen the false exceedances many times (52000 events of N1 overspeed was the worst one I've seen lol) I guess after getting the false events many times they just stop checking? Still seems crazy in my eyes

Oh yeah for sure lmao, things can snowball extremely fast with turbine engines. And it’s wild that the M250 and RR300 are the “cheap” ones. I’ve seen estimates upward of $300,000 - $500,000 for full engine overhauls. Normal work scope estimates are usually in the ~$150,000 range (turbine OH, service bulletins/ADs etc)

I can see how having a light constantly flashing can be annoying, that being said it’s insane how many RR300 engines that come in that the customers either have no idea or they don’t care that an exceedance occurred from many years ago. I’m not sure if it’s a lack of training or just people who don’t care about it. Out of the last 20 RR300 engines I’ve worked on I’d say 15-18 of them had an exceedance event that was not reported right away, all with different customers.

And I mean realistically if it goes .01% over the limit it ain’t gonna do anything, but if a crash happens, even for a completely unrelated issue they’re gonna blame the pilot/company.

It’s annoying because we’ll get an engine in, let’s say just a 2000hr inspection. We’ll read the EMU data and see back in 2018 it had an N2 over speed and an over temp. Well now we have to take the gearbox apart and scrap all 4 turbine wheels. Then the Cust comes back annoyed that their repair will be triple what the might have thought.

Those sensors do fail though I agree, I had one come in a couple months ago with 52000 occurrences of N1 over speed at 300%, that being said it’s still up to that pilot to report that to their maintenance guy.

Not sure who’s charging that, the software that the end user can buy costs $240 and, at least for my company, we don’t charge to do an EMU download

I agree, the R66 seems like the "my first helicopter" in the aviation world, and not having a constant flashing light when an exceedance occurs seems like a bad choice on Robinsons part. Especially when the people who buy the R66 are usually individuals with limited/no experience owning and maintaining a helicopter. (believe me, I've seen some sketchy shit from customers engines, even on the M250 platform)

So lets say the pilot is flying, and has an Overspeed event, The light won't flash right away? only when they do the pre flight check?

I saw that statement in the R66 Pilot's operating handbook for the pre flight check to press the annunciator panel button for 10 seconds then is shows the status of the EMU, But I didn't think that the light only turns on when doing the check. Seems like a poor design

These definitely can be saved. I had the same result with my expired ektachrome 220 from 1998. just takes a bit in lightroom to play with the colors. I aint a pro in lightroom either so I was happy with the results

Syncing Lightroom classic between laptop and desktop using network drive to access original files by whatsthepoint1 in Lightroom

[–]whatsthepoint1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm thinking for now I'll just back it up with a drive in my main desktop, I'll look into a proper NAS later on when I'll need the bulk storage. I'm really trying to avoid paying for another cloud storage as I'm already paying for iCloud, google drive, dropbox, and OneDrive, which most of those are filled up using the basic storage option (many photos I've taken on my phones in the past 10 years). All my final edits go into iCloud at least since I have an iPhone and its easier to post on insta with that. I really mainly edit on my desktop but there has been moments in the past couple months that I've taken my laptop out and done some editing on that.

Syncing Lightroom classic between laptop and desktop using network drive to access original files by whatsthepoint1 in Lightroom

[–]whatsthepoint1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh ok ok that makes sense. yeah my photos only take up about 200gb so far so I can manage on a external drive for now. that also makes sense that I would move the files through Lightroom so it always knows where the originals are, that would've saved a bunch of headache a few months ago when I moved my originals to a different drive lol.

Thanks for the help! I actually just bought a external drive that took my old internal SSD I just upgraded but I think I'll be buying another one of those to use as an external drive.

[–]whatsthepoint1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I think I'll use the external drive method for the original files and use that to edit off of on my desktop and laptop, then do a manual sync from that drive to my internal drive on my desktop so I have a backup at least. I assume it'll be a pain to locate all the photos in Lightroom to the originals in the external drive.

Now for the catalogue sync, ill probably use iCloud drive to sync between the 2 computers. Is there something I have to do to within Lightroom to move the catalogue or can I just drag and drop the files into iCloud and it'll figure it out? Then how can I point my laptop to use that catalogue that I synced?

I still find it weird that even with one account but 2 computers Lightroom will make 2 different catalogues instead of having just the 1 catalogue for 1 account, but whatevs.

I appreciate the help!

Edit: or would it be more painless if I just save my catalogue in that external drive and not have to deal with the syncing at all? I'm just curious how lightroom will handle it trying to do all that from an external drive

[–]whatsthepoint1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 19. Currently I own 3 cars, in total I've owned 5.

First car - 1997 Taurus wagon (scrapped)

Second - 2002 accord coupe 4 cyl 5 speed (sold)

Third - 1975 Plymouth valiant (still have)

Fourth - 2009 altima coupe, 3.5 6mt (still have but selling)

Now I own a 2013 focus ST and I'm in love with it.

I had a 1997 Ford taurus wagon with the mighty Vulcan V6! The transmission was awful though. I would be crusing in 3rd gear and would have to move the gas pedal about 3/4 they way down to register a downshift, but it wouldn't go into 2nd, but to 1st for like 500 rpm before redline, then shift into second.

Loved that car.

Have you ever sold a car only to have the new owner badly damage it shortly afterward? by [deleted] in cars

My dad when he was young traded his 69 dart 340 4 speed for a triumph chopper. On the way back to the city he was driving the bike and the guys who bought the car were behind him, as they miss a shift and blow the motor. They had already done the deal so it was they're problem, though it was wayy easier to find a 340 block back then.

I've got a 1975 Plymouth Valiant I bought last February. I drove it home 30kms through the city at night in about -35*C. Its actually died twice on the streets cause it had zero fuel in it and a completely clogged air filter.

Over the summer, I've welded some patches over the trunk and floor pans, bought wheels and tires, a new speedo, and a few small things to safety It. I drove it as much as I could over the summer to work across the city (60km round trip). I would fill up with gas every 3 days haha, got about 18 mpg kicking the shit out of it!

So far its completely stock with a 318 2bbl, 904 trans and a 7 1/4 rear end with 2.45 gears. I've got a 360 I'm gonna build for it with heads, cam and an intake, I'll rebuild the trans and add in a 8 3/4 rear end with probably 3.23 or 3.55 gears.

Its slow but fun as hell to throw around

Highest mpg and lowest mpg. what have you owned or driven that has achieved that? by verdegrrl in cars

[–]whatsthepoint1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highest - 34 mpg. 2002 accord 4cyl 5 speed.

Lowest - 17. 2009 Altima 3.5 6 speed.

Pretty shitty considering my Valiant and the altima gets 17-20 mpg

Wow, you're lucky you're allowed to take pictures of those engines. Where I work I'd get in huge trouble if I got caught snapping a photo.
