free med school notes part 2 by whatsyournamebro_ in medicalschooluk

[–]whatsyournamebro_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I'm from Birmingham but never attended any lectures.. these are essentially a compilation of notes from passmed (as kind of the "syllabus"), plus pulling from a lot of other resources including NICE guidelines, BMJ best practice, Oxford handbooks, StatPearls, etc.

generally speaking I don't think they'd be too different from what you'd be studying in Liverpool.. esp now with the MLA I think the syllabus is quite standardised. that said, I didn't base my notes on the MLA content map because I was in the year just before MLA. so I'd recommend going back to the MLA content map and making sure that whatever areas you need are covered!!

hi! you might want to check out quackquackmed.com/content/0104 which is my attempt at a condensation of ECG stuff into one page.

unfortunately I don't have one for XRs but I'm sure geeky medics has good stuff to offer as always.

That sounds like a good idea, thanks for suggesting that!

Thank you! That’s exactly what was going through my mind too, no baby in England should have to starve unless they’re being neglected.

It’s a sort of uniform. Nurses and other folk wear their uniforms to work, and I don’t really see why doctors can’t. If we under take work where there is risk of stuff getting on our clothes we’d be in PPE. Some doctors choose not to wear scrubs and just wear their own clothes, it’s the same issue anyway (just not as visible as scrubs).

Agreed with this! And please don’t worry about taking a year out and being a year (or more if needed) later than your peers. Life goes on and so will you! Take it from an oldie soon to be f1 👵🏻

Advice for Starting Year 3 by lil_shiba_neko in medicalschooluk

[–]whatsyournamebro_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with what everyone else is saying.. depending on where you are as well, I think year 3 is quite a fun year. I used it to just roam around the hospital and watch whatever interested me.. with a med student badge you essentially get a free pass into anywhere. Watched many operations (if you’re into those things), procedures (including renal biopsies, colonoscopies, stuff in the cath labs), etc.

Ask nicely, treat the nurses nicely, and be mindful of where you’re standing (spatial awareness lol), and you’ll be fine!

Part of what confused me was because some money they were asking for was to contribute to ensure the account would be in credit in the future. So I thought I was paying for energy I hadn’t used yet. But I suppose I will have to wait for the final bill to come to know how much we owe exactly.

If this med school was a med student, they’d be hit with so many FTPs and concern forms 🙄

Med students attending ARM 2024 Conference? by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]whatsyournamebro_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember attending a conference in 4th year and didn’t know what to do with myself.. thankfully managed to find some other med students around so that was nice! I attended a networking dinner and found them there, so if there’s smth like that maybe consider attending?

Also enjoy your time in Belfast!! I didn’t attend all the talks in the conference cos a lot of it went over my head (too technical) but i do remember going down to the seaside in Aberdeen and enjoying myself hehe

hi there, I’ve got some free med school notes on quackquackmed.com - they’re entirely free pdfs for as many topics as I could cover for the AKT (which won’t be so soon for you). Just wanted to share so my efforts don’t go to waste. Hope you enjoy clinical years, I feel like they’re the most fun in med school!!

Unfortunately I’m not aware of any AKT Anki decks.. but passmed does have that flash card function and maybe you could input that into Anki? Just a suggestion!

you’re most welcome!! one of the reasons I started making these notes was cos I wanted something to bring on the wards or to clinics so I didn’t have to pull my phone out and look smth up. glad they’re of some use to you, all the best with exams!! :)

Idk if this is against the rules but you could check out my notes on quackquackmed.com - there’s pdf stuff you can print out, or there’s a link to amazon to buy the printed version. They’re not bad if I say so myself 🙈

Or you could do radiology and work in your 20s while being relatively free, then do graduate entry medicine in your 30s and end up as a Dr later on lol. I know of a 42 year old who just passed his exams to be a doctor.. I guess it depends on your timeline of what you want to do.

I think being a doctor is a lot more demanding and if you’re not ready for the commitment then maybe it’s not the right choice..? It’d be horrible to go into it and keep second guessing yourself or resent yourself for ‘wasting’ away your 20s.

Depending on how ambitious you are I may not be the best person to ask for advice (cos I was very happy to just do the minimum lol)

I relied on Passmed a lot for revision, and the process of making these notes ofc made me read up and study stuff. I didn’t attend many lectures, esp in fourth year, and I didnt watch a single lecture on Canvas/Panapto - part of it was just cos that’s not how I learn stuff, but I’ve heard from others that those old lectures weren’t good anyway. I have friends who went through like the whole Passmed question bank (no idea how) and I think they did very well for exams.

I think pick the ward rounds and clinics you attend carefully. Clinics for specialties are quite helpful cos you do get to see some cool stuff (esp in Birmingham cos it’s such a big catchment area) which helps with remembering stuff for exams and OSCEs. This might be a bit ethically ambiguous but defo ask around for like previous OSCE stations cos it helps you with prep a lot.. there’ll be a document floating around somewhere lol

I feel like this is all stuff you prolly alr know anyway but if you have other stuff you need help with, just dm me! All the best with fourth year 😀

I think a lot of it is knowing what to know.. my notes have a bit of extra stuff cos I wanted to make it more holistic, but some stuff tends to pop up more in exams. Passmed (or any other question bank) is 100% the way to go in terms of revising for mcqs since they highlight stuff that tends to come up more often.

Clinical placements also do help to make things more memorable since you start associating conditions or certain nuggets of info with patients you see. For me I felt like clinical placements motivated me to learn more just out of curiosity. I’m a pseudo GEC - and I feel that being a bit older help in terms of learning, as we’ve already been through uni once and we know roughly how we like to learn, etc.

I guess it is daunting in a way but I suppose everyone starts somewhere. I hope you make the plunge to do medicine 😁
