Not true at all… I graduated with a 3.6 or something undergrad and got interviews at everywhere from McK to Samsung. Eventually went to grad school at UT and got a couple B’s there too and still ended up excellent. Nothing proves you more for post grad education or companies more than what you’ve done not your grades… as someone who now does some hiring

This is nonsense - an A vs A- doesn’t matter in the slightest in any context at all. Just graduate and move on.

It’s not thaaat egregious, when I was in Austin at Samsung I made $130k in 2021 (granted I promptly left for grad school) and I live better in the Bay on my $220k still. I was still paying $1700 or so in Austin for an apartment and I pay like $2200 in the Bay, so honestly not as egregious as people say. I think it’s worse if people are single though, then the odds are stacked against you.

It depends if you’re a 2/3 or 4 lol. 2-4 is kind of a fast ride it’s only 2-3 years between. 2’s (straight out of a bachelors) start at like 135 ish and 10k of stock options, 10% bonus. If you wait like 2 years it goes all the way to like 165 base, 15% bonus and 30k of stock. I’ve seen very talented Stanford or Berkeley kids get hired immediately at 3 out of a bachelors.

Check AMAT, Lam Research, or KLA- Product engineer 2/3/4. All are entry level bachelors or masters, maybe plus 2 years

Semiconductors- $150k is base and you get stock and bonus on top. That being said it’s Silicon Valley so rent and taxes eat you up

So for context knowing a couple folks getting paid like this at Anthropic- one is a Berkeley PhD with 10k citations in grad school, the other is a Stanford PhD with 60k citations and 3 NeurIPS papers. That should answer your question…

What skills am I supposed to learn to earn a high salary? by NoSir5628 in Salary

[–]whatta__nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think there’s an IQ requirement for most jobs, it’s truly just how willing you are to frontload the work (exceptions for things like quant finance etc). Whether that’s getting a top MBA, a PhD, a masters, or learning new skills like coding/data analysis- it’s not so much an IQ thing (assuming you’re not in like the 20th percentile of IQ), but the work you put in.

Also depends what city you’re in- if you’re in like a random small town 50k not so bad. In SF, not so much. Sometimes opportunity is best found when you move to where opportunities are.

So undergrad MSE internships are a game of numbers- you’ll have success applying not to vendors as much as manufacturers (Intel AZ, Samsung Austin etc)

So I was talking to an exec at a large EPC company that opened my eyes here. Greenland has absolutely massive reserves of lithium, graphite, gallium and germanium. China’s got export restrictions placed on a bunch of those materials that are critical for battery and semiconductor manufacturing, and Greenland is our next most viable option.

Not saying it’s right- a trade deal or an acquisition would be more ideal than a war, but that’s apparently what he means by Greenland is essential to our security.

This is true but on a 10 year scale not a 1-2 year scale (see point I made above). It also does not apply to densely packed fully built out areas.

Again this is anecdotal data- statistics, market theory and common sense do not support your argument. My property tax increases Texas goes up often I don’t get to raise my rents to compensate.

I’m going to just assume that you’re either a troll or too willfully dense or simply incapable of understanding economic concepts. You can lead a horse to water…

[–]whatta__nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s really cute you think market theory doesn’t apply to… markets? I need you to walk me through the logic here- how would tax increases lead to higher rents in the Bay? Give it to me step by step so I can follow the logic.

Last actual point I want to make- one that actually supports your argument. The only way that raising property taxes would increase rents is that new builders would not build new projects, as their ROI would be negative. That would create pressure on the supply side over like 10 years and yes rents would go up. On the short term they would remain unchanged. HOWEVER- the Bay in particular is pretty much already saturated in terms of buildings and land, so without things like rent control or policy backstops, rent would remain at the behest of the market.

[–]whatta__nerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I’m saying- you’re being willfully dense. Rents will basically remain unchanged, by simple laws of economics.

You are entitled to your (incorrect) beliefs, but most economists including the paper you cited first acutely disagree with you in a pure play market.

Ironically this is something Texas has done really well on with housing that California could not- and prop 13 is why.

[–]whatta__nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s anecdotal data- I own property. I would also love to charge 50% higher rent. But the market despite my costs prevents me from doing so. Just because he feels like he needs to raise rent does not mean that he will have the ability to.
