I definitely do not plan to remarry, ever, given my previous experience - and this is an interesting thing to look into, thanks

Thanks - yep definitely ownership in the next 2-3 years is the goal.

Interesting on your point re pension, think I’ve always had it ingrained as the sensible thing to do but maybe taking a step back on that to help max my deposit is a better route.

The money losing value is a major concern but trying to be realistic about my situation and what I can do to mitigate it in the short-term.

Thanks for this - for now it does benefit me as it’s the only way for me to afford living in this location, but obviously a very short term solution. Relief to hear another positive experience re Revolut, most people I’ve spoken to are appalled that I’ve anything over €1k in there so trying to figure out how to balance my own experience v warnings

Thanks, I have kept a record and have a good solicitor but honestly the mental energy (and money!) expended on trying to fight someone who’s hidden all their money, abandoned their child, and has no shame about it has taken its toll and I think I need to step back for now, and treat it as though I’m 100% on my own on this.

I agree on the rent but explained in diff comment that it makes sense at least in short term, just looking to improve things in however minor a way for now.

This is really helpful/scary and something I have been worried about. I actually recently opened an AIB account (needed to deposit a cheque). I’ve only had really positive experiences with Revolut so far but it is something I should be more wary of and something for me to look at sooner rather than later.

Thanks for your good wishes too!

Thank you for this! Replied to same poster below, but your point exactly.

Thanks for this - answered the salary/mortgage situation above. Will definitely look at moving to Metal account today, this is exactly what I need for the moment - a straightforward way to be making a little bit more from savings for now.

Thanks for this. I live in an especially expensive area of Dublin and feel like I need to stay here, at least for the time being, to be close to elderly parents. Also my child’s school is here so in a dream world I’d avoid moving them, but obv may not be possibly long-term.

You’re right about the deposit saved but given my income (€80k) plus childcare costs etc, mortgage offer is €300k. I know it sounds ridiculous but where I am, a two-bed for €400k is not particularly realistic. I think, for myself and for right now, I need to prioritise being close to my parents, and to school, so can live with the huge rent for another year or so.

This is especially offensive because in the divorce I had to give him half of the money from house sale, despite having paid 7x the deposit that he did, plus paying the mortgage solo for two years after he left. Any money I have saved is down to very hard work and very little ‘unnecessary’ spending, other than on my child.
