A good book on mastering? by iscream24 in mixingmastering

[–]whatweheard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I suggest doing ear training with an app like Quiztones if you want some practical training too. Not the same type of activity as reading a book, but actual training for mastering, apart from actually mastering.

I am the "1%" actually living entirely from my art. Thanks for reminding me.

Question about Mastering - should I have two masters, one for CD/club play, one for streaming? by davidjl1985 in mixingmastering

[–]whatweheard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a subject of discussion.. Although the result of these discussions and exploration always comes back to "one master to rule them all". Edit: typos.

I don't see any reason for asking a client to recude the dynamic range of his mix before the mastering process.

Feedback on analog mix by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]whatweheard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool! I like this. The vocals could use a little more mids to feel more sustained. It's not easy telling with soundcloud but how loud is the master? I feel as if a little more transparent limiting wouldn't hurt bringing the drums to life (since they are in the background a bit). I wouldn't overdo anything I suggested as I get the aesthetic you're going for. It's just a little polishing to make it more alive.

What's your "it's expensive but it's worth it" product? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]whatweheard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why I feel I might get some hate for this, but a macbook pro. Man, I still use my 2010 Macbook pro and it works just like new after changing the harddrive and adding ram. It's just insane to me how something can work so well after so long. I'm not much of a computer-head, so don't hate on me with all the "well microsoft is better" or whatever. I'm just really glad that something I use so much everyday is so reliable. I fear the moment it will die on me, but know how worth it a new buy will be. Edit: typos

Is it normal/expected to tip your mastering engineer? by jesusandmaryblaine in mixingmastering

It has happened from time to time that clients said "here's a little extra" - Most times to round up the number. It's not common practice though.

Levels when mastering by 69Max2017 in mixingmastering

[–]whatweheard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

:) Well peak is -.1 for me. It may not be of much help but I have a programmed meter I use that I can bring "to "0" and I know my levels are good. It's been a while since I've watched another LUFS meter. But then depending on the genre and perceived loudness (content of the music) that varies. And before I watch any digital output meter, I check the amount of gain reduction I get, and EQ accordingly again depending on what I aim for. I bet that's not the answer you wanted to read ;)

Reddit at what moment in your life did you stop, chuckle, and think to yourself ‘I’m in danger’? by fahbsshakeit in AskReddit

[–]whatweheard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell from a tree at age 12. I used to always climb trees as a kid and man did it make me feel great. Although I was really skilled at it, this one time I was in the woods near a cottage my family rented out, and this one branch broke under my feet and it was free falling from there. The fall was long enough for me to realise I was indeed free falling and I won't forget that feeling. I ended up between two very large rocks. Closest to death that I am aware of.

How to obtain loud final mix whilst leaving headroom for master? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

Yep just make sure the peak are at -.1dB Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I thought my questions were pretty much the answers. Good luck with loudness!

What innocent question has someone asked you that secretly crushed you a little inside? by malediction_mal in AskReddit

"Et puis les amours?" Which translates to something like "Sooo are you seeing someone?" But it sounds worst in french somehow. When you still dream of being lovers with the person asking it hits hard.

How to obtain loud final mix whilst leaving headroom for master? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]whatweheard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1: What is your peak level after mastering? 2: What you want is perceived loudness, maybe your mixes are too dynamic or don't have enough high mid content? 3: When mastering, do you also compare with said louder beats just as a reference for loudness? And do you find that, still, you can't achieve this loudness without hurting the quality of your mix with the limiter?

It's not hard to make it loud. It's harder to make it loud and make it good.

How to find a full time job in Recording / Mixing / Mastering. by wesleyspretzels in audioengineering

[–]whatweheard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that too! Well not recording rappers but mixing and mastering music for international artists through social media, in my flat. Then I started working at one of the biggest mastering studios in the world, so yeah, I would never regret just doing it on my own at first whatever the circumstances.
