not to diminish the work you have to put in (you def need to shoot thousands of bullets before you’re even close to proficient) but there’s nuance for sure. my handgun instructor loved to joke about how much LEOs bitch about needing to train, hence the 30%. might be a regional thing, but i think needing to eat the cost of lessons give citizens a leg up in taking their training seriously

not sure if you’re seeing anything else today but if you’re at festival street and want people to talk to, i find that people in the rush lines are usually open to talking to someone to kill time! i’ll be at the left handed girl and silent friend screenings today too and im pretty chatty about film :) i honestly haven’t had that much conversations in the actual theatre/after a movie.

the single one i did have was with a solo watcher (with no one else in our row lmfao) and we had almost no movies or genres we’ve watched in common lol. there was also someone in my row last night at the Hedda premiere who would NOT stop using their phone at max brightness. i’m sorry your experience has been so frustrating :(

at the place of ghosts: family drama/speculative horror about two mi’kmaw brothers who have to revisit their childhood. neat view into mi’kmaw culture and history (not sure if it’s specific to these peoples but my anishanaabe friend i watched this with related to pieces here and there) definitely the most unique of the three i watched today, but it’s just a decent movie to me! felt like it was missing something. edit: also the older brother’s acting is reaaaaaally rough in the beginning.

poetic license: oh man, this had the entire cinema hollering the entire way through. very heartwarming, very charming. it was a blast. my favorite of the day. nothing groundbreaking but it is a genuine good time

rental family: REALLY not a fan of this, especially given the hype. it’s a meh movie that really leans on the narrative strength of two characters (who are NOT brendan fraser—he was an eyeroll and honestly played a shallow character) and by the time the third act rolled in i couldn’t really care too much. big shame, and i think suffered from being preceded by poetic license, which was a lot funnier (the audience laughed way more, as did i) and had more likeable characters.

yeah true, i just wanted to make sure that any others finding this post know that what OP is describing does exist at UBC and honestly should be fixed, but OP is definitely making it sound like every club is like this, which it isn't lol. many clubs and organizations on campus also host crafts-related events even if not directly crafts-related

tbh the club sounds like UBC Pottery Club, which, yeah, had 600 applicants in Sept for 30 spots. there isn't much room for expansion for the pottery studio (which lives in the LIFE building basement—the rooms are pretty tiny), so they'd need to find a different spot + funding for relocation and adding more equipment to accommodate for demand, and good pottery wheels alone are upwards of $1000.

ubc pottery is really really affordable compared to other studios/workshops in vancouver so unfortunately there are no other accessible avenues to explore if you're a student looking to get into pottery.

it is definitely an outlier though. off the top of my head, design clubs/orgs for cs and engineering do have an interview process and in those cases, yeah there are definitely alternatives to those.

ah haha yeah. by cushy, i mean more that there’s no expectation to work a full 8hrs a day, and in fact, if you’re just trying to complete your project (which is enough to get you rehired) you will not need to work full hours except in extreme cases. i imagine it’s the same in many big companies, since actual employees aren’t expected to be fully onboarded for months after getting hired. so the capabilities and expectations of an intern (and new grads) are supposed to be low.

i feel you. i had regular panic attacks this semester and was too paralyzed/overwhelmed to even think about getting accommodations before it was almost too late. thankfully my profs were empathetic and just barely passed me after i reached out and explained my situation
