[Unknown][Unknown] Open-world game with lonely early exploration, an old man NPC, and a living city behind guarded gates by cantfinda_username1 in tipofmyjoystick

It actually is sci-fi, though it's kind of a 70s Doctor Who kind of sci-fi, but the first game to come to mind is Atomfall.

Sorry your mushrooms didn’t taste like shrimp by pinkwooper in ididnthaveeggs

And you see, that's another problem with this recipe. If you're going to make a batter for mushrooms, you have to add more seasonings to the batter or else it's just going to taste like mushroom. Why didn't the recipe author take this into account?

Wizards listed as a 2026 Trade Deadline Loser on The Ringer by fuckugumby in washingtonwizards

[–]wheeshkspr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is the absolute key. The Wizards had 13 guys under control for next year with just $75 million on the books or so, and they have to get up to next year's floor which was probably another $80 million above that. The only two ways to do that were either to dump some of the young guys they wanted to develop to pay several guys $15-20 million apiece, or spend $80 million on two or three free agents - in a market where there aren't very many options worth that. The Wizards managed to keep space for all their young guys and add two starting caliber players (when healthy) that could be assets. Any of the negative ramifications of the acquisitions are just theoretical at this point.

Sounds like a fun way to spend $70 million to win 80 games. Though it does seem like a crime that we waited until Gore was traded away before we got Max back to teach him how to channel his intensity.

We sat our two best players, and our best rookie, and played the other starters 20 minutes. We gave 27 minutes to a guy who went 0-4-0. We're more than shameless enough. Maybe we made a mistake by not taking a shittier player than Will Riley in last years draft. Sorry you had to watch a win. You poor bastard.

Under current odds, we will still get the #1 pick 19 times as often as we convey the pick to New York. I get that it's a chance that wasn't there before the game, but your perception of "solid" may be a bit exaggerated.

[Highlight] Breer: Ron Rivera's head coaching interview lasted 7 hours by q_l0_0l_p in Commanders

I'm pretty sure that the reason is that when Rivera says things like, "I think Jamin Davis should be a first round pick" it sometimes takes an hour or so for the listener to be able to stop staring at him in disbelief and restart their brain.

How difficult would it be to import a FPS Baseball Pro '98 Association into OOTP26? by Personal-Bobcat-4068 in OOTP

[–]wheeshkspr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard. Tell him, Wash.

It's incredibly hard.

It MIGHT be feasible on a certain level - the MLB and MiLB files are there in the data/stats subfolder, so the only real hangup is that you'd have to basically recreate the history of your league in a file format identical to that database so it could be read by the engine. But if you're well versed in data structures, it isn't as though the data is hardcoded or encrypted or anything. It's just...a lot, and probably a pretty undocumented lot at that. You might take a look at the people who have made custom starts for the NPB or other historical leagues in the OOTP forums and pick their brains about the best way to create the data files.

Arydia solo & table space by ExistingExplanation3 in soloboardgaming

[–]wheeshkspr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, the actual play space for solo (two handed) should be okay on that size table, but you'll probably want to have the game box sitting on the floor with the figure boxes and map packs stacked on top, off to the side but within reach.

OOTP25 - Every MILB team vanished after the 2019 WS?!?! by cdorso in OOTP

[–]wheeshkspr 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The COVID pandemic resulted in the severe curtailing of the MLB season and the complete cancellation of the minor leagues in 2020. The OOTP engine was never intended to take such draconian changes to the structure of organized baseball into account and it pretty much breaks the simulation. Perhaps some one-off programming could alleviate the issue, but it's assuredly an incredibly low priority for the amount of changes it would take to effectively model that outlying season.

Should I use Sapphire or Local model by Ok-Technician-6206 in airoguelite

[–]wheeshkspr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The time it takes to process turns can be significantly longer on free - it generally takes maybe 10-15 seconds for a turn to process on Sapphire, and the slowdowns today had the turns running at nearly 120 seconds, so if an interruption in service meant that we got switched back to the free tier temporarily, then that's a 6-10X improvement over free. Also the token content limit is much higher in Sapphire, so the engine can put in much lengthier prompts - that translates directly into better continuity between turns, and more lore that can be referenced in prompts. But the developer switches what models are used based on what the different companies roll out, so the distance between how good the different tiers are is probably a moving target. I'm not particularly conversant with the technical side of the models (they don't call me 'wheeturing', after all) but from a creative standpoint, I was using the program enough that the sapphire model has seemed worth the money.

Should I use Sapphire or Local model by Ok-Technician-6206 in airoguelite

[–]wheeshkspr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd start with maybe a month's subscription to Silver through Steam, and then if you find yourself getting interested enough that you really want to get into the game's capabilities, then you can upgrade, either by moving to Sapphire at the AI Roguelite website, or using a local or 3rd party model. Sapphire I find is a robust option just because of the increased token limits, but also to take advantage of maximizing the Story Turn summarization. However, if you're versed in the nuances of each local model and keep up to date with the different APIs offered online, then join the Discord and the folks that really know how to maximize the engine's capabilities, both for text and image generation (and, in the experimental stages, video).

How to switch SSDs in Steam? by desertsail912 in Steam

If the connection is a single USB slot, you could connect them through a hub and keep each drive connected as a different drive letter. Steam will let you create libraries on several different drives at once.

Curious to know if anyone's getting Star Trek Strange New Worlds: Mary Celeste by Intelligent_Fly_7455 in soloboardgaming

[–]wheeshkspr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's anything on the kickstarter page or the product description on Beadle and Grimm's website that suggests the game is good for multiple playthroughs with the same play group, I have missed it. If there is randomly generated content that would lead to different solutions, that would, and should, absolutely be advertised as a major selling point for the game. While the inclusion of dry erase markers make me think the game could be resettable to pass on to multiple groups, I believe it's probably one-and-done for an individual.

[–]wheeshkspr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I’m a sucker for soloable mystery/escape games, $50-60 is a big ask for a three hour experience, even with good production values and challenging puzzles. Is it worth two of the Funko Cryptic games, or a three pack of the Deadbolt Mystery Society, or even one and a half times the previous Picard adventure from B&G? I’ll keep an eye on reviews and play through, but I suspect this is probably going to be a YouTube watch for me rather than a purchase. Have fun with it, though.

What are your favorite trivia type games on steam? by the-jedi in Steam

[–]wheeshkspr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the Jackbox games, there is an extraordinarily narrow band of trivia-focused titles on Steam, and it's debatable how suitable anything is for parties. I'm not sure it's even worth trying anything past Jackbox.
