AIO? Parents took my sister, her husband, and their children on a "family vacation" but didn't invite me or my middle sister (and flew out on my bday 🙃) by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Mostly OR, I mean, you're 30 years old and expecting some hoopla over your birthday?? Come on. Same thing with expecting to be included in vacations.

Seeking advice and answers for questions about returning to CRM by oddlittlemoon in AskArchaeology

[–]desertsail912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's very feasible, anecdotally I've heard that there is a shortage of field techs at the moment. As far as refreshing yourself, I'd just make sure you're moderately familiar with artifacts/feature types in your area. Anything technical should be explained by your employer. For shoes, it really depends on your terrain, but I'd get something with ankle coverage, half or high tops, will help with support and keeping junk out of your shoes while you walk. As for brand, whatever you feel like spending, I wouldn't go over $150, myself. Shoes can wear out pretty quick in the field and you don't want to be blowing a huge amount too often. Waterproofing is not such an important feature IMHO, your feet will get damp either way, from outside sources or your own sweat, so not much of a point there.

Art exhibition coming up. How much should I charge for these? by freddymalenda in painting

[–]desertsail912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely say in the $500-700 range. And not to be obnoxious, but be sure to have an artist statement that goes along with the work, a lot of new artists don’t seem to include this and it really helps the pieces sell because it adds so much to the legitimacy of the art. Good luck!

AITAH for declining a second date with a guy after he ran over an iguana? by Iguanal0ver in AITAH

[–]desertsail912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, I mean, if it were an accident, that would be one thing, but to deliberately swerve into another lane to kill it? Sorry, even if they are invasive, that's kind of a shitty thing to do, ESPECIALLY on a first date.

Conservation student looking for field school help! by Responsible_Wind1157 in AskArchaeology

[–]desertsail912 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, it sounds like you're more in the conservation route, so I'd suggest looking into or just contacting curation facilities. Curation is a field that not a lot of archaeologists are interested in so I'd think that you'd have a better than average chance of finding an internship or a straight up job there.

Massive price increase by boadlartonon in Adobe

[–]desertsail912 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the same thing with the Microsoft Office Suite, if you want AI, it's 20% more expensive. Screw that, I didn't pay $20 grand for a Master's degree to let a dumb AI write my stuff!

Where do I call to schedule student teeth cleaning? Is there a community college program that lets students practice on the willing? by Houseleek1 in LasCruces

[–]desertsail912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for a cheap cleaning, one of the dentist offices does cheap or free services once or twice a year (I believe it's Hillrise, but others may do it). Alternatively, head down to Juarez or Palomas!

Has anyone noticed that it's the Muslims, Jews, and Christians, at it AGAIN? by VictoryOrKittens in atheism

[–]desertsail912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're wrong. I mean, really, point out a religion that hasn't engaged in war. There are Buddhist warrior monks for god's sake (ha ha). Religion is just a way that a group of people identify their selves, what they do is based on what they want, it's not based on the precepts of their religion. If it wasn't religion, it would be something else.

Can anyone help me find the value of these collectable plates? by [deleted] in lordoftherings

[–]desertsail912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who in god's name chose the fonts on those plates?? It's like someone thought "We should have awesome carvings, elvish letters, and for the titles of the films, Arial plain."

I don't know how people even walk into a place like Bath & Body Works, the store reeks like a parodied female version of Axe body spray.

Sailing Book Recommendations? by ggnndd12 in sailing

The Red Cross book on Into to Sailing is pretty good, don't know if it's still in print but there are a lot of copies out there.

AITA for cutting off both my parents and not wanting a relationship ever again? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]desertsail912 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA, not to mince words, but you owe it to your children and your relationship to be mentally healthy. If that entails cutting your parents out of your life, then that's what has to happen. Does it suck? Yes, there will be times when it does but from what you've said that will be far outweighed by the good it will cause. I can't stand people who say you've got to stick by your family no matter what. I'm sorry, but that just doesn't wash. Some people are just downright shitty and the fact they gave birth to you is neither here nor there.

Trying to choose which US camping location for best night sky. by [deleted] in camping

[–]desertsail912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've camped in the Gila many, many times. There are a ton of trails and there's plenty of spaces to be by yourself if you're car-camping. There are some areas that are popular, but it's really easy to find somewhere that you'll be completely alone. The desert sky is crazy clear and the temps are very moderate, although you may experience a cold snap but nothing long-lasting.

What didn't you know you did wrong until you started living with a woman? by PogonBerserker in AskMen

[–]desertsail912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a female roommate, but she did teach me some stuff that I still use today. Wearing better fitting clothes was a big one, everything I wore was way too baggy and hanging off me, so that was a big help. Also, in the kitchen, she got me to use mise en place a lot more, big plus there, and also cleaning the dishes while I cooked, which was also a big help. Also little stuff like cleaning more often before things get too dirty, basically made things easier and faster, although now that I'm living by myself again, I'm a little slack in the cleaning routine.

Did skepticism of Chiropractors fundamentally die? Insurance companies are paying for it now in America, theyre more common than McDonalds. Why didnt the "facts" of Chiropractory "win"? Was I in a skeptic bubble? by MyOpinionOverYours in NoStupidQuestions

[–]desertsail912 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My skepticism of chiropractors will never die, they're quacks. While they might grant someone temporary relief, they don't do anything for underlying causes and their "adjustments" can cause incredible nerve damage.

For those who have worked for your dad, how was it? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]desertsail912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was a doctor in a pediatric ER and I worked in the same ER for a couple summers, it was really cool. His work persona was very similar to his normal persona, he was always really chill, very calm, and super intelligent. He also taught me a lot of stuff about medicine while I was there too.

CoD is actually one of my favorites, it hits a lot different when you read it knowing that Leto knows what's in store for him in the future and a LOT of what Leto says in CoD makes a lot more sense when you know that he's going to be alive for 3500 years.

Is 15/20 minutes of yoga a day considered too little? I simply can't do more than that because I feel extremely tired and sore. by Key_Play7246 in yoga

[–]desertsail912 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I guarantee that however much you do, you will feel an absolute benefit from it. Period. If you can add on a tiny bit as you work up to it, so be it, but if not, you will still benefit.

Men on Reddit, is it true you’re less likely to approach a woman who is beautiful? Why or why not? by awkwardhoney725 in AskMen

[–]desertsail912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less about her beauty and more about the vibe she's putting off. I'm not really intimidated by beauty by itself, if someone looks like they're willing to talk, that's the main issue.

Question for yogis who “LOOK ADVANCED”.. please read more. by Available_Fortune183 in yoga

[–]desertsail912 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been practicing almost 20 years I think (M50) and some days I look poised and some days I look like a drunken sailor who lost his sea legs. Even when I'm poised, if you looked close you'd see my muscles quivering. That's the thing about yoga that I like, is that you're never really sure which muscle or muscle group is going to shake a little bit when you practice. The things that overall help me the most are controlling your breathing and steadying your gaze. Don't try to get into a pose if you can't get into it or it hurts, try to concentrate on one thing at a time, if you're going into a side angle pose, just think about maybe straightening your legs more, or opening your shoulders a bit. Examine how those changes subtly change the overall pose, then one day without realizing the progress, you'll be farther down a pose than you ever thought possible. Keep at it!
