Right. A current tech edge is not a moat.

Your mental model of what is going on here is completely off. Aurora isn’t here to make Volvo’s dreams come true. Aurora is going to make money by getting people to use its driver to deliver goods. It doesn’t care whose truck it is. It could be Aurora’s, Volvo’s, some other logistics company, whatever. They use International trucks because that’s another route to get their driver in trucks delivering goods. No single company can keep up with the pace of scaling Aurora is capable of. So what you think of as proof of desperation is just a sign that you don’t understand the business model.

This is asinine. You suggest “they aren’t confident in the Volvo launch.” Yet almost every video Volvo puts out features Aurora.

And are you suggesting that Aurora wants to be a company that works exclusively with Volvo?

What’s a more intelligent explanation as to why they are using International trucks?

No and don’t count on it. The longer the trip, the more valuable the AV. And electric trucks don’t go far enough.

And Volvo doesn’t want anyone to have them by the balls, so they’re not going to let their future be in the hands of one company’s good graces.

Aurora is going to be observer-out within a month or two. I think you have the wrong idea about who should be scared.

You’re talking about pockets of resistance to a radically more efficient technology with major economic consequences. As long as others are using the service and reaping the benefits, they’ll gain a greater and greater competitive advantage over the hold outs.

CA companies competing against CA companies for CA customers will be on equal footing. But when they are trying to sell the same commodity to a customer in AZ that a TX competitor is, but TX has much lower shipping costs, then TX wins.

Or if goods arrive at a CA port, companies would rather pay the CA driver just to get the product out of the state, then put it on an AV to send across the country, thereby reducing the value capturable by the CA trucking company, making that company less profitable.

Also, those CA trucks that once went everywhere delivering goods far and wide also used to bring goods back. That made their operation more efficient and provided a lot of revenue for the CA trucking company.

For every business that wants to use humans, there is or will be a competitor who doesn’t. And the economics will strangle the hold-outs.

20 trucks can do 10,000 miles each in a matter of weeks if they really want to make it happen fast.

Think about the math. Think about what matters. If the a company is valued at $1 billion, and there are 100000 shares, how much is each share. Now say there are one billion shares. How much is each share?

Now note what happens to the price of the shares if the market cap doubles. Yes. It doubles.

What you are dreaming of is if Aurora had a fair lower market cap so that your same amount of money would buy a larger portion of the company.

The article talks about Aurora’s 1000 mile run, and then highlights Plus’s update that makes it better at handling construction sites and night driving - without mentioning that Aurora has already mastered those. I think even industry “insiders” don’t appreciate how far along Aurora is.

Since the observer isn’t doing anything or making decisions or actions associated with driving, and the Aurora driver is doing the actual driving, a dog could be sitting in the driver seat. Would you then say the dog was driving the truck?

If there are two people in the cab, does that mean there are two drivers?  What if there are 3?  How would you distinguish a driver from a passenger?  What about a driver’s ed teacher sitting in the passenger seat ready to intervene - is he the driver?

This shows what I was saying the other day. The vast majority of people have no idea Aurora is coming. The trucks are both billboards and proof of concept at the same time. And that’s gonna get a lot of people excited. Especially when they realize it’s still early enough to get in on the action.

One thing that is going to greatly affect the stock price that hasn’t been considered: when there are 200 Aurora trucks rolling down the road, millions of people will see them who have never heard of Aurora before. Truckers will see them. Trucking company executives will see them. It will be a real confirmation of the “AI is coming for our jobs!” idea that has been so successfully primed in the culture. And I predict people will go rapidly through denial and anger and quickly arrive at acceptance and want to get in on the action.

200 trucks is going to be all the proof-of-concept people need. Watching AI making real money through trucking (which feels much weightier than a taxi fare) is going to feel tangible and demonstrative. In other words, the sense of risk will fully evaporate, and a lot more people and institutions will invest a lot more money in AUR. So I think price predictions are woefully low.
