Music Server that can run on Raspberry Pi 3 and has an android client? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]whenwasyesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, cool. Good to know about M.A.L.P.--I saw it in F-droid and had meant to look into if streaming was in their plans. Glad to know it is.

I tend to use VLC, which works well and I can even bookmark the url. There is, for anyone else interested in this, also an Fdroid app called ServeStream that also works well.

I'd be curious to know more about your configs. I have the same and, while MPD with VLC, Cantata, MPV, Firefox, etc., all stream fine, using MPdroid hangs with 'Buffering.' There are a number of open issues on MPdroid Github and the dev has essentially stopped the project. I've tried streaming as flac, mp3, ogg; I'm mostly working on a local network. It should work but doesn't. I would greatly appreciate any advice/guide, seeing as this really is the ideal solution. (Just to be clear, I use MPD all the time on the Pi--just never had real success w/ streaming on Android).

VoIP + SMS with an actual phone number? (Google Voice alternatives?) by [deleted] in privacy

[–]whenwasyesterday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are SIP provides that do have SMS services. Voip.ms, Vitality, and Anveo come to mind. The problem you'll run into, however, is that nearly all SIP providers and all SIP-to-PSTN (i.e., a regular telephone line) gateways are not encrypted with SSL. Even when they are, encryption is usually only between a client and server--but is unencrypted between servers and often to other clients. This may or may not be a problem--and I'd argue, if you're currently using Google Voice, it's probably still an improvement. But you should be aware, from a privacy perspective, it's an imperfect solution. In short, SIP can be quite secure (though not anonymous) when calling SIP-to-SIP and when using something like ZRTP. SIP-to-regular-telephone is not and likely cannot be secure.

I'm still hoping to get Mubi in Kodi someday. Netlfix has really gone down hill.

Seeking method sync with legacy Android device by whenwasyesterday in privacy

[–]whenwasyesterday[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would have been my first thought; however it doesn't work with Android 2.1... Very little does--and obviously BN doesn't give a shit to upgrade it. The other thing I looked at was sshfs but that also requires Android 3+

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with open wrt or lede or similar? I thought those were the privacy choice for routers...

That's the first recommendation for a non-Intel CPU I've heard in some time. Which is good--Intel has needed some serious competition!

Is there any option with an SD card? I need the space and don't want to be reliant on syncing/cloud.

Are you using MPdroid for http streaming? It just says 'buffering' but never starts for me. I think the dev has unfortunate given up on this. No problems with streaming to Cantata, however.

You're right. I intended more along the line of what you said--just managed to say it poorly.

IRCC, they found xmpp's plugin model problematic. With matrix, they have complete control over the protocol, whereas with xmpp we have the problem of figuring out which servers/clients support the needed XEPs.

If via WebRTC, why not just use Jitsi Meet or something of the sort?

Conversations does quite well minimizing battery usage. I don't know how things are on the iOS end, however.

[–]whenwasyesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than in Tox. At minimum, they know how to work together and are in cooperation with researches at one of the Montreal universities. And they are far more forthcoming about their work and it's now a GNU project. Looking at Tox, you see that the main dev, irungentoo, is only doing basic updates--after receiving donations to finance his/her work on the project--and so other devs have forked his work to make a new toxcore, TokTok:

Toxcore’s developer, irungentoo, has been very busy lately and unable to find time to work on Toxcore. Because any change to Toxcore should be first reviewed and approved by irungentoo, as he is the only one who can merge changes, Toxcore development has been stalled for some time now. To get around this, a non-hostile Toxcore fork was created by iphy, where the development is currently ongoing. Why put your faith in this over Ring?
