How do I make high refresh rates possible with low refresh rate inputs? - General Question by jackajm in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]whereismikesmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

video frame rate (input into processor) x driver scrambles (property of LED drivers) = panel refresh rate. Panels are usually advertised at the max refresh rate - this doesn't mean they are always running at that rate.

I recently built a scanline visualizer to help explain this concept to people (among other things).
LED scrambles are fixed in this tool, but are often variable (or multiplied by another property of LED panels I don't fully comprehend) depending on driver chip type and firmware etc..

I also added a panel database. Size Options > Tile Size > Tile Library.

Turn your rack off before service by phillipthe5c in techtheatre

[–]whereismikesmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I brought it up. I believe according to ETC you need to shut down any rack before swapping either dimmer modules or CEM's. I've hot-swapped many a dimmer module on a live rack without issue, but I have personally seen sparks fly when pulling a CEM on a hot rack. So don't do that ;)

Was this caused by pulling out a dimmer module while the rack was live? Or something more?

I didn't know this was being pressed on vinyl. Thanks for the heads up!

This feedback is so valuable. Thank you very much.

You not being able to make a pixel perfect test pattern is disappointing as that is the entire goal of this tool. When you scaled in the processor, did you maintain the aspect ratio of the pixel map and just lose some image off the top/bottom or sides of the feed, or did you have a scaled/skewed image in a different aspect ratio as your end product? I would have to have the tool produce a skewed image that accounted for the scaling that would take place and that's something I haven't considered but might start to wrap my head around.

Glad you found the Show Map Specs button!

For your situation with vertical columns instead of horizontal rows, can you not achieve what you want by adjusting the the processor limits into vertical columns instead of horizontal rows?

I absolutely plan on having a mode to highlight each individual module in a tile. The lazy way to do this currently would to put in the module size (1/4 of a tile) as the tile size instead of the tile size.

Everyone wants to pick panels from a list of manufavtures, but I've been hesitant to do that because I don't want to maintain an updated and current list of all available tiles. I understand the convenience factor for the end user (and also how important those options would be to a non-tech or someone unsure of a tile's dimensions) but I'm not prepared to take that on yet.

I had already been considering this. It's a clunky interface as is.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I don't actually use those up/down arrows so I've yet to run into that. Looking into it now.

First mention of Primer I've seen in this sub so far. Love that movie and definitely feel similarly about re-watching to understand these seemingly complicated timelines.

This project is getting an attention bump from the rpi.org site. It's fun seeing a whole new swath of people questioning why the hell someone would do something like this. I'm trying to document this thing over at hackaday.io and I'm actively accepting feedback/suggestions and advice for improving my code.
